From the Vestry: This Week’s Pledge Update
Thanks to those who turned in their pledge to St. John's during this busy time of expectation. The pledges that came in this week brings us to a total of $172,718. Again, our total estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000. It is still possible to turn in a pledge card, call or email the Parish office with a pledge amount for 2017. Christmas Pageant Orientation Meeting This Sunday
The annual children’s Christmas Pageant is part of the 4:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. All children who would like to participate the pageant and their parents are asked to attend a brief organizational meeting in the church after the 10:00 service this Sunday. If you would like to be in the pageant, but cannot make the meeting please text (708.651.1389) or email (peshuntoon@yahoo.com) Pat Smith-Huntoon by Sunday afternoon.
Practicing Our Faith Book Club
The Practicing Our Faith Book Club is meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7pm in the Guild Room to discuss The Name of God is Mercy by Pope Francis. New members are always welcome!

The Bloom Township food pantry holds a Christmas party for their clients each year. Dale from Best Buddies Pet Pantry attends with dog and cat toys and invites the kids to choose a toy to give their pets for Christmas. If you can donate a new toy, please drop it off in the Best Buddies collection box by the staircases. Of course pet food donations are always welcome as well. Our next re-packaging work day at St. John's is on December 10th at 10 AM, so that's when the toys and food will be picked up. Thanks for your support!

I would just like to provide a friendly reminder to those still considering a pledge to St. John’s. As of Thursday, the amount pledged increased to $161,868. Again our total estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000. It is still possible to turn in a pledge card, or call or email the Parish office with a pledge amount for 2017. Thank you and bless you to everyone who so generously (and promptly!) participated in this year’s Christmas Basket program. 37 boxes of gifts are on their way to ReVive Center for Housing and Healing for distribution to seniors and families this Christmas.
St. John’s Fall UTO Ingathering
St. John’s fall ingathering for the United Thank Offering raised $523.32. This money has been forwarded to the Diocesan ECW to be used towards UTO grants. The UTO call to thankfulness is ongoing. Please continue to use your blue boxes. Another ingathering will be held in the spring.

Please join us--it's a fun activity and really brings on the Christmas Spirit in a remarkably short time--little more than an hour. Perfect for those who need service hours! Make Advent Wreaths This Sunday
It is a rich experience to keep the Advent season at home. We will have materials to make Advent wreaths and suggestions for other Advent activities in the undercroft this Sunday at 9:00 AM.
Holiday Cookie Walk – Next Saturday, December 3
Please bring your baked goods to the church any time Friday, December 2. Volunteers are always needed Friday and Saturday. Contact Alison Deniston if you can help, even just for an hour or two.

Our estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000, to keep everything going in the way it has been. The Vestry will vote on your 2017 budget in early January, and the budget will be determined by the pledges received before the end of this year. Thanksgiving Worship Services
The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at St. John’s on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, beginning at 10:00 AM. The community interfaith Thanksgiving service is Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 7:30 PM at the Parish of St. Joseph, 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
Annual Pledge Campaign
If you have not yet turned in your pledge card please return it to the parish office as soon as possible.

St. John’s annual cookie walk is a local community tradition and an important fundraiser both for outreach and the parish. To succeed, everyone needs to bake! Volunteers are also needed. Call the parish office or contact Alison Deniston for more information.

Provide gifts this Christmas for a senior or family with limited financial means. Information is available in the undercroft. Wrapped and boxed gifts are due in the parish office by November 30.

Blessing of the Animals: This Sunday, October 2
All pets and their human companions are invited to the blessing of the animals this Sunday, October 2, beginning at 4:30 PM at the outdoor altar. Bring a photo if you’d prefer a proxy blessing. Toy animals are also welcome. As usual, we will pray for dear pets who have died. The traditional contests, including the highly coveted Owner-Pet Look Alike Contest, will also be offered.
Best Buddies Pet Pantry Volunteer Day Rescheduled
Approximately every six weeks, volunteers from St. John’s gather to package dog food, dog treats, or cat food for distribution through the Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the work day scheduled for this Saturday, October 1, has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 15.
United Thank Offering Information
The United Thank Offering was begun in 1889 by the Women’s Auxiliary to the Board of Mission of the Episcopal Church. Every penny contributed goes to grants that support the mission and outreach projects of the church. Handouts with more information about UTO are located on the information tables. We will organize an “ingathering” of St. John’s contributions for sometime in early November so that our contributions can be offered and combined with others presented at Diocesan Convention.
Visit the Holy Land with Bishop Lee
Bishop Jeffrey Lee and the Very Rev. Dominic Barrington, Dean of St. James Cathedral, will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land May 9-20, 2017. Participation in the trip is open; a deposit is due by October 31. Read more HERE.

