       “Faith + Science” // Interfaith Forum // Sept 17, 3 pm, Frankfort

Next month, Episcopal Rev. Clayton Thomason, director of the medical ethics program at Rush University Medical Center, will offer a Christian perspective at the SWIFT Interfaith Forum on "Faith + Science." Muslim and Jewish speakers will also join him on a panel to present their distinct takes on this oft-contentious topic. The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 3-6 pm, at the St. Francis Woods Campus in Frankfort IL (9201 W St Francis Rd). Refreshments will be served, but attendees also are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation for Respond Now. CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!  URGENT HELP NEEDED!

We need volunteers for teaching Sunday School!  This is an important ministry that has a positive and lasting impact upon the children of our parish.  Volunteers do not need to be parents of current students, and can alternate Sundays to meet personal schedules.  If you are interested or want to know more about the program, please call Diane Walsh-Madden.

We Need Your Feedback!  

The Search Committee is asking that everyone complete the Church Assessment Tool, or CAT.  This survey is designed to tell us who we are as a parish and who we want to be going forward as we search for our new rector.  If you are 16 and over and consider St. John's your church home, please go online and take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StJohnEvangelistIL.

Jubilation – Sunday, September 10

Daughters of the King will be meeting on Saturday, September 9^th from 9:30-11:00 am. We will be discussing our plans for this year as well as preparing the display for the Jubilee. Also, Confirmation Registration is this weekend. All young people 7th through 12th grade are welcome to enroll. Classes will begin September 17^th.

Where were you when everyone had “Saturday Night Fever?” Were you sporting your brand new leisure suit? Sporting plaid pants, or bell bottoms? Were you still being dressed by your parents, growing up in an avocado and gold kitchen? Were you watching Star Wars for the 11th time? Or did you connect with the decade years later while dressing up for Halloween? Please bring a copy of your best 70's look to the Feast on Jan 14. Just put your name on the back of your picture(s) and we will try to guess who's who. Don't forget to RSVP for the feast. Please bring your reply card to church on Sunday or there are extras on the information tables. We need your reply by Wednesday Jan 11, but responses before Friday Jan 7 are especially appreciated.

Help Needed for PADS
We will be serving dinner at PADS on Wednesday, Jan 11th at St. Lawrence O’Toole at 7 PM. I need volunteers to help prepare and serve the meal beginning at 6 PM. Please see me at church or contact me by phone or email if you are able to help. Thank you. –Margi Strombeck

Practicing Our Faith Book Club
The Practicing Our Faith Book Cub is reading Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hahn this month. Read the book, and then join us on Thursday, January 19 at 7pm in the Guild roon for the discussion. New members are always welcome.

Annual Parish Meeting
The annual parish meeting will be held Sunday, January 22. Loaves and Fishes will serve brunch following the 10:00 AM service. The meeting will begin around 11:30 AM. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Donations of hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children are welcome. Coats and jackets are particularly needed, as well as socks. Donated items, if not new, should be clean and only gently used. Collection bins are located in the undercroft and at the office entrance. There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft as well. Deposit items in any of the containers. The next collection date is January 31st.

No Longer Collecting Plastic Grocery Bags
A big thank you to everyone who brought in plastic grocery bags! We are not looking for additional donations at this time, but those that have been collected will be sorted by the youth group and used to produce mats for individuals who are homeless.

The MLK Legacy Continues: Lest We Forget
A community commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be held Monday, January 18, beginning at 7 PM at the Prairie State College Conference Center. John Fountain will be the guest speaker. Homewood-Flossmoor High School Inspirational Voices and Trinity Christian College Gospel Choir will also perform. Free for students; $5.00 for adults.

Adult Sunday School Class on the Prophets
The Sunday morning adult Sunday School class is beginning a new series on the prophets and their relevance in contemporary society. It features a DVD and other material from Walter Brueggemann. The class meets during the 9:00 hour in the education wing.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree (through January 18) 
Only real trees, of course. Volunteers will be available to help Saturday, January 2, from 9 AM until Noon at the Irons Oaks parking lot on Vollmer (just west of Western). Or you may drop off your tree on your own any time before January 18. Folks physically unable to recycle their own trees may call for pick up. More information HERE.

Memorial Service for Bishop Wiedrich
A memorial service for former Suffragan Bishop William Wiedrich, who died November 26, will be held at St. James Cathedral on Saturday, February 14 at 11 AM. The Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold will preach and preside.

High School Youth and Their Parents
Please attend a very quick informational meeting regarding the Episcopal high school youth retreat--Happening #99--immediately following this Sunday's 10 AM service. Check out the diocese's website HERE for more info about the retreat (March 6th - 8th).

New Adult Sunday School Class
The adult Sunday morning class begins a new study this Sunday: Lost Christianities: Christian Scriptures and the Battles over Authentication. Why did some Scriptures “make the cut” and others didn’t? How did “orthodox” Christianity become established? The classes begin with a 30 minute DVD lecture by Prof. Bart Ehrman, followed by discussion. Join us!

Wednesday Evening Class for Lent
This year, the Wednesday evening Lenten class will study The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’s Final Days in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg & John Dominic Crossan. The class will include presentations on the material in the book as well as discussion. If you wish to read the material before class, please acquire your own copy of the book.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Yes, Lent is almost here. The traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake supper is Tuesday, February 17, beginning at 5:00 PM. It’s time to clear the larder of “delicacies” like eggs, milk and bacon before the Lenten fast begins.

Michael Soto Organ Recital
Michael Soto will be presenting a recital of musical hommages written by French composers of the 19th and 20th centuries played alongside works of the composers who inspired them. The program includes selections by Frank, Frescobaldi, Dupré, and Duruflé. The event will be at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 2330 West Sunnyside, Chicago on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7:30 pm.

• Annual Reports
  Copies of the printed parish annual reports are available on the information tables around the church and in the parish office.
  
  
• Mass en Masse
  Youth worship will not meet this Sunday, January 29. Throughout this spring the young people are scheduled to join in the parish’s corporate worship at 10:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of the month. This Sunday, the youth will help lead the Prayers of the People.
  
  
• Yarn Ministry
  The yarn ministry will meet Monday, February 6 at 7 PM in the Guild Room at the church. If you are unable to attend the gatherings, we also welcome items you create at home. Our handy work is donated to a number of charities. All levels of experience are welcome. If you would like to learn to knit, Sue O’Brien is willing to instruct. Yarn Ministry is not limited to just knitters, crocheters are also welcome. Hope to see you there.
