Wear Red for Pentecost
This Sunday is the Day of Pentecost. It is an informal custom in the church for everyone to wear red symbolizing the tongues, as of fire, in the Pentecost story.
Parish Office Summer Hours
The parish office is now on summer hours. The office will be open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
New E-vangelist Schedule
Beginning next week, the e-vangelist will be distributed electronically midday on Thursday. ALL submissions must be received in the parish office by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Please email or phone the office with submissions.
Wednesday Bible Study Class
St. John's Wednesday bible study class is on hiatus for the summer, but we will be joining Holy Family's rector and parishioners for a study of Isaiah on the next few Tuesdays from 6:30 PM until approximately 8:00 PM at Holy Family in Park Forest. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Ice Cream Social
We’re gearing up for the St. John’s Annual Community Ice Cream Social scheduled for Monday, July 4th. Skiddles and Twistina will entertain us with their balloon creations. We will have ice cream, cold drinks, and hot dogs. All of this happens immediately following the 10 a.m. Flossmoor Children’s Parade and runs through about 12:15 p.m. Your participation is what makes this event a success. Are you able to bring in some wildflowers or flowers from your garden? Can you put up flyers around town? Can you help move tables and tents outside? Can you meet and greet our guests? Can you scoop ice cream or cut watermelon on July 3rd? Do you have a card table or two that we can borrow? How about (and this is for everyone) praying for glorious weather? Announcements for April 2
Palm Sunday Next Week – April 9
The liturgy of the palms begins before each service next week. We will gather at the outdoor altar at 7:55 AM before the early service and at 9:40 AM before the later service. Come be a part of the triumphal procession!
Sign Up for the Watch
A sign up sheet is available in the back of the church for the watch in the garden beginning the evening of Maundy Thursday, April 13, and continuing through noon on Good Friday.

The schedule for Holy Week worship services was included with the Easter letter. Copies are also available at the church on the information tables.

This year the Lenten study series is titled “Cloud of Witnesses.” It will explore some of the lesser- known saints that are remembered in the Episcopal Church. Classes begin at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings in the church. For the final class this week participants are invited to share information about their favorite saint.
Contribute to Easter Flowers
Please consider making a contribution towards the lilies and other flowers that will adorn the church at Easter time. Contributions may be made in memory or thanksgiving or simply to the Glory of God. Flower contribution envelopes were included with this week’s Easter letter; they are also available in the pews.

This Sunday, September 18, children of all ages are invited to help paint a new window mural in the atrium. Meet in the atrium (near the lift) during the 9:00 AM Sunday School hour. Regular Sunday School classes begin next week.

Michael will be performing with the Southwest Symphony in an upcoming concert. He’ll be playing Handel’s Concerto for Organ HWV 295, “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale,” and Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 for organ and orchestra. The concert is on Sunday, September 25 at 4:00 in Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W College Drive, Palos Heights. Information and tickets are available at www.southwestsymphony.com.

Volunteers and Donations Needed for Best Buddies Pet Pantry
Here's an opportunity for a sit-down job with no heavy lifting and delightful co-workers! On Saturday, April 23rd, the Best Buddies coordinator will be dropping off dog treats that have been collected from donation locations throughout the southern suburbs. Our job is to repackage them in individual plastic bags for distribution to south suburban food pantries. We'll meet in the education wing at 10 AM. Let Susan Marquis know if you can help, or if you find yourself on April 23rd with an hour or two to spare, just show up. The donations that we have collected in the food pantry corner near the staircases will be picked up at that time, too. There's room in the collection box for more pet food and supplies!
New Adult Education Opportunity on Sunday Mornings
The adult Sunday School class begins a new course this Sunday, April 17. Using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum the class will study the Scripture readings appointed for that day.
Blue Jeans Sunday – May 1
May 1 is our spring landscape workday. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually, bring a rake or some clippers (or we’ll have some to borrow) and stay after church for a bit to help prepare the church grounds for spring.

St. Augustine College will honor The Rt. Rev. James W. Montgomery at its annual El Puente Awards Gala April 28. More information about this event is posted in the undercroft.

The Liturgy (Blessing) of the Palms precedes each service. Weather permitting, we will gather at the outdoor altar for the blessing of the palms, then process to the church. The Liturgy (Blessing) of the Palms precedes each service. Weather permitting, we will gather at the outdoor altar for the blessing of the palms, then process to the church. As announced at the annual meeting Tracie Moxley is leaving the position of Office Manager to work with her husband Mark in his business, Lake Street Supply. She formerly worked as the Preservation Manager for the American Theological Library Association, based in downtown Chicago. She feels God has led her here, and is excited to begin using her skills and strengths for the benefit of the parish.

