Announcements for January 1

RSVP for the Feast
Where were you when everyone had “Saturday Night Fever?” Were you sporting your brand new leisure suit? Sporting plaid pants, or bell bottoms? Were you still being dressed by your parents, growing up in an avocado and gold kitchen? Were you watching Star Wars for the 11th time? Or did you connect with the decade years later while dressing up for Halloween? Please bring a copy of your best 70's look to the Feast on Jan 14. Just put your name on the back of your picture(s) and we will try to guess who's who.

Don't forget to RSVP for the feast. Please bring your reply card to church on Sunday. We need your reply by Wednesday Jan 11, but responses before Friday Jan 7 are especially appreciated.

Lessons and Carols This Sunday
Services of Scripture readings interspersed with music of prayer and praise are a rich part of our Anglican worship tradition. This Sunday’s 10:00 a.m. service will be a service of Christmas Lessons and Carols. Holy Communion, although not a traditional part of these services, will be included on Sunday.

Wednesday Service
The Wednesday morning celebration of the Holy Eucharist WILL resume this week, January 4.

Parish Office Holiday Closure
The parish office is closed through January 3. Voice mail, email and snail mail are being checked regularly.

Sunday School Vacation
Sunday School classes will NOT meet this Sunday, January 1.

Christmas Thanks
Thank you to everyone who, in small ways and large, contributed to Christmas services at St. John’s. Special thanks to Michael Soto and the choir and to the Altar Guild for all of their extra work. And thanks be to God for the young people who read the “Voices of Christmas” at the early Christmas Eve service.

Vestry Budget Meeting
The vestry meets next Sunday, January 8, following the 10:00 AM service to finalize the 2017 budget.

Reflection for January 1

O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen (Collect for the Incarnation, BCP, p. 252).

Parish Stewardship

Minutes
Anne Edwards moved to accept the minutes from the October vestry meeting, and Nichole Dailor seconded. Following a vote, the motion was approved.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that contributions still are behind expectations, but they are picking up. Expenses are below expectations for this point in the year, mostly resulting from a prior employment vacancy, lower gas bills, and timing of billing. The approximate $2,000 deficit may be wiped out by these favorabilities.
Debbi presented an update on pledging for 2017. Fifty-four pledges have been made so far for a total of about $154,000. There are another 17 pledges from 2016 that have not yet been made for 2017. In response to a question, Debbi stated that there is no apparent correlation between church attendance and giving.
Bob Burgwald moved to accept the October Treasurer’s Report, and Hans Zigmund seconded. The motion was approved.

Reflection for December 18

Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne (Charles Wesley, The Hymnal 1982, #66).

David Vryhof, Society of Saint John the Evangelist).

Reflection for December 4

Alain de Botton, a British-based philosopher and author of The News: A User’s Manual, believes that in contemporary culture news has largely replace religion as “our central source of guidance and our touchstone of authority.” The news—not scripture, tradition, or inspired ritual—informs how we handle suffering and make moral choices (Peter W. Marty, “Consumed by the news,” Christian Century, November 23, 2016).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - October 17, 2016

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry met in the church at 7:00 PM for Evening Prayer and then reconvened in the undercroft meeting room where everyone offered prayers of intercession and thanksgiving.

Attendance
Present were the rector Kristin Orr; the senior warden Anne Edwards; the junior warden Steve Hofer; vestry members Bob Burgwald, Rob Carrier, Alice Creason, Nichole Dailor, Randy Oyster, Ted Stone; the treasurer Debbi Huggett; and the clerk Susan Marquis. Absent were vestry members Zoltan Sziky, Cynthia Turnquest, and Hans Zigmund.

Parish Stewardship

Minutes
Nichole Dailor moved to accept the minutes from the August vestry meeting, and Rob Carrier seconded. Following a vote, the motion was approved.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that we still are running behind on revenue, but she checked past treasurer’s reports and found that we were at about the same revenue level during the last four Septembers. The expenses show a slight favorability due to the office manager vacancy for six weeks, invoices that are not yet in, and somewhat lower gas costs. Bob Burgwald moved to accept the September treasurer’s report, and Nichole Dailor seconded. The motion was approved.

