The Center for Independence Through Conductive Education

The Vestry of St. John’s has begun a preliminary conversation with The Center for Independence Through Conductive Education, a 501 C-3 non-profit corporation dedicated to helping people with motor disorders. This includes people of all ages with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy and other motor dysfunction like stroke victims. This past summer the Center offered a 4 week “summer camp” for the first time in the Homewood / Flossmoor area. As a result, these preliminary conversations began after The Center for Independence approached St. John’s as they began looking for a location in the area that would best fit their needs. We would like our members to join us in exploring whether or not this program would be a good fit for St. John’s and our outreach within our greater community. We look forward to having more conversations about the Center for Independence Through Conductive Education in the coming months. Practicing Our Faith Book Club

This month the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is reading Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor, a collection of short stories written in the final decade of her life. The book club will meet on Thursday, November 16 at 7:00pm in the Guild Room to discuss the book. New members are always welcome!

Respond Now

The Daughters of the King are collecting personal items for the men and women that receive assistance through Respond Now. Suggestions: soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, etc. Both full and travel-size are needed.

Halloween Candy

Please donate your individually wrapped leftover Halloween candy for residents of the Manteno Veterans’ Home. There is a collection box between the staircases, and the collection will continue through Wednesday, November 15^th.

Christmas Basket Program

St. John’s is once again participating in the ReVive Center for Housing and Healing’s Christmas Basket Program. We are asking parishioners and church organizations to please volunteer and sponsor a family to provide them with a merry and memorable Christmas. Sign-up sheets and family packets are available in the undercroft. This year’s deadline for dropping off the Christmas Baskets at St. John’s will be no later than Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

NOV. 12 - Annual SWIFT Inter-Faith Mixer/Dinner in Orland Park

Meet, greet and break bread with open-hearted members of other faiths next month at the annual SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT) dinner, Sunday, November 12, at Faith United Methodist Church in Orland Park. The traditional format of this fun event is to seat fellow SWIFT members at each table from all three Abrahamic faiths. The simple idea is to help promote dialogue and fellowship in a casual and communal setting ("Mohammed, please pass the butter?"). The Church is located at 151^st St & 80^th Ave., and doors open at 5:30 pm. The dinner runs from 6 pm—8 pm and tickets are $20 apiece. Parish Dinner Groups

Sign up for the 2018 Parish Dinner Groups continues through Sunday, November 12, 2017. Information and forms for signing up will be found on a table in the undercroft. Please join us even if you are not a “couple” or you can’t host a dinner in your home. If you have any questions regarding this unique opportunity to get to know your fellow parishioners a little bit better, please talk to Gale Michael.

Bible Study/Fellowship Group

This Bible study group will meet at members' houses for a pot luck dinner and fellowship once a month. Kids are welcome! The first meeting will be in January. If you are interested in joining, please contact Mary VanSwol, and state whether you prefer Saturday or Sunday from 5-7 pm. An official time will be announced closer to the date.

Wednesday Update

The Wednesday Eucharists meet at 9 a.m. Then, at 10 a.m., Fr. Mike will lead a weekly bible study class. This is an all-parish class for both men and women. If you can, please bring your own NRSV bible, but don’t worry if you forget or don’t have one.

Small Group Surveys

Please take a few minutes and fill out the small group availability form located in the Sunday leaflet.  Each small group will last for approximately 90 minutes. You can place the form in the offering plate or give it to a search committee member.

FINALLY! “Faith + Science” // Interfaith Forum // Sept 17, 3 pm, Frankfort

This Sunday, Sept. 17, Episcopal Rev. Clayton Thomason, medical ethics director at Rush University Medical Center, will offer a Christian take on "Faith + Science" at the latest SWIFT Interfaith Forum. He will be joined onstage by Dr. Zaher Sahloul, a pulmonologist at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and Dr. Carol Gerson, an ENT specialist and assistant professor at Northwestern University. The free event will take place from 3-6 pm, at the St. Francis Woods Campus in Frankfort IL (9201 W St Francis Rd). Refreshments will be served, but please bring a non-perishable food item for Respond Now. We Need Your Feedback!  

The Search Committee is asking that everyone complete the Church Assessment Tool, or CAT.  This survey is designed to tell us who we are as a parish and who we want to be going forward as we search for our new rector.  If you are 16 and over and consider St. John's your church home, please go online and take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StJohnEvangelistIL.  Hard copies are also available if you'd prefer.  The next phase of research will be small group discussions and all ages are encouraged to participate.  More information to come.

Got Freshmen?