The MLK Legacy Continues: Lest We Forget
A community commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be held Monday, January 18, beginning at 7 PM at the Prairie State College Conference Center. John Fountain will be the guest speaker. Homewood-Flossmoor High School Inspirational Voices and Trinity Christian College Gospel Choir will also perform. Free for students; $5.00 for adults.
Adult Sunday School Class on the Prophets
The Sunday morning adult Sunday School class is beginning a new series on the prophets and their relevance in contemporary society. It features a DVD and other material from Walter Brueggemann. The class meets during the 9:00 hour in the education wing.
Recycle Your Christmas Tree (through January 18)
Only real trees, of course. Volunteers will be available to help Saturday, January 2, from 9 AM until Noon at the Irons Oaks parking lot on Vollmer (just west of Western). Or you may drop off your tree on your own any time before January 18. Folks physically unable to recycle their own trees may call for pick up. More information HERE.

We are still collecting winter clothing articles for the PADS Ministry. Please keep this in mind as you are cleaning out your closets. Donations of hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children are welcome. Coats and jackets are particularly needed, as well as socks. Donated items, if not new, should be clean and only gently used. Collection bins are located in the undercroft and at the office entrance. There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft as well. Deposit items in any of the containers. The next collection date is January 31st.

What will some elderly people do when they don’t have enough to eat for themselves and for their only companions, who often are their pets? They share, of course, but then no one gets enough. Next to the food pantry collection baskets there is a collection box for the Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Please donate pet food and treats to help food pantry clients and their best buddies get the food they need.

Advent is a wonderful season to celebrate at home. Materials will be available during the 9:00 hour next Sunday, November 29, for you to make your own Advent wreath. Sunday School classes will not meet.

Blessing of the Animals: This Sunday, October 4
This year we again join with the people of Faith Lutheran Church to offer the blessing of the pets. Pets of any size or species are invited to receive individual blessings within the context of a brief service of prayer and praise. Sunday, October 4, 4:30 PM at the Outdoor Altar. The “traditional” contests will also be offered.
New Parking Regulations in Flossmoor
New parking regulations went into effect October 1 in Flossmoor. There is no change to parking regulations on Leavitt, Central and Park. (Parking is still permitted on both sides of Leavitt; regulations on Central and Park remain as they currently are.) If, however, you park on Bruce or Burns, note that parking is now allowed only on the non-hydrant side of the street (the west side). More information and a map are available HERE.

The knitting group will meet Monday, October 5, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room.
Adult Sunday School
The Living Faithfully adult Sunday School class continues a course on “Lost Christianities,” a look at the diversity within the early Christian movement and the evolution of what is now known as orthodox Christianity. All are welcome; you may join the class at any time. Sundays at 9:00 AM in Classroom 4 in the education wing.
Sing Handel’s Messiah
The Illiana Oratorio Society will begin rehearsals for Handel's Messiah on Monday, October 19, from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM. These rehearsals will be held at First Christian Reformed Church, 16248 South Park Ave, South Holland, IL. There will be seven rehearsals and the concert will be presented on Sunday, December 6 at 2 PM. All are welcome to join! Questions? Check with Gale Michael.

The vestry meets Monday, March 16, beginning at 7:00 PM in the church.

Once again blues musician Smiley Tillmon will be providing entertainment. The menu includes fresh fried whitefish, roasted potatoes, cole slaw and dessert (or mac and cheese for those who prefer). Dinner will be served from 5:30 – 7:30 PM; tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under, paid at the door. Proceeds benefit South Suburban PADS. Please contact the parish office by March 17 to make reservations.

On March 22, during the Christian formation time, the children and youth of the church will be recreating the Last Supper. In order for the Last Supper to be successful, it is important that all who with to participate arrive by 9:00 AM.

Which Friday works best for you (and your family’s calendar): May 1, May 8 or May 29? We’re lining up a great roster of guests and activities for the lock-in. You really won’t want to miss it!

It will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 8, at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest. Pianist is our own amazing Michael Soto. See Bob or Betsy Burgwald for tickets.

Attention High School Youth: Let's shop for our furry friends (because winter has been rrrrufff)! Meet at St. John's promptly at 4pm this Sunday, March 1. We'll take our proceeds from the Pancake Supper and shop for necessities for our animal friends at South Suburban Humane Society. Please call or text Dee so we know how much car space is needed. We will return to St. John's by 5:30pm.
