Fundraising Coupon Booklets

The Vestry is supporting a new easy and fun product to sell as a fundraising campaign for St. John’s. We are selling fundraising coupon books for $20.00 from a company called Simple Qpons. The books allow individuals to save money with things like buy-one-get-one-free and 50% off discounts at tons of our favorite local merchants. There are two editions of the book: one for Northwest Indiana and one for Southland Chicago. You can contact Vestry members or the church office to either purchase books yourself  OR to help in selling books for this fundraiser.

Painting with Friends

You don’t have to be able to draw a straight line because we won’t ask you to. Mark your calendars to join St. John’s Paint Party from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 27 in the Undercroft. Shirley Reilly and Bill Moser will guide you through the steps to create your own painting. The class size is limited, and reservation deadline is Jan. 20. The cost is $40, and all materials will be supplied. Call Gale Michael, Shirley Reilly, or Bill Moser.

Adult Server Training

There will be a training/refresher for Greeters and Ushers on Saturday, February 2^nd  from 9:00-11:00 am. This is a combined training as both ministries work together at the beginning of the service. Please plan on attending and notify Pat Smith-Huntoon if you are unable to attend and need to set up an alternative time. Additionally, there will be training for Lectors immediately following at 11:00 am. Contact Bill Moser for more information.

18^th Annual Episcopal Men’s Pre-Lenten Retreat – Letting Faith Find You

The Annual Retreat will take place from Friday, February 8^th – Saturday, February 9^th at the Dekoven Center (600 21^st Street, Racine, Wisconsin). The Rev. Christopher Powell has agreed to serve as the Retreat Leader, where attendees will have opportunities to participate in small- and large-group discussions on important issues, as well as share fellowship with other men in worship. Flyers with additional information and registration forms will be available in the undercroft. Do not wait to register! Available spots are on a “first come, first registered” basis, and the registration post mark date will be used to determine if room is available.

TV Needed

The new Resource Room needs a 55-to-65-inch flat-screen television that can be mounted on the wall. It should have the capacity to connect to a laptop in order to run videos and Power Point presentations. Do you have such a TV in good condition that you can donate, or are you interested in donating a new one? If so, please contact Fr. Jeremy.

CELEBRATE! - ST. JOHN'S ANNUAL PATRONAL DINNER - SAT., JAN. 12 - 4:30 PM (Potluck!)

The Vestry of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist is pleased to invite all parishioners to gather joyfully for our annual Patronal Dinner celebrating the Feast Day of St. John (Dec. 27). This year's theme is the Patchwork Quilt, symbolizing the many diverse backgrounds and stories that we all bring to the table of our loving parish. With that in mind, parishioners are encouraged to bring their favorite quilts as decorations for the event, and/or to contribute less precious items to be used as tablecloths, too. As we all know, our new pastor Fr. Jeremy, himself, is the latest addition to our parish quilt, so this event will celebrate his new ministry, as well... 

REGARDING THE FOOD AND DRINK, since this is a true Pot Luck event, the Vestry will not be providing any main course, but will be like every other parishioner that will bring a dish or beverage. Please see the sign-up sheet this Sunday at St. John's to RSVP. For more information, or to sign up as a volunteer, please contact Vestry members Cyndie Knoll, Rob McManamy, or Jean Scott. FMSC: Thank you, people of St. John’s!

The very generous donations from our parish (just shy of $550) paid for 2,196 meals—enough to feed 6 children for a full year.  Twelve of your fellow parishioners went on to pack 5,508 meals in just two short hours at the Aurora facility of  Feed My Starving Children this past Saturday…that’s enough food to feed 17 children for a full year.  We were part of a group of roughly 200 volunteers who together packed 41,472 meals for malnourished and starving children.  That massive number feeds 114 children for a full year. Please seek out these people and ask them about their experience and consider joining us the next time we go to FMSC:  Laurie & Jack Zielinski, Margi Strombeck, Lita Morgan, Ann Moser, Ted Stone, Eric Turnquest, Mike & Catherine Madden, Elliot McManamy and Rob & Dee McManamy.  You’ll hear just how fun it was and how the Holy Spirit was with everyone there, helping us move a mountain of food.  [To learn more about this highly rated and respected organization, please go to www.fmsc.org]

South Holland Master Chorale’s Annual Christmas Concert

The popular Christmas concert will include songs and carols, new and old, sung by the Chorale with help from the organ, instruments, children’s choire, and the audience. The Southlake Children’s Choir will join the Chorale in this concert. This marks the 18^th time the Chorale has presented its Christmas concert at St. Victor. The date for the concert is Sunday, December 9^th at 3:00 pm at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Parish (500 Northgate Dr., Dyer, Indiana). All Chorale Concerts are free, but free-will donations are gratefully accepted.

Please check your email frequently leading up to our Dec 8th trip to the Aurora facility.  You will receive emails directly from Feed My Starving Children regarding specific details of our volunteer work.  Pay close attention to what they suggest you wear and what they ask you to leave at home.  Also watch for emails from me about our departure time and transport from St. John's. Thanks so much to all of you who have volunteered for this worthwhile project (which should also be a very fun time).  Please contact Dee McManamy with any questions or updates.