Let us know who they are!  Let's send our young adults away at college for the first time a surprise "care package." Consider bringing in simple, fun items, or a note of encouragement to let our fellow parishioners (or relatives/friends) know we are thinking of them and wishing them success in their new life phase.  And when we say "simple", we mean simple:  a pack of gum, deck of cards, refrigerator magnet, pencils, stickers, candy, etc (the Dollar Store would be the perfect place to shop).  Anything, really--use your imagination!  We will have labeled boxes in the undercroft during coffee hour over the next few weeks; toss in your contributions (so far, we have a list of four freshmen).  If you know a college freshman you want to receive a St. John's care package, please call/text either Mike Madden or Dee McManamy--or see them at church. We'll need your freshman's full mailing address.  Each package will be a collective gift from the Church of St. John--yet another way to say we are, indeed, One Body--even when we are away from one another.

Search Committee

The vestry has prayerfully chosen and approved the search committee for our new rector. Tracie Moxley and Donna Blackburn will serve as co-chairs. Bill Bestow, Glynis Keene, Jayne Goode, Tom Senesac, Eric Turnquest, Anne Edwards, and Stuart Creason will serve on the committee with them. We will commission the search committee at our worship services on Sunday, July 30^th.

The Vestry wishes to thank everyone who expressed an interest to serve on the search committee. Even though you may not have been selected to serve on the committee, we will be reaching out to everyone, especially the youth of our church, to be involved in this process.  Please continue to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide them in this process.

We would like to continue the tradition of having pictures of life at St. John's, but we need everyone's help!  Whenever you see a good photo opportunity at St. John's (special event, holidays, good hair day), please pull out your phone or camera, take some pictures and email them to Anne Edwards.  Anne manages the FaceBook page for the parish, so she will either post them or save them for the Parish.  And, if you haven't already, please like "St. John the Evangelist, Flossmoor."

Thank You from Pastor Orr

My deepest thanks are for the privilege of sharing so many experiences of your lives and spiritual journeys.  Thank you also for the many heartfelt notes.  A huge thank you to everyone who was a part of the farewell brunch:  the planners and workers, the senior wardens, and everyone who attended.  (To everyone who took photos, I’d love to see them!)  And, finally, thank you for the generous purse.  I pray for God’s presence and guidance with you all, as individuals and as a parish, as you journey forward.  –Kristin+

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social                                                                                 

St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Monday, July 4.  The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.; we begin serving around 10:15 a.m.  Skiddles and Twistina will be twisting balloons into all sorts of fun shapes.  Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks.  Hot dogs will be available for purchase.  (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)

Intercessory Prayer

Wednesday Bible Study Class
St. John's Wednesday bible study class is on hiatus for the summer, but we will be joining Holy Family's rector and parishioners for a study of Isaiah on Tuesdays from 6:30 PM until approximately 8:00 PM at Holy Family in Park Forest. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Looking Ahead: Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
July 4th is only two weeks away. St. John’s Ice Cream Social is our gift to the people, young and old, of Flossmoor. Financial contributions are needed to help cover the cost of the children’s entertainment and many volunteers are needed to run the event. Contact Gale Michael to volunteer. Look for the red, white and blue donation envelopes around the church.

Farewell Brunch
The Vestry looks forward to seeing everybody at the farewell brunch for Kristin on Sunday, June 18, which is her final Sunday with us. Festivities will take place in the undercroft after the 10 AM service. Please make certain to turn in your RSVP, notify Betsy or any Vestry member by tomorrow, June 12, so we have an accurate headcount. BUT even if you haven’t responded, please join us. All are welcome.

Wednesday Bible Study Class

Ice Cream Social
We’re gearing up for the St. John’s Annual Community Ice Cream Social scheduled for Tuesday, July 4th. Skiddles and Twistina will entertain us with their balloon creations. We will have ice cream, cold drinks, and hot dogs. All of this happens immediately following the 10 a.m. Flossmoor Children’s Parade and runs through about 12:15 p.m. Your participation is what makes this event a success. Are you able to bring in some wildflowers or flowers from your garden? Can you put up flyers around town? Can you help move tables and tents outside? Can you meet and greet our guests? Can you scoop ice cream or cut watermelon on July 3rd? Do you have a card table or two that we can borrow? How about (and this is for everyone) praying for glorious weather? Recycle Plastic Easter Eggs
If you have now empty plastic Easter eggs left over from St. John’s Easter egg hunt or others, you may bring them to St. John’s to be used next year. A collection box is near the parish office.

Blue Jean Sunday Next Week, May 7
Wear gardening clothes, bring your rake and help beautify St. John’s landscape for spring. Following the 10:00 AM service next Sunday, May 7.

