Fleece Blanket Donation

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center provides fleece blankets to all children with whom they conduct sensitive interviews.  At this time they are running out of blankets.  We will be putting together blankets on Monday, February 25th at 6:30pm in the undercroft.  If you are planning to help assemble the blankets please bring a sharp scissors and a ruler. We will be working with the fleece that was donated and if anyone had fleece purchased for this project we would appreciate your bringing it that evening.   Please contact Marilyn Kromer, Bev Keene, or Shirley Reilly with any questions.  Thank you.

Respond Now Needs Men’s Gloves!

Respond Now is asking for St. John’s help in collecting men’s gloves for this winter season. Any winter articles would be appreciated (hats, scarves, gloves, coats), but they have completely run out of men’s gloves to give out. Donations can be placed in the boxes at the top of the stairs to the undercroft.

Newcomer’s Reception – Friday, February 16^th at the Rectory, 5:00 p.m.

St. John’s Table – Sunday, February 24^th at 5:00 p.m.

The early church worshipped around the table, around a meal that we have ritualized into the modern mass. Join us as we reclaim an ancient form of worship, as we gather around the table and together seek the spirit’s movement in our own time and in our own community. Come to the Table!

Lector Training

There will be a Lector training session right after the 10 a.m. mass on Sunday, February 24. It shouldn’t last much more than 15 minutes. We have had a lot of changes and all lectors need to be informed of the tweaks in the ‘choreography.’ If you didn’t make the one last Saturday, please plan to attend this one. If you can’t make it, or no longer want to be a lector, please let me know. Thanks. Bill Moser.

TV Needed

The new Resource Room needs a 55-to-65-inch flat-screen television that can be mounted on the wall. It should have the capacity to connect to a laptop in order to run videos and Power Point presentations. Do you have such a TV in good condition that you can donate, or are you interested in donating a new one? If so, please contact Fr. Jeremy.

 “Recognizing Hate,” Event in Homewood

The SouthWest Interfaith Team (SWIFT), of which St. John’s is a member, was invited to attend an event put on by the South Suburban Housing Center concerning hate crimes, how to recognize them, and how to address them. The event will be at the Irwin Community Center in Homewood on Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 6pm to 8pm. If you have any questions please talk to or email Bryan Burke.

SWIFT Speakers’ Forum, March 17 at St. John’s

St. John’s will be hosting the South West Interfaith Team’s (SWIFT) Spring Speakers’ Forum on Sunday, March 17. The topic is “Environmental Stewardship in Our Faiths” and will feature a Christian, Jewish, and Muslim speaker who will present the perspective of each faith on our responsibility to God’s creation. Registration starts at 2:30pm with the forum running from 3:00pm to 5:00pm with a Q&A following that. Those who cannot stay for the Q&A are free to not attend. There will be snacks and light refreshments throughout. If you have any questions please talk to or email Bryan Burke or Rob McManamy.

Daughters of the King meeting Saturday 9:30-11:00am in the Guild Room.

All women of the Parish are welcome.  We will be discussing our Lenten activities and planning for the Diocesan Meeting onApril 6th.  We will also continue with the study: The Quest; An Excursion Toward Intimacy with God.

Fundraising Coupon Booklets

The Vestry is supporting a new easy and fun product to sell as a fundraising campaign for St. John’s. We are selling fundraising coupon books for $20.00 from a company called Simple Qpons. The books allow individuals to save money with things like buy-one-get-one-free and 50% off discounts at tons of our favorite local merchants. There are two editions of the book: one for Northwest Indiana and one for Southland Chicago. You can contact Vestry members or the church office to either purchase books yourself  OR to help in selling books for this fundraiser.

Painting with Friends

You don’t have to be able to draw a straight line because we won’t ask you to. Mark your calendars to join St. John’s Paint Party from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 27 in the Undercroft. Shirley Reilly and Bill Moser will guide you through the steps to create your own painting. The class size is limited, and reservation deadline is Jan. 20. The cost is $40, and all materials will be supplied. Call Gale Michael, Shirley Reilly, or Bill Moser.

Adult Server Training

There will be a training/refresher for Greeters and Ushers on Saturday, February 2^nd  from 9:00-11:00 am. This is a combined training as both ministries work together at the beginning of the service. Please plan on attending and notify Pat Smith-Huntoon if you are unable to attend and need to set up an alternative time. Additionally, there will be training for Lectors immediately following at 11:00 am. Contact Bill Moser for more information.