The knitting and crocheting group will meet this Monday, October 3, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room.
Vegetable Abundance
No delivery this week. Still a few jalapenos from last week.

The Rev. Stacy Alan, Chaplain at Brent House, the Episcopal chaplaincy at the University of Chicago, will be at St. John’s this Sunday.
Help Local School Kids Start School in the Fall
The Daughters of the King are once again coordinating the collection of school supplies for Respond Now. This year they are particularly requesting that we provide spiral notebooks, folders and backpacks. They will be assembling the backpacks early, so all donations must be in to St. John’s by Wednesday, July 20. Look for a collection box in the west foyer.

Can you spare an hour this Saturday, July 16th? We need your help to package pet food for Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Local community food pantries will distribute the packaged food to their clients who need a little extra help in order to keep and feed their pets. It can make the difference between keeping their canine or feline best buddies at home or having to surrender them to shelters. This is an easy ministry for all ages. Please help on the 16th at 10 AM in the education wing.

Bishop Edmond Lee Browning, who served from 1986 - 1997 as the 24th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, died July 11. His obituary is HERE.

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Ice Cream Social by scooping ice cream, cutting watermelon, setting up tents and tables, arranging flowers, making and pouring lemonade and iced tea, serving ice cream, lemonade and iced tea, grilling hotdogs, selling food, overseeing the children’s table, helping the balloon ladies, greeting the community, attending, cleaning up, donating to the entertainment and most importantly praying for good weather. This event would not work as well if all of you didn’t support it. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Help Local School Kids Start School in the Fall
The Daughters of the King are once again coordinating the collection of school supplies for Respond Now. This year they are particularly requesting that we provide spiral notebooks, folders and backpacks. They will be assembling the backpacks early, so all donations must be in to St. John’s by Wednesday, July 20. Look for a collection box in the west foyer.
Volunteer to Help Pets
Can you spare an hour on Saturday, July 16th? We need your help to package pet food for Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Local community food pantries will distribute the packaged food to their clients who need a little extra help in order to keep and feed their pets. It can make the difference between keeping their canine or feline best buddies at home or having to surrender them to shelters. This is an easy ministry for all ages. Please help on the 16th at 10 AM in the education wing.
Wednesday Service: Morning Prayer
This Wednesday, July 13, the 9:00 AM service on Wednesday will be Morning Prayer. The Holy Eucharist will resume August 3.

This week: Fennel, cucumbers, zucchini.

Announcements for May 29
Seeking Information on Graduates: Last Call
Are you, or someone in your family, graduating this spring? As we do each year, we would like to celebrate graduates (at all levels). Please call (708.798.4150) or email (office@stjohnsflossmoor.org) the parish office with the information. You may also drop a note in the offering plate on Sunday. Please keep the announcements as brief as possible, but feel free to include information on majors, special honors and future plans, if known. The deadline for submitting information is June 1.
Parish Office Closed Monday
The parish office will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.
Vestry News
At the May 16th meeting of the vestry, we discussed our “Godparent” project. Each vestry member is the godparent for a ministry in the parish. Godparents don’t necessarily become members, but keep up on what is happening, pray and show concern for that ministry, and tell other people in the parish about it. We also discussed ongoing plans for expanding the columbarium and improving the sidewalk and landscaping by the outdoor altar. Since there are currently funds to cover this project, it should start in late summer.
Help Out with Best Buddies Pet Pantry
Can you spare an hour on Saturday, June 4th, to weigh and package dry cat food for the Best Buddies Pet Pantry? We’ll meet at 10:00 AM in the adult education classroom, and if we get lots of helping hands, we should be done in no time. Please let Susan Marquis know if you can be there, and bring along friends if you can. Last minute helpers are appreciated, too!

Sunday school classes for children and adults are on vacation for the summer. Thanks to all who participated, especially the teachers of the children’s and youth classes: Diane Walsh-Madden, Patti Pohrte and Cyndie Knoll.