Rector’s Discretionary Account
Copies of the rector’s discretionary account report for the third quarter of 2016 were distributed to the vestry prior to the meeting. Steve Hofer made a motion recognizing that the vestry received this report. Anne Edwards seconded, and the motion passed.

Information

Rector’s Report
—Pastor Orr reported that she recently attended a diocesan clergy conference.
—The rector still has one week of vacation left for this year, which she would like to take but has no firm plans yet about when that might happen.
—As the convener of the local ministerial association, Pastor Orr is in charge of arranging the annual community Thanksgiving service, which typically draws 500-600 people on the evening before Thanksgiving. This year it will take place at St. Joseph’s in Homewood starting at 7:30 PM. Rabbi Carmit Harari will preach.
—Sunday School classes are underway. Roughly once per month there will be an intergenerational class that will present tools for home worship practices.
—The neighbors to the east of the rectory are replacing their garage, and it will open into the alley rather than the driveway on Park Drive. This may result in pressure on the village to snow plow the alley.

Reports from Wardens and Other Parish Organizations
There were no reports.

Upcoming Events
November 2nd at 7:00 PM - All Souls’ Day service
November 6th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM - rectory open house
November 13th at coffee hour - Loaves and Fishes (pot luck)
November 18th and 19th - diocesan convention
November 20th after the 10:00 AM service - Blue Jeans Sunday (fall garden work on parish grounds)

Discussion and Decisions

Columbarium Project
Pastor Orr has been having trouble finding a stone mason. It is unlikely that we can finish this project until next spring.

Stewardship
—The vestry established a stewardship speaking schedule for the announcement section of Sunday services. On October 23rd, Rob Carrier will speak at 8:00 and one of the Turnquests at 10:00. On October 30th, Steve Hofer and Bob Burgwald are scheduled for 8:00, and Hans Zigmund will be asked to do 10:00. Alice Creason volunteered to speak at both services on November 6th.
—Pledge Sunday is November 13th. The rector and senior warden will prepare a letter and other information to be mailed to parishioners very soon.
—The vestry discussed the following ideas concerning the purpose of the stewardship speaking opportunities: The parish is a place to put energy, thought, and prayer into positive things. The church is one of the few remaining face-to-face communities. The church is not the only way to connect to God, but it is the best way. The parish provides a sense of family where, in times of need, people show up to help. The parish changes lives and reshapes thinking.

Building and Grounds
—A tree branch has been scraping the rectory roof. Randy Oyster volunteered to look at it to see if he can remove it. If it proves too dangerous for him to remove, Pastor Orr will arrange for a landscaping company to do the work.
—Pastor Orr asked the sexton to examine the condition of the kneelers in the church. He reported that six of them need to be re-upholstered and two more are about to split. Bill and Iris Bestow looked into the job and were quoted a charge of $110. per kneeler. Anne Edwards moved to authorize the rector to arrange for repair and re-upholstering of up to ten kneelers to be paid through the building maintenance fund. After a second by Rob Carrier, the vestry voted to approve the motion.

The Feast
—Last month the vestry discussed concerns about holding the Feast of St. John the Evangelist dinner so early in the month. The vestry returned to that issue, deciding that moving The Feast from January 7th to January 14th would interfere less with school vacation times. The vestry agreed to change the date to January 14th.
—Pastor Orr asked for four volunteers to serve on a planning committee for the event. Anne Edwards and Nichole Dailor volunteered with Hans Zigmund and Zoltan Sziky nominated to serve. Rob Carrier volunteered to be an alternate.

Closing
Following prayer, the meeting ended at 8:35 PM. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for November 21st.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis, Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for November 11

Almighty God, by whose grace thy people gain courage through looking unto the heroes of faith; We lift our hearts in gratitude to thee for all who have lived valiantly and died bravely that there might be truth, liberty, and righteousness in our land. Help us to prize highly, and to guard carefully, the gifts which their loyalty and devotion have bestowed upon us. Grant us the joy of a living and vigorous faith, that we may be true as they were true, loyal as they were loyal, and serve thee and our country selflessly all the days of our life, and at last receive the victor’s crown; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (Prayers for the Burial of the Dead; For those in the armed forces).

