Palm Sunday This Sunday – April 9: Come Early for the Procession
The liturgy of the palms begins before each service this week. We will gather at the outdoor altar at 7:55 AM before the early service and at 9:40 AM before the later service. Come be a part of the triumphal procession!
Sign Up for the Watch
A sign up sheet is available in the back of the church for the watch in the garden beginning the evening of Maundy Thursday, April 13, and continuing through noon on Good Friday.
Sunday School On Vacation
Sunday School for all ages is on vacation this Sunday, April 9 and next Sunday, Easter Sunday.
Help Prepare Easter Eggs
During coffee hour after the 10:00 AM service, everyone is invited to help fill Easter eggs to be used in the children’s Easter egg hunt on Easter morning. The hunt takes place on the front lawn of the church following the 10:00 AM service on Easter.
Worship During Holy Week
The schedule for Holy Week worship services was included with the Easter letter. Copies are also available at the church on the information tables.
Contribute to Easter Flowers
Please consider making a contribution towards the lilies and other flowers that will adorn the church at Easter time. Contributions may be made in memory or thanksgiving or simply to the Glory of God. Flower contribution envelopes were included with this week’s Easter letter; they are also available in the pews.
Fish Fry Success
The St. Barnabas Men's Fellowship of St. John's and Holy Family will hold its regular monthly breakfast meeting this Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 AM at St. John's in Flossmoor. Last Friday, the group hosted yet another successful ‘Episcopal Fish Fry’ for the community, serving some 130 customers and raising $1,000 for the South Suburban PADS homeless ministry. Special thanks to all who turned out, as well as to the volunteers. Lastly, thanks also to the Smiley Tillmon Band for once again making this fundraiser the catch of the season!
Interfaith Presentation for South Side Churches in Frankfort, April 22
SWIFT co-founder Khalid Mozaffar will be giving an ‘Islam 101’ presentation at the American Islamic Association, 8860 W Saint Francis Rd, Frankfort from 10am to 12pm on Sat., April 22. All interested members of St. John's have been invited to the AIA for what should be a fascinating talk. For more details or to RSVP please contact Rob McManamy no later than Wednesday, April 19.

The St. Barnabas Men’s Fellowship of St. John’s and Holy Family will sponsor their annual Lent Fish Fry on Friday, March 31. Serving will be from 5:30 – 7:30 PM with live entertainment again this year by Smiley Tilmon. Tickets are $12/adults, $5/kids. We welcome the Rev. Sam Portaro back to St. John’s this Sunday. Before he retired he served as chaplain to Brent House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Chicago.

SWIFT will be hosting a speakers forum titled “You Believe in Angels?: Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Perspectives” from 3:00PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 19 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 1885 Riegel Road, Homewood. Also that weekend, SWIFT co-founder Khalid Mozaffar will present “Islam 101” on Saturday, March 18 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the American Islamic Association, 8860 W. St. Francis Rd, Frankfort. For more details or questions about either of these events, please contact Rob McManamy.

“Hoorah for Handel!” is the next Grande Prairie Singers concert, held at 4 PM, Sunday, March 12, Trinity Lutheran Church, 6850 W 159th St., Tinley Park. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for students with ID. On Sunday, March 26, the Singers will be part of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra's Rodgers & Hammerstein concert at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights (phone 800.838.3006 for tickets). Finally, $5 raffle tickets are available (1st prize, $1,000) from the Singers for the May 21st drawing (winners need not be present). Her last day in the office is February 12. Please welcome our new office manager, Diane Pugh, who lives with her husband, Ralph, and her son, Daniel, in Homewood. She formerly worked as the Preservation Manager for the American Theological Library Association, based in downtown Chicago. She feels God has led her here, and is excited to begin using her skills and strengths for the benefit of the parish.

We are still collecting winter clothing articles for people in need. Please keep this in mind as you are cleaning out your closets. Donations of hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children are welcome. Coats and jackets are particularly needed, as well as socks. Donated items, if not new, should be clean and only gently used. Collection bins are located in the undercroft and at the office entrance. There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft as well. Deposit items in any of the containers. The next collection date is January 31st.

Easter is very early this year! The traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake supper will be Tuesday, February 9, from 5 PM – 7 PM. Ash Wednesday services are February 10 at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM and 7 PM.
At the recent annual meeting, the following slate was elected to serve on the vestry: Senior Warden: Anne Edwards, Junior Warden: Steve Hofer, Vestry Members (3 year terms): Alice Creason, Randy Oyster and Zoltan Sziky. No Longer Collecting Plastic Grocery Bags
A big thank you to everyone who brought in plastic grocery bags! We are not looking for additional donations at this time, but those that have been collected will be sorted by the youth group and used to produce mats for individuals who are homeless.

