• Fish Fry Recap
  Proceeds from the Brotherhood of St Andrew’s Lenten fish fry totaled $907. The money will be dedicated to support the Brotherhood and St. John’s longstanding commitment to PADS, a homeless ministry here in the south suburbs. Thanks again to Bill Bestow and the many others who made it all happen.
  
  
• Radical Welcome: Workshops with Stephanie Spellers
  Want to do some hands-on work on how remixing our Anglican tradition can help us serve the mission of God? Stephanie Spellers, whose diocesan convention keynote address last November sparked energy around the diocese, returns for two workshops this spring. This first is May 5 at St. Paul’s DeKalb; the second is June 16 at Christ Church, Waukegan. Anyone is welcome to attend. More information and registration are available on the diocesan website.
  
  
• Bluegrass Concert May 20
  On Sunday, May 20, the Grande Prairie Singers present “Grande Prairie: My Old Mountain Home,” featuring the bluegrass mass A World Beloved, at 4:00 p.m. at Faith United Protestant Church, Park Forest. The concert includes a gen-yoo-wine bluegrass band, “What Wondrous Love,” and Charles Wesley's unforgettable “Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown.” Tickets are available now from Betsy Burgwald for only $10 each.
  
  
• Adult Literacy: You Can Make a Difference
  The Adult Literacy Institute at Prairie State College needs volunteers for rewarding jobs and the chance to give back to the community. If you decide to volunteer, you will receive training, and you won’t be paired with anyone who is beyond your ability help. You can work as little as one hour a week to mentor one student or you can choose to work with more students. Tutors are needed in reading, writing and math. Most of the students are very motivated adults who work hard, but have had few opportunities for education. For more information talk to Bill Moser or call Ms. Dora Ivory at (708) 709-3724.

Take out meals will be available. All profits will benefit PADS. This year’s event will also feature jazz and blues entertainer, Smiley Tillman. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends and neighbors! Sign up in church on Sunday or call the parish office by Tuesday, March 20, so we can get a head count.

• A Plea for Yarn
  A plea for yarn donations for a group of elderly Japanese women from the tsunami ravaged fishing village of Shichigahamo, Japan. The yarn ministry group at St. John’s will be collecting yarn, new or partial skeins, knitting needles and crochet hooks for the next six weeks to send to the Yarn Alive Club in Japan. The article from the Wall Street Journal regarding the plea for yarn will be on display in the undercroft, along with a container for your donations through April 29th. • Holy Family Organ Recital Next Sunday
  The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family will host a special organ recital next Sunday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m., followed by Choral Evensong, to honor the Annunciation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All in attendance are invited to stay afterward for a casual potluck dinner in the Parish Hall. There is no charge, but goodwill offerings will be accepted. So, if you’ve never heard Holy Family’s magnificent pipe organ, why not give your ears this simple auditory treat.

  The South Suburban InterFaith Job Search Network is hosting a special workshop next Tuesday, March 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at B'nai Yehuda Beth Shalom in Homewood. Entitled “From Hiring to Hired,” the program will be led by Faith Newman, Assistant Director of Human Resources at Olivet Nazarene University in Rolling Meadows.   Experience Celtic spirituality through the work and personality of its greatest advocate, St. Patrick.   We will meet this Monday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room at the church. If you are unable to attend the gatherings, we also welcome items you create at home. Our handy work is donated to a number of charities. All levels of experienced are welcome. If you would like to learn to knot, Sue O’Brien is willing to instruct. • Lenten Study at St. John’s continues on Wednesday evenings
  Pastor Orr is offering a study course on Wednesday evenings during Lent again this year. This year’s topic is the Ten Commandments: Their Interpretation and Relevance in Contemporary Society. Classes take place in the church from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Each class will stand alone. Come to the whole series, or come whenever you can.
  
  
• Honoring Pastor Orr’s Ordination Anniversary
  Contributions in honor of Pastor Orr’s 20th ordination anniversary will be sent to her seminary, Virginia Seminary, to help rebuild the seminary chapel, destroyed by fire in October 2010. Contributions will be received in the undercroft or parish office through March 4.
  
  
• Faith in Films: Amish Grace on March 9
  The story of the strength of a community and their powerful commitment to forgiveness after a gunman kills five children in the Amish community of Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. The film will be shown in the Guild Room, Friday, March 9, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

• New Mural in Children’s Worship
  This mural has recently been completed in the youth worship space. It reproduces the children’s stained glass window in the Prayer Corner (former baptistery) in the church. The text comes from Matthew 19:14 where Jesus says, Let the little children come to me, and forbid them not. The children will dedicate the mural next Sunday, March 4, during youth worship. Thank you to Tracie Moxley and Patti Pohrte for painting this wonderful gift to the children and the parish.
  
  
• Lenten Fish Fry Scheduled for March 23
  Mark your calendars for the traditional Friday evening Lenten fish fry, presented by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. More details to follow.
  
  
• Chrism Day on March 3
  All people of the diocese are invited to join Bishop Lee on Saturday, March 3, at St. Paul and the Redeemer, 4945 Dorchester Ave, in Hyde Park for Chrism Day. The program begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Chrism Mass at 11:00 a.m.
  