Reflection for November 6

The Church is “the communion of Saints,” that is, a people made holy through their mutual participation in the mystery of Christ. This communion exists through history, continues in the present, and endures beyond the grave and gate of death into heaven, for God is not a God of the dead but of the living, and those still on their earthly pilgrimage continue to have fellowship with those whose work is done. The pilgrim Church and the Church at rest join in watching and praying for that great day when Christ shall come again to change and make perfect our common humanity in the image of Christ’s risen glory (Holy Women, Holy Men).

Announcements for October 23

Annual Pledge Campaign
Fall stewardship materials have been mailed. Please give them careful and prayerful attention. Pledge Sunday is November 13 or you may return your pledge cards any time before then.

Vestry Update
The Vestry met on Monday, October 17. The Columbarium project is ongoing, however construction will not begin until spring. This is due in part by a delay in getting drawings from the landscape architect, and partly due to the fact that many masonry contractors' schedules fill up quickly in the summer and fall. However, we are awaiting bids from a number of companies, and expect the project to go quickly in the spring. The Vestry approved moving the celebration of the Feast of St. John the Evangelist to one week later than it has been in the past. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, January 14, 2017. We hope that the change in date will allow more people to come who might have missed due to travel right after the Holidays.

All Souls Day Remembrance
If you have names of the faithful departed that you wish to have remembered in the service, please submit them to the parish office.

Parish Dinner Groups
Sign up for the 2017 Parish Dinner Groups continues through Sunday, November 13, 2016. Information and forms for signing up will be found on a table in the undercroft. If you have any questions regarding this unique opportunity to get to know your fellow parishioners a little bit better, please talk to Gale Michael or Pastor Orr.

Happy Socktober!
(Yes, it's a real thing--a wonderful thing). Come on, St. John's, let's get involved in this easy and great service project! What started in Tennessee five years ago with just a few dozen people has grown to an effort of more than a million people worldwide, all helping to ease the suffering of homelessness at their local level. How can we help? By donating new socks (tube socks are always a good choice but any type is great) and toiletry items (travel size is perfect). We'll collect items at St. John's through the month of October before delivering our collection to South Suburban PADS. Encourage friends, family and neighbors to get involved. Please contact Dee McManamy or Margi Strombeck with any questions or service project ideas.

Practicing our Faith Book Club
Calling all animal lovers! The November book for the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is Two Dogs and a Parrot: What Our Animal Friends Can Teach Us About Life by Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. Read the book, and then join us on Nov. 17 at 7pm in the Guild Room for our next meeting. New members are always welcome.

Vegetable Abundance

Reflection for October 23

What do young people look for in church? In research done in 250 congregations among people ages 15-29, respondents repeatedly said they were looking for congregations that were “welcoming, accepting, belonging, authentic, hospitable, and caring.” The researchers began to call this set of concerns the “warmth cluster.” Worship bands and ministry programs are not a priority, nor is busyness. Even “niceness” doesn’t work with young people. What they apparently seek at church is a sense of family, which calls for intergenerational relationships (Washington Post, September 6, cited in Christian Century, October 12, 2016).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - September 19, 2016

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry met in the church at 7:00 PM for Evening Prayer and then reconvened in the undercroft meeting room where everyone offered prayers of intercession and thanksgiving.

Attendance
Present: the rector Kristin Orr; the senior warden Anne Edwards; the junior warden Steve Hofer; vestry members Bob Burgwald, Rob Carrier, Alice Creason, Nichole Dailor, Cynthia Turnquest and Hans Zigmund; the treasurer Debbi Huggett; and the clerk Susan Marquis Absent: vestry members Randy Oyster, Ted Stone, and Zoltan Sziky

Parish Stewardship

Minutes
Anne Edwards moved to accept the minutes from the August vestry meeting, and Rob Carrier seconded. Following a vote, the motion was approved.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that we still are falling behind in collections; however, over the past month five pledging units have caught up with their pledge payments. Expenses are slightly lower than budgeted with lower utility bills and a small amount saved due to the office manager vacancy. Hans Zigmund moved to accept the August Treasurer’s Report. Steve Hofer seconded, and the motion passed.

