We welcome the Rev. Sam Portaro back to St. John’s this Sunday. Before he retired he served as chaplain to Brent House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Chicago.
Lent Adult Study Series
This year the Lenten study series is titled “Cloud of Witnesses.” It will explore some of the lesser- known saints that are remembered in the Episcopal Church. Classes begin at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings in the church. Next week’s class will be on scientist saints.
Lent Fish Fry – March 31
Save the Date! The St. Barnabas Men’s Fellowship of St. John’s and Holy Family will sponsor their annual Lent Fish Fry on Friday, March 31. Watch for flyers with all the details.
SWIFT Interfaith Speakers Forum comes to Homewood March 19
SWIFT will be hosting a speakers forum titled “You Believe in Angels?: Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Perspectives” from 3:00PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 19 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 1885 Riegel Road, Homewood. Also that weekend, SWIFT co-founder Khalid Mozaffar will present “Islam 101” on Saturday, March 18 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the American Islamic Association, 8860 W. St. Francis Rd, Frankfort. Grande Prairie Singers Times Three
“Hoorah for Handel!” is the next Grande Prairie Singers concert, held at 4 PM, Sunday, March 12, Trinity Lutheran Church, 6850 W 159th St., Tinley Park. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for students with ID. On Sunday, March 26, the Singers will be part of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra's Rodgers & Hammerstein concert at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights (phone 800.838.3006 for tickets). Finally, $5 raffle tickets are available (1st prize, $1,000) from the Singers for the May 21st drawing (winners need not be present). See Michael Soto, Bob Burgwald, or Betsy Elliot for tickets for March 12 and the raffle.

Ash Wednesday Services
Ash Wednesday is March 1. The Imposition of Ashes with Holy Communion will be offered at St. John’s at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Come for the traditional pre-Lent pancake supper Tuesday, February 28, from 5:00 – 6:30 PM in the undercroft. Pancakes, bacon and sausage. Tickets at the door: $5/adults, $3/children. All proceeds benefit the youth group service projects.
This Sunday: Intergenerational Sunday School -- Prayer
This Sunday, February 26, all ages are invited to a class with Pastor Orr on the practice of daily (or at least regular) prayer at home. Tools and suggestions. Meet in the adult classroom in the education wing.
The Observance of a Holy Lent
We are asked by the church to observe the season of Lent not only in our worship but throughout our daily lives. A handout, “Lent for Dummies,” with suggestions for observing Lent is available on the information tables. Several booklets with daily devotions are also available.

The Men's Group will be meeting Saturday, March 4 from 7:30AM to 9:00AM at Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest. Afterwards, the Men's Group invites the men of the group and anyone else who is interested to join us as we visit the Frankfort Mosque for their open house and for coffee, tea, and snacks at 10:00AM. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about our Muslim neighbors. If anyone has any questions about the event, please ask Rob McManamy.

Blessing of the Animals Recap
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Blessing of the Animals last Sunday. It was wonderful to share this celebration with pets and people from Faith Lutheran and First Presbyterian Churches in Homewood. A list of contest winners and photos are posted in the undercroft.
All Souls Day Remembrance
On November 2 the church remembers “that vast body of the faithful” who share in the company of the redeemed with the well-known saints, but are “unknown to the wider fellowship of the church.” It is a day to remember, in particular, family and friends who have died during the last year. St. John’s will commemorate All Souls Day with a service at 7:00 PM on November 2. We will name all of the faithful departed who have been buried from St. John’s during the last year or have been remembered in the Prayers of the People. If you have additional names you would like added to the commemoration, please submit them to the parish office.
United Thank Offering Information
The United Thank Offering was begun in 1889 by the Women’s Auxiliary to the Board of Mission of the Episcopal Church. Every penny contributed goes to grants that support the mission and outreach projects of the church. Handouts with more information about UTO are located on the information tables. We will organize an “ingathering” of St. John’s contributions for sometime in early November so that our contributions can be offered and combined with others presented at Diocesan Convention.
Visit the Holy Land with Bishop Lee
Bishop Jeffrey Lee and the Very Rev. Dominic Barrington, Dean of St. James Cathedral, will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land May 9-20, 2017. Participation in the trip is open; a deposit is due by October 31. Read more HERE.
Episcopal Men's Group BBQ set for Saturday, Oct. 15
The prayerful males of St. John's in Flossmoor and Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest gathered at SJE on Saturday, Oct. 1, for a kickoff fellowship breakfast to start their fall ministry season. (Our thanks to Deacon John Whennen for leading our discussion.) Those who missed missed out, though, are still in luck >> The E-Men's group will hold a 2nd, more casual, October event on Saturday, October 15, 7 pm, at Mike Madden's house. (The start time is a little later to accommodate those at Holy Family attending their weekly 5:30 pm Saturday service.) All men of both churches are encouraged to attend -- and to help us decide on a new name, among other charitable endeavors. Who said spirituality can't be fun? Or delicious? RSVP to Mike by Thursday, Oct. 13, and please plan to bring a side or dessert.

