Cathedral Shelter Christmas Baskets
Thank you to everyone who has signed up to participate in the Christmas basket program. All families and seniors have been adopted, but cash contributions are still needed to support the Little Hands participation. Look for donation envelopes in the undercroft. Pick up date is December 6.

Little Hands Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket Shopping
Children of all ages are invited to participate in the Little Hands outreach ministry. This Sunday, November 24, we will shop for a family in the Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket program. Gather at the church at 3:00 p.m. After shopping we will return to the church to wrap the presents.

Holiday Cookie Walk, December 7
There are many ways to help: Bake, volunteer, shop, or all three! Most of the proceeds go to local outreach and service agencies. For information, be in touch with Alison Deniston.

Blue Jeans Sunday – This Sunday, November 24

Thanksgiving Services
The community interfaith Thanksgiving service (featuring the Viking Choir) will be held Wednesday, November 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Infant Jesus of Prague. St. John’s Thanksgiving celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be Thursday, November 28, at 10:00 a.m.

Advent Wreath Making Sunday, December 1
Come make your own Advent wreath on the First Sunday of Advent, December 1. In the undercroft during the 9:00 education hour. All materials, along with information on Advent, will be provided. (If you already have a ring, bring it.)

Parish Office Closed for Thanksgiving
The parish office will be closed November 28 & 29.

Caroling for Canned Goods: Everyone’s Invited
St. John’s high school youth group invites all of St John’s (plus friends and neighbors of all ages) to join us in “Caroling for Canned Goods” in our parish neighborhood on Sunday, December 8th at 3:30 pm (we’ll meet in the undercroft). Help us help the hungry served by the Rich Township Food Pantry. And what caroling party would be complete without homemade cocoa? Please join us for the fun, and bring a wagon if you have one. “Winterlude 2013,” will feature holiday music of many genres. The concert will be at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 8, at Faith United Protestant Church, Park Forest. Highlights include the Grande Prairie Children's Choir and the Singers' new accompanist, our own Michael Soto! Advance-sale tickets are $15; $20 at the door; $10 for students at all times. Stewardship: Next Sunday is Pledge Sunday
This year you received three pledge cards: one for your pledge of financial support, one to pledge time and talent to programs and ministries at St. John’s, and one to pledge your efforts to outreach ministries. Please prayerfully consider what you can offer. Pledge Sunday is November 24. You may offer your pledge cards during worship on that day or return them to the parish office at any time before November 24.

High School Youth Group
The teen group will meet this Sunday, November 17, at 5:30 p.m. We will be studying the Living Compass curriculum (please bring the books with you). In addition, we will discuss our December service project. Pulled pork sandwiches will be served for dinner. All high school aged teens are welcome. See you Sunday!

Cathedral Shelter Christmas Baskets
Cathedral Shelter is one of the Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of Chicago. It provides a wide range of services to homeless individuals and families and to people struggling with addiction. The Christmas Basket program provides gifts to families and seniors who otherwise would not be able to afford them. Information is available in the undercroft on how you can help by adopting a senior or a family. You may also contribute cash towards the family adopted by Little Hands. Pick up date is December 6.

Whether you live alone or with family, the Advent wreath is a wonderful way to keep the season of Advent at home. Supplies, instructions, and devotions for use with the wreath will be available this Sunday, December 2, during the 9:00 hour in the undercroft. (Bring your own ring if you have one.)

Sunday School Classes Will Not Meet This Sunday

Community Prayer Service
Flossmoor Community Church invites people from throughout our community to come together in a simple service of prayer and music the first Wednesday evening of each month. The next service is Wednesday, December 5, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Community House across the street from Flossmoor Community Church.