Information

Rector’s Report
— Pastor Orr thanked everyone who took part in the recent ministry Jubilation, including those who decorated, provided food, and ran information booths.
— We have a new office manager, Betsy Sloan, who has an education degree, but her experience has been mostly in office work. The rector has spent a lot of time recently on the hiring and training aspects associated with this position.
— The regular Christian education classes begin next Sunday, September 25th. Last Sunday the children painted the atrium window using the theme of the seven days of creation. This year our high school students will teach the pre-K to grade 1 Sunday School class. Diane Walsh-Madden and Patti Pohrte will lead the 5th and 6th graders, and Cyndie Knoll is instructing the 7th and 8th graders in a curriculum called “Making It Real and Relevant.” Pastor Orr will hold classes on the lectionary three weeks per month with a multi-generational class held approximately once per month, which will be focused on giving tools to practice, nurture, and grow faith at home.
— St. John’s will host the Joliet Deanery’s Breakfast with the Bishop on November 12, 2017.

Reports from Wardens and Other Parish Organizations
There were no reports.

Upcoming Events
September 25th: First day of regular Sunday School classes
October 2nd: Annual Blessing of the Animals at the outdoor altar. The Blessing will be held in conjunction with Faith Lutheran Church, as has been the case for some years, as well as, for the first time, First Presbyterian Church of Homewood.

Discussion and Decisions

Columbarium Project
Pastor Orr said that there is very little to report. She has had problems getting phone calls returned from masonry construction leads. So far, we have only one bid for the work. The landscape architect, Scott Mehaffey, has submitted construction drawings. Ted Stone recommended a concrete contractor. Cynthia Turnquest and Bob Burgwald volunteered to make phone calls to try to find stone masons.

Parish Godparents
— Nichole Dailor presented a poster that she had made to increase awareness of the acolyte program. She will hang it on the new bulletin board in the undercroft.
— Rob Carrier reported that he attended a Daughters of the King meeting as their godparent.
— There was a discussion about how godparents can help to increase membership in the organizations they are supporting.

Church Sign
Rob Carrier and Ted Stone repaired the metal church sign located on Flossmoor Road and Leavitt Avenue.

Stewardship
— Pastor Orr reviewed the standard components of the annual stewardship appeal, which includes a mailing containing a letter from the senior warden, a financial page, and a pledge card. In addition, we typically have vestry speakers at both services for several Sundays prior to Pledge Sunday, which this year is on November 13th. The vestry voiced approval of this stewardship plan for this year. Volunteers, who will speak about why the parish is important to them and invite parishioners to join them in pledging time and talent, include:

for October 23rd:  at 8:00 AM (to be determined)
at 10:00 AM possibly Matthew and/or Benjamin Turnquest
for October 30th:  at 8:00 AM (to be determined)
       at 10:00 AM Hans Zigmund
for November 6:  at 8:00 AM Alice Creason
       at 10:00 AM Alice Creason

Convention Delegates
Pastor Orr presented a slate of delegates to attend the annual diocesan convention in November. The proposed delegates are Steve Hofer, Sue O’Brien, and Shirley Reilly; and alternates are Gale Michael, Don Rubins, and Doris Sheffer. After a motion from Rob Carrier and a second from Nichole Dailor, the slate was approved.

The Feast
The vestry held an initial discussion about the annual Feast of St. John the Evangelist, which has been scheduled for January 7th. There was general support for moving the date one week later to January 14th in order to avoid some of the scheduling conflicts from the end of the Christmas and New Year holidays. A Disco Night theme was suggested with more discussion occurring next month.

Closing
The meeting ended at 8:30 PM with prayer. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for October 17th.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for October 16

Kalanithi had abandoned the Christian faith of his devout family during his schooling but had returned to faith after realizing that if there was no God, then the best parts of living – love, honor, redemption, sacrifice, forgiveness – were also false. He refused atheism because he could not build a meaningful life on the idea of blind determinism. His need to believe in love and redemption led him back to Jesus, in whom he saw the highest value of all: “The main message of Jesus… is that mercy trumps justice every time” (Shirley Hershey Showalter, reviewing Paul Kalanithi’s book, When Breath Becomes Air; Christian Century, October 12, 2016).