Annual Pledge Campaign
Please seriously and prayerfully consider your annual pledge of time, talent and treasure. You may return your pledge card to the parish office, place it in the offering plate on Sunday, or place it on the altar on pledge Sunday, November 22.
Looking Ahead to the Holiday Cookie Walk
Save the date. The annual cookie walk is December 5th. We need bakers and helpers. Questions? Call Alison Deniston.
Loaves & Fishes Next Sunday
Our annual Thanksgiving-themed Sunday brunch will be next Sunday, November 15, following the 10:00 AM service. Side dishes or desserts to share are always welcome, but most importantly, come!

We will be collecting for various organizations hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children for this winter. We would like to have the items by November 15th. Collections bins will be located in the undercroft and at the office entrance.

Information is available in the undercroft on adopting a senior or family for Christmas through the ReVive Christmas Basket program. If you prefer, you may also make a cash contribution and children of the parish will shop and wrap presents for a family. Wrapped and packaged gifts need to be dropped at the parish office before 9:00 AM, Friday, December 4.

Today is the last day to sign up for Parish Dinner Groups. Information and forms for signing up will be found on a table in the undercroft. If you have any questions regarding this unique opportunity to get to know your fellow parishioners a little bit better, please talk to Gale Michael or Pastor Orr. Building on its inspiring comeback last month, St. John's reborn Episcopal Men's Group will meet again this Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 a.m. in the church undercroft. Once again, after morning prayer and a hearty, marginally healthy breakfast, our own Deacon John Whennen will lead reflections on the week's Gospel and its practical application to current events and our daily lives. This week, we will also discuss community service and the group's role in helping to fill a large ReVive Christmas Basket. As promised, these meetings end promptly at 9 a.m., so you can return to families, recreation and/or duties refreshed and spiritually renewed.

Parish Photograph for the Flossmoor Yearbook: October 25
The Village of Flossmoor is creating a photographic yearbook. Residents, businesses, churches and other organizations are all participating. Our parish photograph will be taken Sunday morning, October 25, following the 10:00 AM service. We hope everyone can participate!
Yarn Ministry Needs the Congregation’s Assistance-
We will be collecting for various organizations hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children for this winter. The first group we have been asked to contribute to is “SoulScarves,” a human warmth project from Grace Place Episcopal Church in Chicago. Grace Place serves breakfast to over 150 predominantly male guests each Saturday morning. We would like to have the items for them by November 15th. The other group will be PADS, for various people in need. We urgently request all the crocheters, knitters, and shoppers in the parish, please help the Yarn Ministry make this a very successful project. Collections bins will be located in the undercroft and at the office entrance.

New Parking Regulations in Flossmoor
New parking regulations went into effect October 1 in Flossmoor. There is no change to parking regulations on Leavitt, Central and Park. (Parking is still permitted on both sides of Leavitt; regulations on Central and Park remain as they currently are.) If, however, you park on Bruce or Burns, note that parking is now allowed only on the non-hydrant side of the street (the west side). More information and a map are available HERE.
Episcopal Men’s Group 2.0 Reboots, Ready for More!
Back by popular demand, the St. John's Episcopal Men's Group held its inaugural breakfast meeting on Saturday, Oct. 3, and nearly a dozen thoughtful adult Christian males participated. Led in prayerful study and discussion by Deacon John Whennen, attendees uniformly agreed afterward that a bond had formed and something worth cultivating had been created. Come, see for yourself what that "something" is, at the group's next meeting, Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 a.m. in the undercroft. As promised, the meeting ends promptly at 9 a.m., so you all will be able to return your many weekend responsibilities, refreshed and spiritually renewed.

The Living Faithfully adult Sunday School class continues a course on “Lost Christianities,” a look at the diversity within the early Christian movement and the evolution of what is now known as orthodox Christianity. All are welcome; you may join the class at any time. Sundays at 9:00 AM in Classroom 4 in the education wing.