A litany is a form of prayer in which the people make fixed responses to a series of short biddings or intercessions. They are an ancient liturgical tradition, often said or sung in procession. The Great Litany is the first liturgical rite published in English. Developed by Thomas Cranmer, it was published in 1544. The first English Book of Common Prayer was published in 1549.

Dent Davidson is Coming to the Lent Study Series: Enriching our Worship
The Lent study series continues on Wednesday evenings during Lent. Classes meet from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church. This week Dent Davidson, Associate for Arts and Liturgy with the Diocese of Chicago, will lead a sing-along on alternative versions of the service music (the portions of the prayer book liturgy that the congregation often sings). The theme throughout these classes is the deepening and strengthening of our encounter with God through worship.

Once again this year the Brotherhood of St. Andrew is offering a traditional Lenten Friday fish fry on April 4, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Smiley Tillmon will be back to perform the blues during the dinner. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Please call the parish office at 708-798-4150 by April 1 to reserve your place. If you can help out as a volunteer (both men and women), please be in touch with Bill Bestow.
Learn About Episcopal Summer Camp this Sunday
Did you know that the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago offers a summer camp program for kids? In 2014 three different one-week programs will be offered, open to kids ages 7 – 17. Deacon Mike Bond will be at St. John’s during coffee hour this Sunday, March 30, with information on camp. In addition, for those who are interested, he will offer a short presentation around 11:30 in classroom 4. You can also read more about camp here.

Teen Youth Group
The teen group will meet on Sunday, March 23, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Our group will be planning future meetings that will include our participation in the upcoming Crop Walk and shopping for McAllister Nursing Home. We will be working on Easter cards for local nursing facilities (please bring scissors). Please bring your friends. Snacks will be provided.

Lenten Fish Fry – April 4
Once again this year the Brotherhood of St. Andrew is offering a traditional Lenten Friday fish fry on April 4, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Smiley Tillmon will be back to perform the blues during the dinner. Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Please call the parish office at 708-798-4150 by April 1 to reserve your place.

Did you know that the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago offers a summer camp program for kids? In 2014 three different one-week programs will be offered, open to kids ages 7 – 17. Deacon Mike Bond will be at St. John’s during coffee hour next Sunday, March 30, with information on camp. You can also read more about it here.
Lenten Taizé Service at IJP
Infant Jesus of Prague is offering a Lenten Taizé service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 3. All are invited. IJP is located at 1131 Douglas (at Flossmoor Road) in Flossmoor.
Outreach Forum Coming to St. John’s
On the four Sundays following Easter the Sunday morning adult education class will be devoted to presentations by several outreach ministries. Already confirmed are Respond Now, St. John’s Community Garden, and the Night Ministry. Watch for more details.
The teen group will meet on Sunday, March 23, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Our group will be planning future meetings that will include our participation in the upcoming Crop Walk and shopping for McAllister Nursing Home. We will be working on Easter cards for local nursing facilities (please bring scissors). Please bring your friends. Snacks will be provided.
Vicki Garvey is Coming to the Lent Study Series: Enriching our Worship
The Lent study series takes place on Wednesday evenings during Lent. Classes meet from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church. This week Vicki Garvey, Associate for Lifelong Christian Formation with the Diocese of Chicago, will present a session on making the Prayers of the People actually be the prayers of the people. The theme throughout these classes is the deepening and strengthening of our encounter with God through worship.

The vestry meets Monday, March 17, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the church.
The Observance of a Holy Lent
The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday. “Lent for Dummies,” a guide to the observance of Lent, is available on the information tables. Various resources for daily prayer and reflection are also available. It’s not too late to take up a Lenten discipline.
Lent Study Series: Enriching our Worship
The Lent study series takes place on Wednesday evenings during Lent. Classes meet from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church. A flyer with more information on this year’s class is available on the information tables. This week’s class will look at expansive language and imagery in the Eucharist. Underlying all of the classes will be the study of how and why we worship as a community.
Loaves and Fishes This Sunday, March 16
Everyone is invited to brunch this Sunday, March 16, following the 10:00 a.m. service. The main dish is ham. If you can, bring a side dish. All are welcome; please come!

Lent Study Series: Enriching our Worship
The Lent study series begins Wednesday evening, March 12. Classes meet from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church. A flyer with more information on this year’s class is available on the information tables. Dent Davidson and Vicky Garvey from the Diocesan staff will lead two of the sessions as we explore many of the supplemental liturgical materials available for our common worship. Underlying all of the classes will be the study of how and why we worship as a community.
Daylight Saving Time Begins This Sunday
This Sunday, March 9, remember to set your clocks one hour forward.
High School Youth Group Meets This Sunday
The high school youth group will meet this Sunday, March 9, from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Wear comfortable clothes for physical activity. As always, your friends are welcome. Questions? Call or text Dee McManamy. Yes, there will be snacks.