Reflection for October 9

The International Geological Conference suggested last month that in about 1950 the earth entered a new epoch, the Anthropocene epoch, marked by a human impact on the earth so profound that humans are not likely to survive it. The previous epoch, the Holocene, with 12,000 years of stable climate since the last ice age, was the period when human civilization developed. Among the first marks of this new epoch were the radioactive elements from nuclear bomb tests that were blown into the stratosphere before settling down into the earth. Another sign is the emission of carbon gases that are causing global warming, the rise of sea levels, and the extinction of some plant and animal life (Guardian, August 29, cited in the Christian Century, September 28, 2016).

Those who have been to the Convention before said that it was a beautiful experience; especially the Holy Eucharist on Saturday. Reflection for September 25

A Word to the Church for the World

Greetings from Detroit, a city determined to be revived. Greetings also from the city of Flint, where we are reminded that the gift of water has for many of our brothers and sisters become contaminated.

Here we have been exhorted to set our sights beyond ourselves and to minister to the several nations where we serve and the wider world.

We lament the stark joylessness that marks our present time. We decry angry political rhetoric which rages while fissures widen within society along racial, economic, educational, religious, cultural and generational lines. We refuse to look away as poverty, cruelty and war force families to become migrants enduring statelessness and demonization. We renounce the gun violence and drug addiction that steal lives and crush souls while others succumb to fear and cynicism, abandoning any sense of neighborliness.

Yet, in all this, “we do not despair” (2 Cor. 4:8.). We remember that God in Christ entered our earthly neighborhood during a time of political volatility and economic inequality. To this current crisis we bring our faith in Jesus. By God’s grace, we choose to see in this moment an urgent opportunity to follow Jesus into our fractured neighborhoods, the nation and the world.

Every member of the church has been “called for a time such as this.” (Esther 4:14) Let prophets tell the truth in love. Let reconcilers move boldly into places of division and disagreement. Let evangelists inspire us to tell the story of Jesus in new and compelling ways. Let leaders lead with courage and joy.

In the hope of the Resurrection let us all pray for God to work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish God’s purposes on earth (House of Bishops, The Episcopal Church, September 20).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - August 15, 2016

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry met in the church at 7:00 PM for Evening Prayer and then reconvened in the undercroft meeting room where everyone offered prayers of intercession and thanksgiving.

Attendance
Present: the rector Kristin Orr; the senior warden Anne Edwards; the junior warden Steve Hofer; vestry members Bob Burgwald, Rob Carrier, Nichole Dailor, Ted Stone, Cynthia Turnquest and Zoltan Sziky; the treasurer Debbi Huggett; and the clerk Susan Marquis Absent: vestry members Alice Creason, Randy Oyster, and Hans Zigmund

Parish Stewardship

Minutes
Anne Edwards moved to accept the vestry minutes from June, and Nichole Dailor seconded. The motion was approved.

Treasurer’s Report
Because there was no vestry meeting in July to approve the June report, the treasurer presented financial reports from both June and July.
In June and continuing into July, collections were off-pace. Pledge income, however, is difficult to divide by the month since some people prepay for the entire year, while others pay at the end of the year. Rob Carrier moved to accept the June treasurer’s report as presented, and Cynthia Turnquest seconded. The motion passed.
In July, the church made about $350 from the Ice Cream Social due to contributions from parishioners. Without the approximately $700 contributed, the event would have lost money. Savings in July were the result of lower-than-expected natural gas usage as well as some salary savings due to having no office manager. Cynthia Turnquest moved to accept the July report, and Zoltan Sziky seconded. The motion then was approved.

Rector’s Discretionary Report
Pastor Orr distributed a report of the Rector’s Discretionary Account for the second quarter of 2016. The report showed income from the approved parish budget as well as from contributions from parishioners. After a motion to accept the report from Steve Hofer and a second from Nichole Dailor, the motion was approved.