18^th Annual Episcopal Men’s Pre-Lenten Retreat – Letting Faith Find You

The Annual Retreat will take place from Friday, February 8^th – Saturday, February 9^th at the Dekoven Center (600 21^st Street, Racine, Wisconsin). The Rev. Christopher Powell has agreed to serve as the Retreat Leader, where attendees will have opportunities to participate in small- and large-group discussions on important issues, as well as share fellowship with other men in worship. Flyers with additional information and registration forms will be available in the undercroft. Do not wait to register! Available spots are on a “first come, first registered” basis, and the registration post mark date will be used to determine if room is available.

2018-2019 Directory

A new edition of the directory is underway, and a draft has been placed in the back of the church. This Sunday, please look at the information we have listed for you (the entry under your name as well as birthdays/anniversaries, and if you are listed as a contact for a group) and verify that everything is correct. If you need to update anything, take a pen and correct it right in the directory. Any written changes noted will be changed in the master copy of the directory before copies are made.

Who Has Church Keys?

Also located in the back of the church will be a sort of sign-up sheet for anyone who has been given a church key. If you currently have a key, please write your name down (first and last name). We’ve never kept a record of how many people have keys, and it is good practice that we start doing so for insurance purposes. Thank you in advance for helping us out with that.

Interfaith Dinner, November 18^th

The South West Interfaith Team (SWIFT) will be having its annual interfaith dinner at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Homewood on Sunday, November 18 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There will be lots of food and great conversation. Tickets are $20 and must be bought ahead of time. If you are interested please talk to Rob McManamy or Bryan Burke. 

All Souls Day — Friday, November 2^nd at 7:00 pm.

This Sunday, please bring photographs and/or mementos of loved ones who have passed away for us to include in our Shrine of Remembrance for this All Saints Day, which will remain up through the month of November. You can give them to Fr. Jeremy or drop them by the church office. Also, please send to the church email your list of names that you would like to be remembered in the All Souls bulletin.

Don't Throw Away Your Halloween Candy

Again this year we will be collecting left-over (or specially purchased) Halloween candy for the Manteno Veterans' Home. The facility serves up to 294 veterans with medical and special needs issues. The residents are provided with meals but not with extras, so candy is a real treat for them -- especially the fun-sized candy bars. You may donate opened bags of candy as long as the candy pieces are individually wrapped. There will be a donation box in the food collection area between the two staircases. The collection will continue through Sunday, November 11th, which, appropriately, is Veterans' Day.

Only 7 Spots Left to Help Feed the World! 

Join other St. John volunteers on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2:00 - 4:00 pm, as we pack nutritious meals for the world's malnourished children.  We will caravan from church (approx 1:00 pm) to the packing facility for Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in Aurora, IL, where we--along with over 200 other volunteers--will assemble and pack meals for shipment to the hungry.  It's fun fellowship with like-minded folks, it's perfect for chalking up service hours, and it is quite literally life-saving, soulful work.  Can't join us?  PLEASE consider donating money to cover the cost of the meals we will pack!  Each volunteer will pack $50 worth of food which translates to 216 meals!  Our goal is to raise $750...that's 3,240 meals. Make checks payable to Church of St. John with FMSC on the memo line.  Want to know more about FMSC?  Check out this amazing Christian organization at http://www.fmsc.org. If you want to go with us and help pack meals, please email Dee McManamy. There are jobs for everyone and for every ability from age 5 yrs upward. Need to sit while working? Center for Independence Meeting Dates

There will be an open meeting between Fr. Mike, the Vestry and the congregation to discuss space utilization and the possibility of the Center for Independence through Conductive Education occupying space at St, John.

Respond Now

The Daughters of the King are collecting personal items for the men and women that receive assistance through Respond Now. Suggestions: soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, etc. Both full and travel-size are needed.

Vestry Nominating Committee

The Vestry has approved Cynthia Turnquest, Alice Creason , and Shirley Reilly to serve as the nominating committee for our new 2018 Vestry members.

Bible Study/Fellowship Group

This Bible study group will meet at members' houses for a pot luck dinner and fellowship once a month. Kids are welcome! The first meeting will take place Saturday, January 20^th at 5 p.m. at the VanSwol residence. Contact Mary VanSwol if you are interested in attending.