Yarn Ministry
The knitting and crocheting group will meet Monday, May 1st at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room. This is the last meeting, until we start up again in the fall.

St. John’s Joins Interfaith Group 
At its April meeting, St. John’s vestry voted to join the SouthWest InterFaith Team (SWIFT), the 15-year-old area group that promotes meaningful dialogue and joint community service among the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. St. John's becomes the 15th faith community to join the group, which includes churches, synagogues, and mosques. Of note, we are also the first Episcopal church ever to join SWIFT. Looking ahead, each congregation designates two representatives to help steer SWIFT planning and events. Rob McManamy and Bryan Burke will be St. John’s liaisons. The pair already attended SWIFT's annual planning retreat last Sunday in Frankfort, and will have more info to share soon. Children’s Easter Egg Hunt
Following the 10:00 AM service, all children of the parish are invited to participate in an Easter egg hunt on the front lawn of the church. Bring your own baskets.

Sunday School On Vacation

SWIFT co-founder Khalid Mozaffar will be giving an ‘Islam 101’ presentation at the American Islamic Association, 8860 W Saint Francis Rd, Frankfort from 10am to 12pm on Sat., April 22. All interested members of St. John's have been invited to the AIA for what should be a fascinating talk. For more details or to RSVP please contact Rob McManamy by no later than Wednesday, April 19.

Palm Sunday This Sunday – April 9: Come Early for the Procession
The liturgy of the palms begins before each service this week. We will gather at the outdoor altar at 7:55 AM before the early service and at 9:40 AM before the later service. Come be a part of the triumphal procession!

Sign Up for the Watch
A sign up sheet is available in the back of the church for the watch in the garden beginning the evening of Maundy Thursday, April 13, and continuing through noon on Good Friday.

Sunday School On Vacation
Sunday School for all ages is on vacation this Sunday, April 9 and next Sunday, Easter Sunday.

Help Prepare Easter Eggs
During coffee hour after the 10:00 AM service, everyone is invited to help fill Easter eggs to be used in the children’s Easter egg hunt on Easter morning. The hunt takes place on the front lawn of the church following the 10:00 AM service on Easter.

Worship During Holy Week
The schedule for Holy Week worship services was included with the Easter letter. Copies are also available at the church on the information tables.

Contribute to Easter Flowers
Please consider making a contribution towards the lilies and other flowers that will adorn the church at Easter time. Contributions may be made in memory or thanksgiving or simply to the Glory of God. Flower contribution envelopes were included with this week’s Easter letter; they are also available in the pews.

Fish Fry Success
The St. Barnabas Men's Fellowship of St. John's and Holy Family will hold its regular monthly breakfast meeting this Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 AM at St. John's in Flossmoor. Last Friday, the group hosted yet another successful ‘Episcopal Fish Fry’ for the community, serving some 130 customers and raising $1,000 for the South Suburban PADS homeless ministry. Special thanks to all who turned out, as well as to the volunteers. Lastly, thanks also to the Smiley Tillmon Band for once again making this fundraiser the catch of the season!

Supply Priest
We welcome the Rev. Sam Portaro back to St. John’s this Sunday. Before he retired he served as chaplain to Brent House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Chicago.

Lent Adult Study Series
This year the Lenten study series is titled “Cloud of Witnesses.” It will explore some of the lesser- known saints that are remembered in the Episcopal Church. Classes begin at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evenings in the church. Next week’s class will be on scientist saints.

Lent Fish Fry – March 31
Save the Date! The St. Barnabas Men’s Fellowship of St. John’s and Holy Family will sponsor their annual Lent Fish Fry on Friday, March 31. Watch for flyers with all the details.

“Hoorah for Handel!” is the next Grande Prairie Singers concert, held at 4 PM, Sunday, March 12, Trinity Lutheran Church, 6850 W 159th St., Tinley Park. On Sunday, March 26, the Singers will be part of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra's Rodgers & Hammerstein concert at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights (phone 800.838.3006 for tickets). Finally, $5 raffle tickets are available (1st prize, $1,000) from the Singers for the May 21st drawing (winners need not be present). We are asked by the church to observe the season of Lent not only in our worship, but throughout our daily lives. A handout, “Lent for Dummies,” with suggestions for observing Lent is available on the information tables and HERE. Several booklets with daily devotions are also available.

Wednesday Adult Lent Study Series Begins March 8
This year the Rector’s Adult Study Series will be on the “The Cloud of Witnesses,” a closer look at some of the lesser known saints in the church calendar. Classes meet on Wednesday evenings in the church, beginning at 7:00 PM.