Rector’s Report
—The church has placed help wanted notices for the office manager position on the diocesan website and on a Moms and Dads of Homewood-Flossmoor Facebook page. There have been four applicants whom the rector and senior warden are interviewing. Pastor Orr hopes to have the position filled by the beginning of September. In the meantime, former office manager Tracie Moxley has been hired for a few hours weekly to post pledge and other contributions.
—Jack Voigt again paid for a thorough annual cleaning of the kitchen.
—Pastor Orr thanked Bill Moser, Donna Blackburn, Cyndie Knoll, and Alison Deniston for their help covering the office during her vacation. She also thanked Steve Hofer, Bill Bestow, Debbi Huggett, Harold Keene, and Donna Blackburn for being on-call for emergencies during that time.
—The bracket for the church sign on Flossmoor Road and Leavitt Avenue recently arrived. A volunteer is needed to do the restoration work on the sign. Rob Carrier offered to look at it.
—Bishop Lee has had to reduce the diocesan staff due to the economy. Investment income is down, and parish pledges have gone down as well. The diocese had been depleting capital to cover deficit budgets, but without an obvious change coming in income, the bishop has decided that the responsible path is to reduce the diocesan budget.

Wardens’ Reports and Reports from Other Parish Organizations
Steve Hofer reported that his St. John’s history project is moving along nicely. He further reported, in his role as landscape godparent, that Lynn Ruschhaupt has planted hostas north of the church and that the new plantings at the south end of the church are doing well.

Upcoming Parish Events
—Pastor Orr handed out a draft of a calendar of parish events for the August 2016 - July 2017 year. Cynthia Turnquest volunteered to print a poster-size copy of the calendar for easel display, and Pastor Orr will distribute copies to parishioners via e-mail in the next “e-vangelist” and will leave paper copies on the information tables.
—August 21st at the 10:00 AM service - blessing of the backpacks
—September 11th at coffee hour - Jubilation ministry fair

Discussion and Decisions

Columbarium Project
Pastor Orr hired landscape architect Scott Mehaffey to draw up building plans for the benches. The columbarium sub-committee, consisting of the rector, Rob Carrier, Ted Stone, Cynthia Turnquest, and Anne Edwards, deferred the decision on the wood bench, but they did choose a stone for the benches and an aggregate stone for the walkway. Mark Moxley has been very helpful regarding supplies and has the stone order ready to submit. Best Brick in Homewood bid on the project. Pastor Orr is trying to get more bids on the concrete and stone mason work and asked the vestry to send her referrals.

Stewardship
The ministry marketing subcommittee (Alice Creason, Nichole Dailor, Anne Edwards, and Steve Hofer with help from Cynthia Turnquest) will work on a display for the undercroft that portrays the life of the parish. This will change monthly and will be in place by the Jubilation. The vestry godparents of the various ministries will be in charge of overseeing the displays according to the following schedule:

September - acolytes (Nichole Dailor)
October - PADS (Ted Stone)
November - choir (Hans Zigmund)
December - open for various holiday ministries
January - Sunday school (Cynthia Turnquest)
February - youth group (Alice Creason)
March - men’s group (Randy Oyster)
April - Altar Guild (Bob Burgwald)
May - food garden (Zoltan Sziky)
June - landscaping (Steve Hofer)
July - Daughters of the King (Rob Carrier)
August - catch-all (Nichole Dailor)

The church will send out e-blasts as separate electronic mailings of event announcements and posters. Event coordinators can contact Cynthia Turnquest, who will design announcements, and then the rector will send them out to parishioners as colorful event PDFs. The e-blasts also will be used to announce ministry opportunities for the month, including volunteer and donation requests.

Closing
The meeting ended at 9:10 PM. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for September 19th.

Reflection for September 18

Likeness
We have no idea what God looks like—so what can it meant that God creates us in God’s own image, in God’s likeness? Maybe it’s love that makes us like God (Br. Mark Brown, Society of Saint John the Evangelist, Brother, Give Us a Word.)