Outdoor Altar Tiles

Parishioners or visitors can still donate and receive an original outdoor altar tile from around the Columbarium. For more information, feel free to contact Steve Hofer if you are interested. Available tiles are still on display down in the undercroft.

2018 Annual Meeting

Well, it almost that “Favorite Time of the Year” for Episcopalians---THE ANNUAL MEETING. This year our Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday January 21, 2018, after the 10 am Eucharist. As we prepare, there will be a couple of changes that we want to make you aware. It has been my custom, on the day of the Annual Meeting, to replace the Sermon with the Rector’s Address. In addition, this year we will not print all the various reports from committees and ministries. The reason for this is to save trees; we are trying to be good Stewards of God’s Creation. We will publish and post them. If any of the heads of committees and ministries wish to, they can deliver a verbal report. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at any time.

Ice Cream Social

A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Ice Cream Social by scooping ice cream, cutting watermelon, setting up tents and tables, arranging flowers, making and pouring lemonade and iced tea, serving ice cream, lemonade and iced tea, grilling hotdogs, selling food, helping the balloon ladies, greeting the community, attending, cleaning up, donating to the entertainment and most importantly praying for good weather.  The weather was glorious and attendance was good. This event would not work as well if all of you didn’t support it. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Introducing New Office Manager: Betsy Sloan
Betsy has lived in Flossmoor for the past eight years with her husband, Dan and daughters Lucy (a senior at HF) and Eleanor (an 8th grader at Parker Junior high). She has spent most of her working life as an administrative assistant at various levels at DePaul University. She looks forward to getting to know and working with the parishioners of St. John’s.

Choir Returns This Sunday
Following their summer break, the choir returns to participation in the 10:00 AM service this Sunday.

Practicing Our Faith Book Club
This month the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is reading Jabbok by Kee Sloan, a novel about a friendship between a white boy and an African-American preacher in rural Mississippi. The book club will meet on Thursday, October 20 at 7:00pm in the Guild Room to discuss Jabbok. New members are always welcome.

Organist Michael Soto in Concert
Michael will be performing with the Southwest Symphony in an upcoming concert. He’ll be playing Handel’s Concerto for Organ HWV 295, “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale,” and Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 for organ and orchestra. The concert is on Sunday, September 25 at 4:00 in Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W College Drive, Palos Heights. Information and tickets are available at www.southwestsymphony.com.

New Outreach Opportunity for Teens and Adults
Only have a little time to spare but you care about making a big difference? All hands, all minds, all ages invited to join in service. Look for St. John's new outreach ministry at this Sunday's Jubilation. We've listened to our high school teens and this is what they've told us: We are busy with academics, sports, clubs and jobs; the pressure can be intense. You also manage to carve out time for church and want to do good works. This last part makes you very special and--in today's world, sadly--a rarity. Our diocese has learned this the hard way, which has led to a significantly reduced diocesan youth program, including the elimination of decades-old programs like Happening. That's why St. John's wants to meet the challenge and support your commitment to our parish and your own spiritual growth. Here's the idea... each quarter we'll put forth at least one service project that parishioners of all ages and interests can join in. No regularly scheduled "meetings". Just projects and dates and details. You choose the ones you are able to do (and suggest your own ideas). We'll invite other Flossmoor churches to join us. Involve your friends, family, neighbors--whatever makes it fun and meaningful for you, and in the process, we'll help heal the world. God loves it when we do that.

As the vestry Godparent to the PADS Group of St. John’s, I would like to ask the congregation to pray for their coming season, starting this October. PADS is a ministry that reaches beyond the doors of St. John the Evangelist into the community in need... Answering the call of Jesus. --Ted Stone

UTO Blue Boxes
Beginning in the 1880’s women of the Episcopal Church have coordinated the United Thank Offering. Central to the UTO are the familiar blue boxes. Pick one up from the information tables and take it home. Every time you are thankful or mindful of a blessing in your life, put a coin or two in the box. Collections from throughout the Episcopal Church are gathered together and grants are made to help people in need and support the mission of the church. Thank You to Landscape Workers
A huge thank you to everyone who gamely ignored wet grass, mud and a cool and gloomy day last Sunday to work on the church grounds. And thanks to Lynn Ruschhaupt for coordinating the landscape efforts. It looks good!

Hail Thee, Festival Day
Next Sunday (May 15th) is the Day of Pentecost, the day when we traditionally wear red to church to symbolize joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. After the Eucharist, we’ll carry the celebration to the undercroft for coffee hour. This year, if you can, please bring some red finger food to share. Think of flames, wind, and doves. Be creative and have fun sharing on this festival day!