The 19^th Annual Cookie Walk will take place on Saturday, December 8^th from 9:00 –11:30 am. All proceeds are a benefit of the OUTREACH commitment and St. John’s. Historically, we have netted over $3,800.00 yearly. We need everyone to make a DOUBLE or TRIPLE batch of cookies, candy, jam, or jelly. The emphasis is on homemade. Dog treats will be available. All items should be brought (in non-returnable containers) to the undercroft on Friday, December 7^th before 7:00 pm. Helpers of all ages are needed Friday, December 7^th  from 10:00-1:00 and 1:00-4:00 and Saturday, December 8^th from 8:30-10:00am, 10:00-11:30am, and 11:30am-1:00 pm. Any questions? This year’s deadline for dropping off your Christmas Baskets at St. John’s will be no later than Wednesday, December 5^th. If you are unable to shop and would like to be a part of this blessing, please give checks made out to St. John's, with "Revive Christmas Baskets" in the memo.  The youth of the congregation will be adopting/shopping and wrapping the presents for the family. Checks should get to the church by Friday, November 30^th.

Announcements for September 23rd

Father Jeremy’s Arrival

In anticipation of Father Jeremy’s arrival, it would be a good idea for everyone to reacquaint themselves with their nametags. If you haven’t been wearing yours regularly, please make sure you find it and put on each Sunday so that Father Jeremy can start getting to know everyone’s names. Additionally, if anyone needs a replacement nametag or cannot find theirs, simply drop off the old one in the box outside the parish office (or a note if yours is missing). It will be replaced for you.

2018 ANNUAL DIOCESAN CONVENTION

The 181st Annual Convention of the Diocese of Chicago will be held Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard. New this year: Registration fees include Friday Fun & Fellowship (dessert and dancing from 7-9:30 pm) and a Saturday networking lunch in the Junior Ballroom. Note: there will NOT be a dinner reception on Friday night. Please have dinner on your own and join us from 7-9:30 for dessert and dancing.

Michael Soto will be performing a recital at Madonna della Strada Chapel on Loyola University campus on Sunday, September 16 at 3:00 pm. The program features works of blind organists from the 15^th to the 20^th century, including Louis Vierne, George Shearing, and the final choral preludes of J.S. Bach. Admission is free, and free parking is available in the garage on campus. Loyola is located at 1032 W Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL.

 St. John’s Ministry Fair

The annual Ministry Fair will take place this Sunday, September 9^th, following the 10 a.m. service. This is your opportunity to learn about and/or sign up for all the different organizations and service ministries available at the church. Please make sure you attend and let your interests be known.

Mum Sale

Youth Group

Our youth 8^th-12^th grade are getting together 1-2 times per month to plan and participate in service projects and a bit of fun.  They met on 8/19/18 and came up with some great ideas.  Look forward to seeing them in action throughout the year!

RUMMAGE SALE

The pre-sale for the parish is Friday, tomorrow, for 6 - 8 p.m.

The public sale starts Saturday at 8 a.m. Everything goes half price at noon. We need helpers to pack stuff up and carry tables down to the Undercroft after the sale from 2 - 3:30 ish. 

Thanks to all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this a success!

The SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT) will be hosting its annual summer picnic from 1pm to 5 pm, July 29 on the church grounds of Peace Memorial United Church of Christ (10300 W 131^st St, Palos Park). There is no charge, but bring a side dish if you can. There will be lots of food, a clown, a bouncy house, a piñata, games for the kids, and lots of great conversation with our Jewish, Muslim, and Christian neighbors. If you are interested in attending, please speak to Rob McManamy or Bryan Burke.

Huge Rummage Sale Needs Volunteers

We need volunteers:

·         Sorters next Monday - Friday mornings (July 16  - 20) from 10 to noon,

·         Cashiers and Room Helpers for the Pre-sale for parishioners from 6 - 8 pm Friday July 20.

·         Cashiers and Room Helpers in 2-hour shifts from 7:45 - 3 ish on the day of the sale Saturday, July 21.

Finally, we need bags, both paper grocery and plastic bags.

Donation letters will be available for tax purposes.

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social

A big thank you to all who helped in any way to make the Ice Cream Social a success, even with the weather not cooperating. Whether you helped set-up, contributed flowers, loaned card tables, scooped ice cream, cut watermelon, put up tents, moved tables and chairs, greeted guests, served ice cream and cold drinks, prayed, or helped take everything down, cleaned up and stored away, or made a financial contribution, it could not have happened without you. THANK YOU!

Please donate clean, wearable adult and kids’ clothes, toys, furniture, tools, books, dishes, antiques, knickknacks, outdoor/camping gear, etc. The proceeds from the sale will go to the Rectory Project, and we hope to make the sale an Outreach to the greater community. A prominent North Shore Episcopal church makes over a million dollars each year on their rummage sale, so we have a high standard to meet. We’ll have volunteer sign-up sheets on Sunday, July 8, after everyone has a chance to rest from the Ice Cream Social.