Vestry Town Hall Meeting This Sunday: Update on the Accessibility Project
During coffee hour this Sunday, October 21, the vestry will present an update on efforts to improve overall accessibility at St. John’s. All parishioners are urged to come hear about what has been done thus far, to ask questions, and join in the conversation about this important initiative. Youth Worship This Sunday
Youth Worship resumes this Sunday, October 21, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Youth Chapel in the education wing. Children of all ages are always welcome in church throughout the service, but grade school-aged children are invited to participate in youth worship if they wish. It is offered as an engaging age-appropriate worship experience for the liturgy of the Word of God, or the first portion of the Eucharist. Youth worship participants join their families and the parish family at the peace and all share Holy Communion together.

Little Hands Meets Sunday
St. John’s children’s outreach group, Little Hands, meets this Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the undercroft.

All Saints’ Open House at the Rectory
All parishioners and guests are invited to the Rector’s annual All Saints’ Open House at the Rectory, Sunday, November 4, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Parish Dinner Groups

  The Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s Lenten fish fry is Friday, March 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the undercroft. Tickets are $12 for adults; $5 for children; $30 maximum for a family. Take out meals will be available. All profits will benefit PADS. This year’s event will also feature jazz and blues entertainer, Smiley Tillman. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends and neighbors! • A Plea for Yarn
  A plea for yarn donations for a group of elderly Japanese women from the tsunami ravaged fishing village of Shichigahamo, Japan. The yarn ministry group at St. John’s will be collecting yarn, new or partial skeins, knitting needles and crochet hooks for the next six weeks to send to the Yarn Alive Club in Japan. The article from the Wall Street Journal regarding the plea for yarn will be on display in the undercroft, along with a container for your donations through April 29th. • Holy Family Organ Recital Next Sunday
  The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family will host a special organ recital next Sunday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m., followed by Choral Evensong, to honor the Annunciation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary. All in attendance are invited to stay afterward for a casual potluck dinner in the Parish Hall. There is no charge, but goodwill offerings will be accepted. So, if you’ve never heard Holy Family’s magnificent pipe organ, why not give your ears this simple auditory treat.

  The South Suburban InterFaith Job Search Network is hosting a special workshop next Tuesday, March 13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at B'nai Yehuda Beth Shalom in Homewood. Entitled “From Hiring to Hired,” the program will be led by Faith Newman, Assistant Director of Human Resources at Olivet Nazarene University in Rolling Meadows.   Wear work clothes to church this Sunday, November 20, and stay an hour after church to help with fall landscaping work on the parish grounds.
  
  
• Help Provide Clean Water around the World
  This is the last Sunday the Little Hands “Praying Well” will be up in the undercroft. Please offer your prayers and your contributions to help provide clean water wells in areas of need.
  
  
• Make Your Own Advent Wreath
  Next Sunday, November 27, we will have materials available to make Advent wreaths for home use. Come to the undercroft during the 9:00 education hour.
  
  
• Holiday Concert Sunday, December 11
  The Grande Prairie Singers present "A Winter Serenade" at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 11, at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest. The performance opens with J.S. Bach's oratorio Magnificat with soloists and orchestra. The second half includes Schubert's "Ave Maria," "Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head," "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and even Tom Lehrer's "I'm Spending Chanukah in Santa Monica"! Tickets are $20 at the door ($18 in advance); season tickets, $50. But they're available from Betsy Burgwald for the special price of only $10 each.

• Stewardship: Annual Pledge Campaign
  Next Sunday, November 20, is stewardship Sunday. You will have the opportunity to offer your pledge card during worship on that day. You may also return it in worship or to the parish office earlier; but we hope to have all pledge cards in by November 20. Thank you to vestry member R.J. VanSwol, who will share his reflections on stewardship this Sunday.
  
  
• Brunch Bunch This Sunday
  Our annual pre-Thanksgiving Brunch Bunch is this Sunday, November 13, following the 10:00 a.m. service. We will provide the turkey and dressing. Those with last names that begin with A to F bring desserts and those with last names that begin with G to Z bring a side dish. Even if you’re not able to bring a dish, you are invited. We hope you’ll come.
  
