Reservations Requested by Monday for the Fifth Annual Lenten Fish Fry
A sign-up sheet will be at the back of the church this Sunday and in the undercroft during coffee hour. The fish fry is coming Friday, March 8, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Once again Smiley Tillman will be providing entertainment. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit PADS. Mark your calendars and invite your friends! You may also call the parish office by Monday, March 4, to make a reservation.

Loaves and Fishes Next Sunday
Next Sunday, March 10, Loaves and Fishes will serve brunch in the undercroft following the 10:00 a.m. service. Everyone is invited. The entrée will be provided. Please bring a dessert or side if you can.

The yarn ministry will meet this coming Monday, March 4, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room.

Wednesday Evening Classes for Lent
Pastor Orr is offering an adult class for Lent on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the church. “Heaven: Who, What, When, Where, How.” You may attend any or all of the classes. This week the class will explore the question of “who”-- different perspectives on the process of salvation.

Singers Go British on March 3
On Sunday, March 3, at 4 p.m., the Grande Prairie Singers present "On This Island: Music of the British Isles." Venue is Faith UP Church in Park Forest; tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Enjoy the music of Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. Truly fab are songs from those four Lads from Liverpool. This Sunday The annual meeting of the parish will be held this Sunday, January 20, following the 10:00 a.m. service. All parishioners are encouraged to attend. The 2012 annual report will be available at the meeting.

In conjunction with the annual parish meeting, Loaves and Fishes will be serving Sloppy Joe’s for lunch this Sunday, January 20. Both beef and turkey versions will be available. All are invited.

The winter class, using material from the public radio program On Being with Krista Tippett, looks at “Spiritual Heroes, Women and Men on the Frontiers of Faith.” Included are Karen Armstrong, Jimmy Carter, Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Joan Chittester. The youth of Little Hands are spearheading St. John’s participation in the Cathedral Shelter Christmas basket program this year. Look for their table during coffee hour. Or you can stop by the parish office anytime to adopt a family.

Daughters of the King Help Lawrence Hall
Once again the Daughters of the King will be coordinating the St. John the Evangelist Church Wish List Drive for the children, youth and families at Lawrence Hall Youth Services. Every holiday season they care for nearly 1,000 children and families. Gift cards from Target, grocery stores, book or music stores, clothing stores or cash or checks (made out to Lawrence Hall Youth Services) would all be appreciated. December 14 is the deadline. You may give your donation to Iris Bestow or any Daughter of the King.

Blue Jeans Sundays in November

Wonderful Holiday Concert December 9
The Grande Prairie Singers open their 2012-13 concert season at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, Faith UP Church in Park Forest, with “Winterlude.” It features Pergolesi's Magnificat, “Ave Maria” by both Bruckner and Rachmaninoff, and holiday favorites such as “Let It Snow” and “White Christmas.” Tickets are $15 in advance; $20 at the door; and $10 for students. • A Plea for Yarn
  A plea for yarn donations for a group of elderly Japanese women from the tsunami ravaged fishing village of Shichigahamo, Japan. The yarn ministry group at St. John’s will be collecting yarn, new or partial skeins, knitting needles and crochet hooks for the next six weeks to send to the Yarn Alive Club in Japan. The article from the Wall Street Journal regarding the plea for yarn will be on display in the undercroft, along with a container for your donations through April 29th. • Holy Family Organ Recital Next Sunday
  The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family will host a special organ recital next Sunday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m., followed by Choral Evensong, to honor the Annunciation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All in attendance are invited to stay afterward for a casual potluck dinner in the Parish Hall. There is no charge, but goodwill offerings will be accepted. So, if you’ve never heard Holy Family’s magnificent pipe organ, why not give your ears this simple auditory treat.

  The South Suburban InterFaith Job Search Network is hosting a special workshop next Tuesday, March 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at B'nai Yehuda Beth Shalom in Homewood. Entitled “From Hiring to Hired,” the program will be led by Faith Newman, Assistant Director of Human Resources at Olivet Nazarene University in Rolling Meadows.   Experience Celtic spirituality through the work and personality of its greatest advocate, St. Patrick. • Treasurer’s Report Available
  The full annual report on the life of the parish will be available at the Annual Meeting. The treasurer’s report is available this Sunday. Look for copies in all the usual places.
  
