Parish Picnic Next Sunday May 21 (Volunteers Needed)
During the 10:00 AM service on May 21 we will celebrate the final Sunday of Sunday School. Then we will gather on the south lawn for the annual parish picnic and planting of the parish food garden. Volunteers are needed to help set up for the picnic. Please contact Cyndie Knoll if you can help.
No Ascension Day Service This Year
Because the Rector will be out of town, there will be no service this year on Ascension Day, May 25. We will celebrate Ascensiontide Sunday, May 28.
Practicing Our Faith Book Club
The Practicing Our Faith Book Club is meeting on Thursday, May 18 at 7pm in the Guild Room to discuss Truth Speaks to Power: The Counterculture Nature of Scripture by Walter Brueggemann, which “invites readers to take a closer look at the subversive messages found within the Old Testament.” New members are always welcome.

Wear gardening clothes, bring your rake and help beautify St. John’s landscape for spring. Helpers are needed to clear out beds after the winter and spread mulch. Following the 10:00 AM service.

If you have now empty plastic Easter eggs left over from St. John’s Easter egg hunt or others, you may bring them to St. John’s to be used next year. A collection box is near the parish office.

St. John’s Joins Interfaith Group
At its April meeting, St. John’s vestry voted to join the SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT), the 15-year-old area group that promotes meaningful dialogue and joint community service among the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. St. John's becomes the 15th faith community to join the group, which includes churches, synagogues, and mosques. Of note, we are also the first Episcopal church ever to join SWIFT. Looking ahead, each congregation designates two representatives to help steer SWIFT planning and events. Rob McManamy and Bryan Burke will be St. John’s liaisons. The pair already attended SWIFT's annual planning retreat last Sunday in Frankfort, and will have more info to share soon. Thank You to Landscape Workers
A huge thank you to everyone who gamely ignored wet grass, mud and a cool and gloomy day last Sunday to work on the church grounds. And thanks to Lynn Ruschhaupt for coordinating the landscape efforts. It looks good!
Hail Thee, Festival Day
Next Sunday (May 15th) is the Day of Pentecost, the day when we traditionally wear red to church to symbolize joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. After the Eucharist, we’ll carry the celebration to the undercroft for coffee hour. This year, if you can, please bring some red finger food to share. Think of flames, wind, and doves. Be creative and have fun sharing on this festival day!

The women of the church are having a potluck luncheon this Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 11:30 AM in the undercroft. All are welcome.

Blue Jeans Sunday is This Sunday
This Sunday, May 1, is our spring landscape workday. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually, bring a rake or some clippers (or we’ll have some to borrow) and stay after church for a bit to help prepare the church grounds for spring.
Ascension Day Service – Thursday, May 5
Ascension Day is a major feast day in the church calendar. It always falls 40 days after Easter. Jesus’ ascension will be celebrated with the Holy Eucharist, Thursday, May 5, beginning at 7:00 PM.
Yarn Ministry
The knitting and crocheting group will meet Monday, May 2, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room. This is the last meeting for the season; meetings will resume October 3.
District 161 Fun Run Near St. John’s May 1
The PTO of School District 161 is holding a fun run/walk/stroll Sunday morning, May 1. It begins at Parker Junior High and part of the course passes St. John’s. There will be NO street closures or parking restrictions. Please allow extra time, however, to get to church and be careful of participants who may be in the streets.

Vestry Meeting
The vestry meets Monday, April 18, beginning in the church at 7:00 PM.
Volunteers and Donations Needed for Best Buddies Pet Pantry
Here's an opportunity for a sit-down job with no heavy lifting and delightful co-workers! On Saturday, April 23rd, the Best Buddies coordinator will be dropping off dog treats that have been collected from donation locations throughout the southern suburbs. Our job is to repackage them in individual plastic bags for distribution to south suburban food pantries. We'll meet in the education wing at 10 AM. Let Susan Marquis know if you can help, or if you find yourself on April 23rd with an hour or two to spare, just show up. The donations that we have collected in the food pantry corner near the staircases will be picked up at that time, too. There's room in the collection box for more pet food and supplies!
New Adult Education Opportunity on Sunday Mornings
The adult Sunday School class begins a new course this Sunday, April 17. Using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum the class will study the Scripture readings appointed for that day.

Volunteers and Donations Needed for Best Buddies Pet Pantry
Here's an opportunity for a sit-down job with no heavy lifting and delightful co-workers! On Saturday, April 23rd, the Best Buddies coordinator will be dropping off dog treats that have been collected from donation locations throughout the southern suburbs. Our job is to repackage them in individual plastic bags for distribution to south suburban food pantries. We'll meet in the education wing at 10 AM. Let Susan Marquis know if you can help, or if you find yourself on April 23rd with an hour or two to spare, just show up. The donations that we have collected in the food pantry corner near the staircases will be picked up at that time, too. There's room in the collection box for more pet food and supplies!
New Adult Education Opportunity on Sunday Mornings
The adult Sunday School class begins a new course this Sunday, April 17. Using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum the class will study the Scripture readings appointed for that day.