Care for Our Common Home: Interfaith Forest Clean-Up in Oak Forest

The SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT) will be doing a litter cleanup project at the Yankee Woods forest preserve in Oak Forest (just north of Central Avenue and 167^th Street) on Sunday, July 8. The clean-up will be from 2:00pm to 4:00pm with ice cream afterwards. Gloves, sticks, bags, and water will be provided. This is a great opportunity if you need community service hours for school as well as a great opportunity to work and talk with people of different faiths. Contact Bryan Burke by July 4 to sign-up.

St. John’s Old Time Community Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Wednesday, July 4th. The parade begins at 10 a.m., and we will begin serving around 10:15 a.m. Twistina and Strawberri will be twisting balloons into all sorts of fun shapes. Come enjoy ice cream and cool drinks. Hot dogs and cookies are available for purchase. (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)

The SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT) will be doing a litter cleanup project at the Yankee Woods forest preserve in Oak Forest (just north of Central Avenue and 167^th Street) on Sunday, July 8. The clean-up will be from 2:00pm to 4:00pm with ice cream afterwards. Gloves, sticks, bags, and water will be provided. This is a great opportunity if you need community service hours for school as well as a great opportunity to work and talk with people of different faiths. Contact Bryan Burke by July 4 to sign-up.

Financial contributions are needed to help cover the cost of the children’s entertainment. And many volunteers are needed to run the event. Contact Gale Michael to volunteer. Look for the red, white and blue donation envelopes around the church.

RUMMAGE SALE

We’re planning an all-parish rummage sale for Saturday, July 21. We’ll begin collecting clean, useful items of all sorts July 8. The proceeds will be used for the Rectory update, and we hope to use the sale as an outreach to all members of the community. Everything will be priced to sell, and the leftovers will go to Restoration Ministries in Harvey. If you have questions, please contact Bill Moser. We hope the entire parish will support this effort. Thanks!

SWIFT INTERFAITH PICNIC JULY 29TH

The SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT) will be hosting its annual summer picnic from 1pm to 5 pm, July 29 on the church grounds of Peace Memorial United Church of Christ (10300 W 131^st St, Palos Park). There is no charge, but bring a side dish if you can. There will be lots of food, a clown, a bouncy house, a piñata, games for the kids, and lots of great conversation with our Jewish, Muslim, and Christian neighbors. If you are interested in attending, please speak to Rob McManamy or Bryan Burke by July 17^th so we can get a rough headcount.

St. John’s Ice Cream Social is a wonderful part of the Fourth of July tradition in Flossmoor. It is our gift to the community. Many volunteers are needed for preparation at 9 a.m. on July 3rd, for set-up at 9 a.m. on July 4th and for clean-up around noon afterwards. Can you contribute time to help set-up, host or clean-up for the event? Contact Gale Michael to volunteer.  Contributions from parishioners help us continue to offer children’s entertainment at the event and to keep food costs low. Parish Picnic

This year, our annual Picnic & Garden Planting, which will include a celebration of our Confirmands, will take place after the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, June 3^rd. Everyone is invited for food and refreshments, socialization, and to take part in planting the parish garden. Everything grown in the garden will be donated to Rich Township’s Food Pantry.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

We’re gearing up for the St. John’s Annual Community Ice Cream Social scheduled for Wednesday, July 4th. Twistina and Strawberri will entertain us by twisting balloons into amazing animals, hats, and other shapes. We’ll have ice cream, cold drinks, hot dogs and cookies. All this happens immediately following the 10 a.m. Flossmoor Children’s Parade and runs through about noon. Your participation is what makes this event a success. Are you able to bring in some wildflowers or flowers from your garden? Can you put up flyers around town? Can you help move tables and tents outside? Can you meet and greet our guests? Can you scoop ice cream or cut watermelon on July 3rd? Do you have a card table or two that we can borrow? How about (and this is for everyone) praying for glorious weather? Rectory Update – Donna Blackburn
Good news!  Construction in the rectory is starting May 9. We are so excited to get the ball rolling....and speaking of rolling balls, thanks to all who supported the bowling fundraiser!  We plan on having another open house when the work is done, so stay tuned. 

Flower Pickup

Pickup day for those who placed orders for the St. John flower sale is Saturday, May 12^th from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. There will also be a limited number of plants available for those who did not place an order but would still like to purchase some.

  

Pentecost is Coming on May 20th

Think red! Red in what you wear and what you share. Next Sunday, May 20th, is the Day of Pentecost when we joyfully remember the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Don't forget to wear red, the Pentecost color. To add to the festivities, we'll have a red snack day at coffee hour. Please bring in some red finger food to share. Be as creative as you like, and let's celebrate!

Bowling Benefit

St. John’s is sponsoring a bowling benefit fundraiser on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Lynwood Bowl, 2581 Glenwood-Lansing Road, Lynwood, Illinois. Check-in is at 4:00 pm and bowling starts at 4:30 pm. The fee is $25.00 per person, which includes bowling, shoes and food. There will be raffles, and a non-perishable donation for the Rich Township Food Pantry will be appreciated. Reservations required. Money due by April 29, 2018. Get your teams together.