  
• Lenten Study at St. John’s begins this Wednesday

Contributions in honor of this anniversary will be sent to Pastor Orr’s seminary, Virginia Seminary, to help rebuild the seminary chapel, destroyed by fire in October 2010. • Lenten Quiet Day at Church of the Holy Family
  A Lenten Quiet Day will be held on Saturday, March 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Church of the Holy Family, Orchard Drive and Sauk Trail, Park Forest. The Rev. Dr. David Moffett-Moor will be the conductor and will speak on Celtic Christianity as seen through the faith and practice of St. Patrick. Sponsored by The Spirituality Network of Chicago, the day will include meditations, time for silent reflection, small group sharing, and prayer. Lunch is included in the suggested donation of $45.   The Friends of the IPO present the third annual Rising Star Showcase on April 17 (Palm Sunday) at 4:00 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church. The benefit concert for the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will feature seven talented musicians from the Southland, ages 8 – 18, playing violin, viola, piano, clarinet, and trombone. • Lenten Study Series: Baptism—Jesus’ and Ours
  Again this year Pastor Orr is offering a Lenten study series on Wednesday evenings. A handout with information is available in the undercroft. The class will address some of the big topics in Christian theology. This week’s class will address baptism. As a starting point, we will draw upon Dorothy Sayers’ plays on the life of Jesus: The Man Born to Be King. No soup this year. Just come for class in the church Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Although the classes are linked by Sayers’ plays, each class stands alone, so come when you can.
  
  
• Parish Raking Day
  Please come help rake up twigs and other winter debris on the church grounds: Saturday, March 26, beginning at 9:00 a.m. All hands are welcome. We will have several rakes, but if you have your own, please bring it. Another landscape work day in April will help prepare the beds and plantings for the growing season.

And thanks to all of the children who made TWO fabulous A******* banners and “buried” them—to remain hidden throughout Lent. • Little Hands Meets Next Sunday, November 21

• Thanks to all those seafood lovers in you!
  The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is pleased to report that its “Brother Al Kromer Memorial Lobsterfest IV” on Nov. 6 was a rousing success. In the end, 180 tasty Maine crustaceans were purchased, enough to raise (after expenses) $2,122 for charity, to be shared among Episcopal Relief & Development, Children's Oncology Services Inc., the Good Shepherd Center, South Suburban PADS, and the Rich Township Food Pantry. In particular, the Brotherhood is indebted not only to the parish, but also to members Bob Dehn, Bill Bestow, Bob Berner, Ted Stone, Bill Sole, Bob d'Olivieria, Sam Otoo, Mark Moxley and Rob McManamy for their many contributions last Friday and Saturday. Also, June Fidanza of the Good Shepherd Center deserves special mention in appreciation of her tireless efforts to promote Lobsterfest beforehand and then to see it through to the bitter end, i.e. cleanup! Finally, thanks also to Marilyn Kromer for lending her guiding support to help us do justice to Brother Al's memory.

  The annual community interfaith Thanksgiving service with the Viking choir will be held Wednesday, November 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Anshe Sholom, 20820 Western Avenue in Olympia Fields. St. John’s Thanksgiving celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be Thursday morning, November 25, at 10:00 a.m.

• Final Week for ‘Brother Al’ Lobsterfest!
  All orders must be received by 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, either in the Church office or in Rob McManamy's e-mail box, for us to book the proper number of seats on next Friday's Delta Airlines flight from Boston to O'Hare. Upon arrival, the crustacean cargo will be transported to our church kitchen, where they will be iced down and available for pick-up from Noon to 6 pm next Saturday in the undercroft. So, if you haven't done so yet, please help us honor the memory of beloved Brother Al Kromer by supporting this fundraiser for his favorite charity, Children's Oncology Services of Illinois, as well as for Episcopal Relief & Development, South Suburban PADS and the Rich Township Food Pantry.

(Older or younger children who are interested are also welcome.) We will make “official” Little Hands tee shirts and discuss outreach projects for this year. Little Hands is an opportunity for children to participate in a ministry of service.
  
  
• Next Daughters of the King Meeting is October 16
  St. John’s chapter of Daughters of the King will meet Saturday, October 16, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. (starting with a light breakfast). We’ve started a new study from the national office, reflections that undoubtedly will encourage discussion as well as our commitment to prayer. Please join us in the Guild Room. Announcements for September 26

• New Director of Music
  The Rev. Peter B. Irvine has recently accepted the position of Director of Music at St. John’s. He has a long history of experience in church music, having served most recently as Precentor (Director of Music) at Christ Episcopal Church in Waukegan. He and his wife, Janet, are moving to Homewood and look forward to joining the St. John’s community. His first Sunday will be October 10.
  
  
• Christian Formation Classes Are in Full Swing
  Christian Formation classes for all ages have begun, but it is never too late to join in the endeavor of Christian formation. Classes begin at 9:00 a.m. All children and adults are invited to participate.
  
  
• Blessing of the Animals, October 3
  Our annual celebration of the blessing God bestows upon us through companion animals will take place Sunday, October 3, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Altar. Once again we will share this celebration with Faith Lutheran Church. All pets and their companions are welcome.
  