  
• Adult Class: Exploring the Catechism
  The Living Faithfully adult class has just begun a new class. The class is appropriate for both life-long Episcopalians and newcomers as well, and you can join it at any time. What does it mean to be created in the image of God? Who is the Holy Spirit? What does the Episcopal Church really teach about the Sacraments? The class will be both lecture and discussion. Please bring your Bible. It meets in Classroom 4 in the Education Wing beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays.
  
  
• Youth Worship: New Sunday Offering
  A new children’s worship opportunity is being offered on Sunday mornings during the first part of the 10:00 service. Youth worship is intended primarily for children aged Kindergarten through Third Grade. Older children will occasionally fill leadership rolls. Youth Worship begins at 10:00 a.m. in the Education Wing. For more information, check with Tracie Moxley or Pastor Orr.
  
  
• Gardeners: Free clay pots available
  The clay pots left over from the Christmas poinsettias are available free to anyone who would like to take them. Look in the west foyer near the food donation baskets.

  The annual community Thanksgiving service, hosted by the South Suburban Ministerial Association, will be Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church. As usual, the Viking choir will perform. This year Pastor Orr is the preacher.
  
  
• Little Hands Advent Project
  Little Hands, St. John’s children’s outreach ministry, will meet next Sunday, November 20, from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Undercroft for our annual pastoral inreach project. We will make Advent cards and gifts for people who are not able to regularly attend church.
  
  
• “Blue Jeans” Sunday: November 20

• Buy a Christmas tree and support Homewood schools!
  Foundation 153 is a local non-profit that raises money to fund innovative projects in Homewood's elementary schools. This year they are holding a holiday tree sale during Homewood's Holiday Lights Festival on December 2nd. Premium 6-7' Fraser Firs from Michigan will be sold from 3:00 - 9:00 pm in the Hickory Road parking lot (NW corner of Hickory and Dixie Highway). Select your tree and we will assist you with loading it onto your vehicle. Prices: $50 when pre-ordered by November 28th, $60 when purchased after November 28th. Explore displays on the many ministries and activities that are a part of the life of our parish community. Everybody is invited!

  Children’s Sunday School Registration takes place at the Jubilation. Look for the Sunday School table. Next Sunday, children of all ages are invited to meet in the Atrium during the 9:00 education hour to help create this year’s children’s murals.

  The South Suburban Interfaith Job Search Network, of which St. John’s is a member, will host a “Federal Job Search Seminar” led by John F. Costello. Even in this difficult economic climate, the federal government remains a relatively reliable employer. Mr. Costello has led over 800 seminars helping job seekers secure federal employment. The event will also provide suggestions for improving resumes. It takes place this Wednesday, September 14, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Community House at Flossmoor Community Church (2218 Hutchison).

• Illinois Philharmonic Rising Star Showcase
  The Friends of the IPO present the third annual Rising Star Showcase on April 17 (Palm Sunday) at 4:00 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church. The benefit concert for the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will feature seven talented musicians from the Southland, ages 8 – 18, playing violin, viola, piano, clarinet, and trombone. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from Donica Van Voorhees or directly through the IPO.

• Little Hands Meets Next Sunday, November 21

• Thanks to all those seafood lovers in you!
  The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is pleased to report that its “Brother Al Kromer Memorial Lobsterfest IV” on Nov. 6 was a rousing success. In the end, 180 tasty Maine crustaceans were purchased, enough to raise (after expenses) $2,122 for charity, to be shared among Episcopal Relief & Development, Children's Oncology Services Inc., the Good Shepherd Center, South Suburban PADS, and the Rich Township Food Pantry. In particular, the Brotherhood is indebted not only to the parish, but also to members Bob Dehn, Bill Bestow, Bob Berner, Ted Stone, Bill Sole, Bob d'Olivieria, Sam Otoo, Mark Moxley and Rob McManamy for their many contributions last Friday and Saturday. Also, June Fidanza of the Good Shepherd Center deserves special mention in appreciation of her tireless efforts to promote Lobsterfest beforehand and then to see it through to the bitter end, i.e. cleanup! Finally, thanks also to Marilyn Kromer for lending her guiding support to help us do justice to Brother Al's memory.
  