If you have left over plastic Easter eggs at home, please bring them to the church. We can use them for next year’s Easter egg hunt. A collection box is near the parish office.

Milkweed for Monarchs
Over the past 20 years the monarch butterfly populations has decreased by over 80%, primarily due to lack of habitat, specifically the milkweed plant, which is essential in the monarch life cycle. Several organizations are spearheading efforts to plant milkweed wherever possible. Milkweed seed packets are available in the undercroft. Take as many as you like to plant and share. (More information from the Xerces Society and the Save Our Monarchs Organization.)

The vestry meets Monday, April 20, beginning at 7:00 PM in the church.

Raking for beauty: Let's pitch in after church on 4/19 & help clean up St. John's for spring (garden gloves always fashionable). Baking for hunger: Make your favorite baked treats to sell at coffee hour after church on 4/26. All proceeds to benefit CROP Hunger Walk. More details to follow. High School Youth & Their Parents: Watch the mail for a letter outlining our Youth Group's final activities before the summer break, including details about our upcoming bake sale. Our youth have given so much of their time and talent to benefit others this year... now it's their turn to receive. Our gatherings in May will be entirely for fun and fellowship. Be sure to mark your calendars now for the long-anticipated overnight lock-in on Friday, May 29th!

The concert is at 4:00 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church. Tickets are $15 in advance ($20 at the door) and $10 for students and are available from Bob or Betsy Burgwald.

Palm Sunday This Sunday: Blessing of the Palms and Procession Begins Early
This Sunday is Palm Sunday. The liturgy for blessing the palms will begin at the outdoor altar at 7:55 AM for the early service and at 9:40 AM for the later service.

Children and young people are invited to a special liturgy Saturday, April 4, beginning at 3:00 PM. The event will include a version of the Stations of the Cross, the Liturgy of Light (celebrating the coming of the Easter light), and the raising of the A******* banner. We will also prepare Easter eggs for the Easter egg hunt.

Thanksgiving Services
This year’s community interfaith Thanksgiving service featuring the Viking Choir will be held on Wednesday, November 26, at 7:30 PM at Flossmoor Community Church. Thanksgiving will be celebrated with the Holy Eucharist at St. John’s on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, at 10:00 AM.
Holiday Cookie Walk
If you didn’t get a call asking you to bake your festive cookies or make candies for our Cookie Walk sale on December 6th, please know it was an oversight. We need your help! Our Cookie Walk is famous throughout the community and it helps raise money for outreach and for parish needs. In addition to bakers, a host of volunteers are needed. Please contact Alison Deniston.

A few families still need to be adopted! Look for information in the undercroft. Pick up date is December 5.

Daughters of the King encourages you to give checks or gift cards (from places such as Best Buy, Target, Jewel-Osco, iTunes, movie theaters, restaurants, and Chicago attractions). Please give the checks and gift cards to Iris Bestow by December 7.

Please wear your gardening clothes, bring a rake or clippers, and stay after church this Sunday, June 29, to help with landscape work. Everything is growing well and we would like the grounds to look their best for the July 4th Ice Cream Social.
The Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Friday, July 4. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.; we begin serving around 10:15 a.m. Our clowns, Skiddles and Strawberry will be twisting balloons into all sorts of fun shapes. Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks. Hot dogs and cookies are available for purchase. (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)

The Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Friday, July 4. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.; we begin serving around 10:15 a.m. Our clowns, Skiddles and Strawberry will be twisting balloons into all sorts of fun shapes. Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks. Hot dogs and cookies are available for purchase. (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)

Uplifting Update
At its June meeting, the vestry approved construction drawings for the installation of a vertical lift just off of the west foyer. The drawings and other information on the accessibility project are available in the undercroft.

Please wear your gardening clothes, bring a rake or clippers, and stay after church next Sunday, June 29, to help with landscape work. Everything is growing well and we would like the grounds to look their best for the July 4th Ice Cream Social.
The Fourth of July is Almost Here!
Every year individuals and families from the broader Flossmoor community attend St. John’s Fourth of July Ice Cream Social. We always offer special entertainment for kids. This year our balloon twisting clowns, Skiddles and Strawberry, will be back. We seek donations from parishioners to help defray the costs of providing this entertainment. You can help us offer this event to the community. Look for red, white and blue donation envelopes around the church. You may place your donation in the offering plate or drop it off at the parish office.

The first book that the Practicing Our Faith Book Club will be discussing in the fall is T.H. Luhrmann’s When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical Relationship with God. From the introduction: “So how, in the face of doubt and uncertainty, does God become real for someone? Particularly in our modern . . . American society, with all its exposure to scientific explanation, where the supernatural is often treated as entertaining fantasy, how does someone become confident that there is a supernatural God present in the everyday world? How does a living God become real to modern people?” We welcome you to join the discussion of this book on September 18th.