  
• Save the Date: ‘Lobsterfest’ returns November 6
  St. John’s chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew men’s service group has selected Saturday, November 6, as the date for its annual ‘Lobsterfest’ charity fundraiser. In honor of recently fallen Brother Al Kromer, who had worked so hard on so many previous Lobsterfests (among countless other events), a portion of the proceeds from this year’s sale will go to the Deanna Lyn Kromer Scholarship Fund at Children’s Oncology Services, Inc. The balance will support the PADS ministry and Episcopal Relief and Development. Watch this space for more details in the weeks to come.

• St. John’s Brunch Bunch and Jubilation Next Sunday, September 12
  St. John’s annual celebration of community takes place Sunday, September 12, in the undercroft following the 10:00 service. Sunday School registration will take place and many St. John’s ministries will have information booths. Sandwiches will be served. All are invited. Please come.
  
  
• At a crossroads, Brotherhood to meet Friday, September 10
  St. John's chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew men's group will kick off its new service season with an important membership dinner meeting on Friday, September 10, at 7 p.m. in the undercroft. Longtime president Rob McManamy and lifelong secretary Bob Dehn are both stepping down, so new officers need to be elected and a new course set for the Brotherhood at St. John's. All men of the church, including current, past, and prospective members, are urged to attend and share in the pizza, pop and prayerful discussion.
  
  
• Daughters Meet Saturday Morning, September 18
  St. John’s chapter of Daughters of the King—a lay order for prayers and service—will meet Saturday, September 18, 9:00-11:00 a.m., starting with a light breakfast. All women of the parish are welcome. Please join us!

  The parish office will be closed Monday, September 6, in honor of the Labor Day holiday.

• The Second Annual Jackie Campbell Memorial Blood Drive is next Sunday, June 6
  St. John’s parish blood drive is organized in memory of parishioner Jackie Campbell who died in the spring of 2009. Jackie joyfully served and participated in the life of the parish for 33 years. In her final day of life she required massive infusions of blood. We honor her by giving the gift of life to others. Please sign up now! • Parish Picnic and Farewell to Jeff Peterson Next Sunday
  Everyone is invited to the parish picnic next Sunday, June 6, following the 10:00 service. Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided. If you can, please bring a side or dessert. Weather permitting, the picnic will be held on the south lawn. We will also take this opportunity to thank Jeff Peterson for his music ministry at St. John’s and wish him Godspeed as he heads for his new job at Baylor University.

• More Mayfair Thanks... this time for our generous donors
  In this space last week, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew thanked all those who physically made this month’s ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner a reality. This week, we thank those parishioners who helped ensure the event’s financial success by donating specialty cakes, artwork and myriad other items for our auction, which ultimately raised some $2,600 for distribution to our designated charities. • Pentecost, May 23
  Next Sunday, May 23, is Pentecost. There is a long-time, informal tradition for people to wear red to church on Pentecost. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red, signifying the “tongues, as of fire” that alighted upon the disciples. It is also a traditional date for baptisms and we will be baptizing two new Christians at the 10:00 a.m. service.
  
  
• ‘Mayfair’ Magic Recaptured; Moms to Benefit
  More than 80 parishioners and guests filled the undercroft and Guild Room last Saturday evening for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s annual ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner, which ultimately raised more than $3,200. Falling on the eve of Mothers’ Day, this year’s event placed a special emphasis on mothers, targeting at least half of its proceeds to St. Mary’s Episcopal Adoption Services and Maternity Counseling, which provided the night’s guest speaker, Ms. Jan Lynch, a St. Mary’s board member and adoptive parent. The balance will go to Episcopal Relief & Development, which also helps moms and their families around the world. While individual ‘Mayfair’ donors will be thanked individually and formally in the days ahead, the Brotherhood does want to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who gave so generously of their time, not to mention energy and sweat, all of which proved necessary to pull off this rewarding event. Specifically, ‘Mayfair 2010’ is indebted to the brawn and legwork of Margi & Jack Strombeck; Sue & Bob Berner; Iris & Bill Bestow; Cynthia Turnquest; Mark Moxley; Anna Alsman; Ted Stone; Stewart Scott; Alex Fullam; Leighton Whittaker; and Dee, Elliot & Glynnis McManamy. • Congratulations and Farewell to Jeff Peterson
  St. John’s Director of Music, Jeffrey Peterson, has recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching and the Head of Music for the Opera Department at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Congratulations! His last Sunday at St. John’s will be June 6.
  
  
• Faith in Films: Steel Magnolias on May 14
  For the final show of this season, Faith in Films will screen Steel Magnolias on Friday, May 14, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room. The “steel magnolias” are portrayed by the remarkable cast of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts. Popcorn is served. • School Uniform Program Exceeds Goal
  Our parish goal was to donate at least 269 uniforms to help children in developing countries attend school. That’s one for each parishioner. So far we have purchased 271! Thank God for the children of St. John’s and their faithful commitment to this project. For those who have not yet participated, we will continue to receive donations throughout the Easter season.