  
• Thanksgiving Services
  The annual community interfaith Thanksgiving service with the Viking choir will be held Wednesday, November 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Anshe Sholom, 20820 Western Avenue in Olympia Fields. St. John’s Thanksgiving celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be Thursday morning, November 25, at 10:00 a.m.

  The “kitchen genie”, on behalf of the whole church, would like to thank all the Sunday Coffee Hour hosts, and all the many other folks who use our church kitchen, for helping maintain it so well. Every Sunday morning John or Patti Huntoon picks up delicious sweet rolls at the Highway Bakery in Chicago Heights and we bless them for that caring deed. Longtime president Rob McManamy and lifelong secretary Bob Dehn are both stepping down, so new officers need to be elected and a new course set for the Brotherhood at St. John's. • More Mayfair Thanks... this time for our generous donors
  In this space last week, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew thanked all those who physically made this month’s ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner a reality. This week, we thank those parishioners who helped ensure the event’s financial success by donating specialty cakes, artwork and myriad other items for our auction, which ultimately raised some $2,600 for distribution to our designated charities. • Sign up Now for the Second Annual Jackie Campbell Memorial Blood Drive
  Once again, in conjunction with the parish picnic, a blood drive will be held at St. John’s on Sunday, June 6. The blood drive is organized in memory of parishioner Jackie Campbell who died in the spring of 2009. Jackie joyfully served and participated in the life of the parish for 33 years. In her final day of life she required massive infusions of blood. We honor her by giving the gift of life to others. • Pentecost, May 23
  Next Sunday, May 23, is Pentecost. There is a long-time, informal tradition for people to wear red to church on Pentecost. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red, signifying the “tongues, as of fire” that alighted upon the disciples. It is also a traditional date for baptisms and we will be baptizing two new Christians at the 10:00 a.m. service.
  
  
• ‘Mayfair’ Magic Recaptured; Moms to Benefit
  More than 80 parishioners and guests filled the undercroft and Guild Room last Saturday evening for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s annual ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner, which ultimately raised more than $3,200. Falling on the eve of Mothers’ Day, this year’s event placed a special emphasis on mothers, targeting at least half of its proceeds to St. Mary’s Episcopal Adoption Services and Maternity Counseling, which provided the night’s guest speaker, Ms. Jan Lynch, a St. Mary’s board member and adoptive parent. The balance will go to Episcopal Relief & Development, which also helps moms and their families around the world. While individual ‘Mayfair’ donors will be thanked individually and formally in the days ahead, the Brotherhood does want to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who gave so generously of their time, not to mention energy and sweat, all of which proved necessary to pull off this rewarding event. Specifically, ‘Mayfair 2010’ is indebted to the brawn and legwork of Margi & Jack Strombeck; Sue & Bob Berner; Iris & Bill Bestow; Cynthia Turnquest; Mark Moxley; Anna Alsman; Ted Stone; Stewart Scott; Alex Fullam; Leighton Whittaker; and Dee, Elliot & Glynnis McManamy. • Faith in Films; Bonhoeffer, March 12
  The movie Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace (2000) tells the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young Lutheran pastor who opposed the Nazi regime from its beginnings. That opposition cost him his life. The movie begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room on Friday, March 12. Popcorn is provided. Everyone is invited.
  
  
• Lenten Soup and Study on Wednesdays
  The Lenten study series on C. S. Lewis’ book The Screwtape Letters continues on Wednesday evenings. Soup is offered in the undercroft at 6:00 p.m. No need to sign up for soup; just come. Class begins in the church at 7:00 p.m.
  
  
• Ecumenical Lenten Worship Services
  Tuesdays during Lent the South Suburban Ministerial Association will offer services of prayer and reflection on the “I am” statements of Christ. Various local ministers offer the reflections. The services begin at 12:10 a.m. at Homewood Presbyterian Church (17929 Gottschalk Ave). Lunch follows.