ECW Luncheon
The women of the church are having a potluck luncheon this Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 11:30 AM in the undercroft. All are welcome.

Recyclepalooza, Saturday, May 14
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Parker Jr. High School Parking Lot, 2810 School Street, Flossmoor. Items to recycle include: Bikes, ink jets, American flags, pop tabs, magazines, hotel shampoos, plastic bags, plastic wrap, clothes, reusable bags, coats, sporting goods, cell phones, eyeglasses, electronics and more. Special Recycling Fee for TV’s @ $20/set.

Diocesan Confirmation Service at St. James Cathedral 
Young people from St. John’s will be among those confirmed by Bishop Lee at the Spring Diocesan Confirmation Service, Saturday, May 21, 11:00 AM at St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron St. in Chicago. It is a glorious service; everyone is invited to attend.

Grande Prairie Singers Times Three
Enjoy and support the Grande Prairie Singers any of three ways! On Sunday, May 15, they present a cabaret-style concert at 4:00 pm at Freedom Hall in Park Forest. A fundraiser is on for Sunday, May 22, at Grape & Grain in Homewood. And they're selling raffle tickets. See Bob or Betsy Burgwald for details or tickets.

The Jubilation, our fall program kick-off and celebration of the life and ministry of the people of St. John’s, will be held next Sunday, September 13, following the 10:00 AM service. Seeking Delegates for Diocesan Convention
This year’s annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago will be held November 20 & 21 at the Westin Lombard. This year’s keynote speaker is the Rev. Becca Stevens, founder of Thistle Farms-Magdalene, a community of women who have survived prostitution, trafficking and addiction. Everyone is welcome to attend convention. If you are interested in serving as a delegate or alternate from St. John’s to the business sessions, please let Pastor Orr know by September 20.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
The traditional Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is Tuesday, February 17, beginning at 5:00 PM. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under, available at the door. Come enjoy pre-Lenten pancakes, bacon and sausage.

Calling All Kids: Help Bury the Alleluia
Another pre-Lenten tradition is the burying of the Alleluia (since we don’t say “Alleluia” during Lent). All children of the parish are specially invited to the pancake supper to help decorate and bury this year’s Alleluia.

Ash Wednesday Services
The imposition of ashes with Holy Communion will be offered at 6:30 AM, 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM on Ash Wednesday, February 18.

The Observance of a Holy Lent
Materials are available to help you observe the holy season of Lent. Look for the “Lent for Dummies” handout with information and suggestions. Several booklets and guides for daily reflection and devotion are also available on the information tables.

Wednesday Evening Class for Lent
This year the Wednesday evening Lenten class will study The Last Week: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’s Last Days in Jerusalem by Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. The class will include presentations of the material in the book along with discussion. If you wish to read the material before class, please acquire your own copy of the book. Classes begin February 25 and meet in the church from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

Jubilation and Fall Ministry Fair – Next Sunday, September 7
The activities of our annual fall kick-off Sunday will be September 7, following the 10:00 am service. Brunch will be served. You can browse displays of many activities and ministries that are a part of our parish life. Sunday School registration will be held. And it is a good chance to catch up with friends after the summer. Everyone is invited!

Seeking All Bowlers
A Sunday afternoon church bowling league is looking for new bowlers. If you are an experienced bowler or just learning, come and have fun with us. Bowling is every other Sunday afternoon from September 14 – April 26, 2015, at Lynwood Bowl. Check out the flyers on the table in the undercroft or see Gale Michael for more information.

Sunday School Begins September 14 
The Sunday School year begins Sunday, September 14, with the annual “painting of the window” in the Atrium. Regular classes for children and adults begin the following Sunday, September 21.

Seeking Delegates for Diocesan Convention
The annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago will be held November 21 – 22 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center. If you are interested in representing St. John’s at convention, please speak to the Rector.

Parish Office Hours
The parish office will be closed Monday, September 1, to commemorate Labor Day. Tuesday, September 2, regular (non-summer) office hours resume. The office will be open Monday through Friday, 9 am – 1 pm.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Shrove Tuesday is this Tuesday, March 4. The traditional pancake supper begins at 5:00 p.m. and continues until we run out of bacon! Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12, available at the door.