Volunteers and Donations Needed for Best Buddies Pet Pantry
Here's an opportunity for a sit-down job with no heavy lifting and delightful co-workers! On Saturday, April 23rd, the Best Buddies coordinator will be dropping off dog treats that have been collected from donation locations throughout the southern suburbs. Our job is to repackage them in individual plastic bags for distribution to south suburban food pantries. We'll meet in the education wing at 10 AM. Let Susan Marquis know if you can help, or if you find yourself on April 23rd with an hour or two to spare, just show up. The donations that we have collected in the food pantry corner near the staircases will be picked up at that time, too. There's room in the collection box for more pet food and supplies!
New Adult Education Opportunity on Sunday Mornings
The adult Sunday School class begins a new course this Sunday, April 17. Using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum the class will study the Scripture readings appointed for that day.
Blue Jeans Sunday – May 1
May 1 is our spring landscape workday. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually, bring a rake or some clippers (or we’ll have some to borrow) and stay after church for a bit to help prepare the church grounds for spring.
Bishop Montgomery Being Honored
St. Augustine College will honor The Rt. Rev. James W. Montgomery at its annual El Puente Awards Gala April 28. More information about this event is posted in the undercroft.
Grande Prairie Singers Times Three
Enjoy and support the Grande Prairie Singers any of three ways! On Sunday, May 15, they present a cabaret-style concert at 4:00 pm at Freedom Hall in Park Forest. A fundraiser is on for Sunday, May 22, at Grape & Grain in Homewood. And they're selling raffle tickets. See Bob or Betsy Burgwald for details or tickets.

Ash Wednesday Services
Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 10. The Holy Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes will be offered at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM, and 7:00 PM.
Shrove Tuesday: Pancake Feast and Burial of the Alleluia
The traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake supper will be held Tuesday, February 9, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children. All proceeds will benefit the youth group outreach projects. And all children of the parish are invited to come help decorate and bury the Alleluia banner for Lent.
The Observance of a Holy Lent
Guidelines for observing Lent (“Lent for Dummies”) and various resources are available on the information tables.
Lent Study Series
This year the Rector’s study series for Lent will explore the use of the Psalms in worship. Classes are Wednesday evenings, beginning February 17 at 7:00 PM.
Youth Group Resumes This Sunday, 4:00 PM
Welcome back from an extended break… just in time for Lent! We’ll take a positive spin on this traditionally dreary church season and see how beautifully we emerge at Easter. Bring a friend. Super-quick service activity. Super-simple planning for a spring party with IJP and Flossmoor Community Church youth. Plus something super-goofy. And all done long before the Super Bowl begins. Preguntas? Dee McManamy or Margi Strombeck.
Thank You from Pets and Their Families
Do our hands still smell like dog treats? Last Saturday, eight volunteers spent a couple of hours at St. John’s packaging treats for dogs whose families are registered at various south suburban township food pantries. The Best Buddies Pet Pantry program provides extra pet food assistance in order to keep pets in homes and out of shelters. Many thanks to our volunteers who did the packaging and to those who donated items over the past couple of months. Now the collection box is empty. When you bring in donations for the Rich Township food pantry, please consider bringing in dog or cat food. You can drop it off in the BBPP box next to the Rich Township baskets. Thank you!

We thank you all very much for your HUGE support of the warm clothing collections we had this winter for PADS and Respond Now. With your and God’s help, we were able to keep many people in need warm this winter.

Fall Pledge Campaign
If you have not already done so, please turn in your pledge cards as soon as possible. You may place them in the alms basins on Sunday or mail them to the parish office.
The Holiday Cookie Walk is Coming Soon: Bake and Bring Your Cookies!
The annual holiday cookie walk is Saturday, December 5, from 9 – 11:30 AM. Please bring your cookies to the church on Friday, December 4, anytime between 9 AM and 7 PM. Questions? Call Alison Deniston.
Make Your Own Advent Wreath
Keeping Advent at home with simple prayers and an Advent wreath is the best way to prepare for Christmas. Information and materials to construct an Advent wreath will be available in the undercroft during the 9:00 AM hour on Sunday morning. Please stop by.
Best Buddies Pet Pantry
What will some elderly people do when they don’t have enough to eat for themselves and for their only companions, who often are their pets? They share, of course, but then no one gets enough. Next to the food pantry collection baskets there is a collection box for the Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Please donate pet food and treats to help food pantry clients and their best buddies get the food they need.
Yarn Ministry still needs the congregation’s assistance
We will be collecting some winter clothing articles for the PADS Ministry. Donations of hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children. PADS is also accepting coats and socks for all their people in need. Donated items, if not new, should be clean and gently used. We urgently request all the crocheters, knitters, and shoppers in the parish, to please help the Yarn Ministry make this another very successful project. Collections bins are located in the undercroft and at the office entrance. There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft, as well. Deposit items in any of the containers, Thank you.
ReVive (Cathedral Shelter) Christmas Baskets Drop Off
Wrapped and packaged gifts need to be dropped at the parish office BEFORE 9:00 AM, Friday, December 4.
Handel’s Messiah
Illiana Oratorio Society is pleased to announce its performance of Handel's Messiah which will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2015. It will be held at First Christian Reformed Church of South Holland (16248 South Park Ave, South Holland, IL) at 2p.m. This year's soloists will feature: Elaine DeYoung, Maria Bouwhamp-Luttjeboer, Jack Cotterell, and Douglas Anderson. All are welcome to attend!