New Outreach Opportunity for Teens and Adults
Only have a little time to spare but you care about making a big difference? All hands, all minds, all ages invited to join in service. Look for St. John's new outreach ministry at this Sunday's Jubilation. We've listened to our high school teens and this is what they've told us: We are busy with academics, sports, clubs and jobs; the pressure can be intense. You also manage to carve out time for church and want to do good works. This last part makes you very special and--in today's world, sadly--a rarity. Our diocese has learned this the hard way, which has led to a significantly reduced diocesan youth program, including the elimination of decades-old programs like Happening. That's why St. John's wants to meet the challenge and support your commitment to our parish and your own spiritual growth. Here's the idea... each quarter we'll put forth at least one service project that parishioners of all ages and interests can join in. No regularly scheduled "meetings". Just projects and dates and details. You choose the ones you are able to do (and suggest your own ideas). We'll invite other Flossmoor churches to join us. Involve your friends, family, neighbors--whatever makes it fun and meaningful for you, and in the process, we'll help heal the world. God loves it when we do that.

Vegetable Abundance
This week: Arugula, green and jalapeno peppers.

Reflection for September 11

A Prayer for the Commemoration of 9/11
God the compassionate one, whose loving care extends to all the world, we remember this day your children of many nations and many faiths whose lives were cut short by the fierce flames of anger and hatred. Console those who continue to suffer and grieve, and give them comfort and hope as they look to the future. Out of what we have endured, give us the grace to examine our relationships with those who perceive us as the enemy, and show our leaders the way to use our power to serve the good of all for the healing of the nations. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord who, in reconciling love, was lifted up from the earth that he might draw all things to himself. Amen. (Prepared by the Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold for September 11 anniversary observances.)

Reflection for September 4

Back to school, back to faith

This time of year my Facebook feed is full of photos of kids headed back to school…. But back to school isn't just for kids and their parents. This time of year is an invitation to all of us to renew our learning and growth…. Too many people check out of learning about their faith.

In my time as a parish priest, I met with lots of families facing a crisis of some kind — a death, a job loss, a broken relationship, a health problem Too often, their brittle faith was shattered by the normal tragedies of human experience. And it’s no wonder. Without adult learning, we’re left to make sense of adult problems with a child’s faith. A mature faith helps us face life’s difficulties and it can even help us love difficult people. Deep faith, nourished by knowledge and inquiry, is not only more robust, but it is more vibrant. We discover new ways to praise God and more reasons to thank God (The Rev. Scott Gunn, Executive Director, Forward Movement; Read the entire piece HERE).

Announcements for August 28

From the Senior Warden
At the meeting on August 15th, the Vestry discussed plans to highlight the ministries of the church each month on bulletin boards in the undercroft. This will begin at the Jubilation on September 11, and continue throughout the year. An idea was introduced to create a more formal system to solicit volunteers for church projects and needs that are not necessarily ongoing. Vestry meetings are open to anyone, and the official minutes of each Vestry meeting are posted on this blog after they are approved.

2016-2017 Parish Calendar

Doubt
The God we know has left a trail of crumbs for us, but remains to a great extent elusive and just beyond the grasp of absolute certainties. And that in itself is a gift; we might say we have received the gift of doubt. Just enough doubt to take this world seriously, this world that God so loves. (Br. Mark Brown, Society of Saint John the Evangelist, Brother, Give Us a Word).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - June 20, 2016

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry met in the church at 7:00 PM for Evening Prayer and then reconvened in the undercroft meeting room where everyone offered prayers of intercession and thanksgiving.

Attendance
Present: the rector Kristin Orr; the senior warden Anne Edwards; the junior warden Steve Hofer; vestry members Bob Burgwald, Rob Carrier, Alice Creason, Nichole Dailor, Cynthia Turnquest and Zoltan Sziky; the treasurer Debbi Huggett; and the clerk Susan Marquis
Absent: vestry members Randy Oyster, Ted Stone, and Hans Zigmund

Parish Stewardship

Minutes
Alice Creason moved to accept the minutes from the May vestry meeting, and Rob Carrier seconded. Following a vote, the motion was approved.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that we are 3% behind in income, which is in keeping with the 97% of pledges that typically are collected. Expenses paid out are as expected. Bob Burgwald moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, and Anne Edwards seconded. The motion passed.