Calling All Kids: Come Help Bury the Alleluia
All children of the parish are especially invited to the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper to participate in the burying of the Alleluia. A Lenten church tradition, a festive alleluia banner is “buried” or hidden for the duration of Lent. It is then brought forth for the celebration of Easter.

Ash Wednesday Services: March 5
Ash Wednesday services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. All services will include Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.

The Observance of a Holy Lent
The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. “Lent for Dummies,” a guide to the observance of Lent, is available on the information tables. Various resources for daily prayer and reflection are also available.

Lent Study Series: Enriching our Worship
The Lent study series begins Wednesday evening, March 12. Classes meet from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the church. A flyer with more information on this year’s class is available on the information tables. Dent Davidson and Vicky Garvey from the Diocesan staff will lead two of the sessions as we explore many of the supplemental liturgical materials available for our common worship. Underlying all of the classes will be the study of how and why we worship as a community.

Yarn Ministry
The yarn ministry meets Monday, March 3, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Guild Room.

Painters and Painting Supplies Needed This Sunday
The choir is spearheading a project to paint the choir room this Sunday, March 2, beginning around 1:00 p.m. Additional painters are welcome! If you can’t help paint, can you lend drop cloths, rollers or paint trays? Just bring them to the choir room on Sunday. All identifiable supplies will, of course, be returned.

Gospel Concert March 9
 Grande Prairie Singers present “I Remember When the Stars Fell,” featuring music of the era of slavery in our country, 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 9, at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest. All Souls Day Service – Saturday, November 2
The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (also known as All Souls Day) developed—as sort of an extension of All Saints Day—as a day on which the Church remembers that vast body of the faithful who may be unknown in the wider fellowship of the church but are no less members of the company of the redeemed, particularly family members and friends. This year St. John’s will offer a service on All Souls Day, November 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. You are invited to bring a small photo or memento of any individual you wish to remember at this service. These will be displayed during the service. You may also still submit names to be remembered in the prayers of the All Souls Day service by calling or e-mailing the parish office.

St. John’s Jubilation – September 8: Brunch, Ministry Fair, and Sunday School Registration
St. John’s annual fall ministry fair and Sunday School registration takes place following the 10:00 a.m. service this Sunday, September 8. Loaves and Fishes will be serving lunch. Everyone is invited to come and browse opportunities for study and ministry.

What Did You Do This Summer?
Everyone, young and old, is invited to bring in a photo or flyer or (pinnable) memento from your summer activities and pin it on the bulletin board in the undercroft. Whether you went to camp or spent time on long-standing interests; had a staycation or an overseas adventure; planted a garden; went to the movies; read War and Peace; or spent time with friends and family; please share your experiences.

Sign Up to Attend the Diocesan Block Party (Revised Announcement)
The newly-renovated St. James Commons is now open for all to enjoy and on September 15 from 3 – 6 p.m. they’re throwing a big block party to celebrate. There will be great music, food trucks, fun for kids and tours of the new diocesan center. Look for light blue flyers with more information. If you register online, you’ll receive a coupon for tickets to the food trucks. The diocese is organizing free bus transportation. Loaves and Fishes Next Sunday
Loaves and Fishes has been moved from this Sunday to next Sunday, March 17. Everyone is invited to a St. Patrick’s Day-themed brunch following the 10:00 service. If you can, bring a dessert or side dish, but even if you’re not able to bring a dish, you are welcome. Please come and join in the fellowship.

Wednesday Evening Classes for Lent
Pastor Orr is offering an adult class for Lent on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the church. “Heaven: Who, What, When, Where, How.” You may still drop in on any of the classes. This week the class will explore the question of “when”—do we experience heaven during this life, or only after death, or not until the end of time?

Take a Stand Against Gun Violence: CROSSwalk
Bishop Lee and a resolution at last year’s Diocesan Convention urge all members of the Diocese of Chicago to become active in efforts to reduce gun violence. These efforts include public witness, political advocacy and support of positive youth programs. CROSSwalk brings these efforts together. This year’s CROSSwalk procession is Friday, March 22, beginning at St. James Commons at 6:00 p.m. More information is available at www.crosswalkchicago.org.

Sign up for the Watch
It is our custom to pray and keep watch over the reserved Sacrament from the evening of Maundy Thursday until the noonday service on Good Friday (March 28-29), just as Jesus asked the disciples to keep watch with him before his crucifixion. If you wish to participate in the watch, a sign up sheet is available in the back of the church. Sign ups are for one-hour segments.