  
• Cathedral Shelter Christmas Baskets
  Information on this year’s Cathedral Shelter Christmas basket program is available in the parish office. Both families and seniors are available for adoption.
  
  
• ECW Potluck Luncheon
  The Episcopal Church Women are holding a potluck luncheon this Wednesday, November 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Undercroft.
  
  
• Community Thanksgiving Service
  The annual community Thanksgiving service, hosted by the South Suburban Ministerial Association, will be Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Flossmoor Community Church. As usual, the Viking choir will perform. This year Pastor Orr is the preacher.
  
  
• Little Hands Advent Project
  Little Hands, St. John’s children’s outreach ministry, will meet next Sunday, November 20, from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Undercroft for our annual pastoral inreach project. We will make Advent cards and gifts for people who are not able to regularly attend church.

  Foundation 153 is a local non-profit that raises money to fund innovative projects in Homewood's elementary schools. This year they are holding a holiday tree sale during Homewood's Holiday Lights Festival on December 2nd. Premium 6-7' Fraser Firs from Michigan will be sold from 3:00 - 9:00 pm in the Hickory Road parking lot (NW corner of Hickory and Dixie Highway). Select your tree and we will assist you with loading it onto your vehicle. Prices: $50 when pre-ordered by November 28th, $60 when purchased after November 28th. • Stewardship: Annual Fund Drive
  The annual pledge drive mailing, including pledge cards, has been sent out. You will have the opportunity to formally offer your pledge cards during worship on November 20. They may also be placed in the offering plate or returned to the parish office any time before then.

• Little Hands Work for Clean Water
  In this photo, some of the children who participate in the Little Hands outreach ministry are posing with the model of a well they created. Similar to a wishing well, the well is a “praying” well. Toss in some money and say a prayer for people throughout the world who do not have access to clean water. The money will be sent to the Bishop’s water well project.
  
  
• All Saints Baptisms
  All Saints’ Day, or the Sunday after All Saint’s Day, is one of the times appointed for baptisms in the Episcopal Church. It is a wonderful time to welcome new Christians into the fellowship of saints. Baptism will be offered at St. John’s on Sunday, November 6. Please contact the Rector if you are interested.

  On Wednesday, October 26, 2011, parishioner Dr. Steve Hofer will present “The History of Television” at the South Holland Public Library, 16250 Wausau in South Holland. The presentation will begin at 7 PM and will discuss early mechanical tv, the development of electronic tv, networks and primetime programming. There will be a question and answer session after the presentation. There will be items of display of primetime tv programs from the late 1040’s to current shows. The program is free and open to the public.

• Field Trip to See Saint John’s Bible
  The St. John’s Bible (www.saintjohnsbible.org) is the first illuminated, handwritten Bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in modern times. It is a spectacular work. A portion is currently on display at the Loyola University Museum of Art downtown. Parishioner Steven Russell is coordinating a field trip Thursday, October 20.   St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Monday, July 4. The parade begins at 9:30; we begin serving around 10:00 a.m. Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks. Children’s activities, including balloon twisters will be provided. • Confirmation (Becoming an Episcopalian)
  Confirmation is the opportunity for those baptized as infants to reaffirm their baptismal vows with their own will and voice. It is also an opportunity for those from other denominational backgrounds to join the Episcopal Church. Bishop Scantlebury will be at St. John’s Sunday, June 19, and will offer Confirmation. The church now encourages Confirmation for young people at an older age than in the past. Young adults (ninth grade or older) or adults interested in Confirmation, please contact the Rector as soon as possible.
  
  
• Responding to Tornadoes in the South

• Daughters of the King Install New President
  At the meeting Wednesday, May 4, Janet Irvine was installed as the new president of the Daughters of the King at St. John’s.
  
  
• Faith in Films: Shadowlands
  Faith in Films’ final film of the season will be Shadowlands. The film stars Anthony Hopkins and portrays the life of C. S. Lewis. It illustrates the Easter theme: surprised by joy. • Little Hands Helping Homeless Pets