Information

Rector’s Report
—Pastor Orr received a letter from parishioner Ginny Eysenbach, requesting the use of the undercroft for a 50th anniversary celebration in September. The rector approved the request. Regarding space use in general, an Alcoholics Anonymous group and the Grand Prairie Children’s Choir use space and are charged a small fee. The Girl Scouts use space occasionally.
—Pastor Orr ordered a new bracket for the church welcome sign on Leavitt Avenue and Flossmoor Road. She is grateful that the village allows the sign.
—The lift doors had not been closing properly. The lift was under warranty for parts but not for labor. After Pastor Orr pointed out that the installer had made mistakes, the lift was repaired at no cost to St. John’s.
—The air conditioning in the worship space broke two weeks ago. It has been repaired, although the bill is not in yet.
—The rector and the senior warden will be on vacation at the same time next month. A group of former wardens along with the junior warden will be on call during that time to handle parish emergencies.

Wardens’ Reports and Reports from Other Parish Organizations
Steve Hofer reported that he is continuing to collect information on the history of St. John’s. Currently, he is involved in typing notes into his computer to be printed later. There is a gap in the years 1994 to 2003 in which there are no listed vestry members and no minutes. Steve requested that anyone who has information about this missing data should contact him.

Upcoming Parish Events
The parish again will welcome the community to the annual Ice Cream Social after the Flossmoor parade on July 4th. Help is needed on July 3rd and 4th, and especially for clean-up on the 4th.

Discussion and Decisions

Columbarium Project
The design subcommittee has met once and will meet again soon. So far, only one bid has been received from a potential contractor.

Parish Godparents
Rob Carrier reported that he has contacted the Daughters of the King. Pastor Orr said that she welcomes short status reports to publish in the “e-vangelist” and reminded vestry godparents to think about and identify other people in the parish who might have something to offer their ministries. The senior warden offered to add a couple of comments to the “e-vangelist” following reports at each vestry meeting. Landscaping godparent Steve Hofer reported that native plants will be added to the south end of the education wing where bushes recently were removed. Pastor Orr will be doing the planting.

Stewardship
The vestry discussed ideas for the fall pledge campaign. Much of the discussion centered around publicizing the activities of the church community by use of bulletin boards and posters in the undercroft and sending out electronic reports once a month that highlight a ministry. Alice Creason, Nichole Dailor, Anne Edwards, and Steve Hofer volunteered to serve on a parish ministry marketing committee with help from Cynthia Turnquest.

Closing

Following prayer, the meeting concluded at 8:35 P.M. The next meeting is scheduled for August 15th.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for August 14

For our Country
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (Book of Common Prayer, p. 820).

Reflection for August 7

My parents prayed with us a lot when we were little…. Most nights, after we were fed and bathed and jammied and tucked in, my dad went from bed to bed, put his hand on our heads, and blessed us.

I never consciously planned to continue this practice, but when my first daughter was born it seemed the thing to do. Now she’s two, and it’s an established part of her bedtime routine, something she reminds me to do if I forget. Not that she reliably appreciates the blessing—half the time she squirms and resists it, or tries to negotiate for a song or a story instead. Yet she’s decided that peace and amen are her lines, not just mine, and when we get to those parts she invariably stops fighting it and chimes in (Steve Thorngate, “Blest and Kept,” The Christian Century, August 3, 2016).

Reflection for July 31

[My] spiritual gifts do not seem to include the gift of solar spirituality. Instead, I have been given the gift of lunar spirituality, in which the divine light available to me waxes and wanes with the season. When I go out on my porch at night, the moon never looks the same way twice. Some nights it is as round and bright as a headlight; other nights it is thinner than the sickle hanging in my garage. Some nights it is high in the sky, and other nights low over the mountains. Some nights it is altogether gone, leaving a vast web of stars that are brighter in its absence. All in all, the moon is a truer mirror for my soul than the sun that looks the same way every day (Barbara Brown Taylor, Learning to Walk in the Dark).

Let us live out a mission that seeks to rescue the world from its present peril, to save those drowning in a raging river of despair, to rescue those caught in a wasteland of hopelessness. Let us commit ourselves to give the waters of baptism to those who thirst for justice (From a sermon by former Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Edmond Lee Browning (1929-2016)).
