From the Vestry: Pledge Update
Yet again this week, more pledges have come in to bring us closer to our estimated 2017 budget of $230,000. This week we have pledges that total $177,918. For anyone who is still considering a pledge, please do so before the end of this month by calling or emailing the Parish office. Contribute to Christmas Decorations
If you would like to contribute to the decorations that adorn the church during Christmas time, please use the flower envelope found in the pews or provided in the Christmas letter. Contributions may be given in memory of a loved one, in celebration or thanksgiving, or simply to the Glory of God.
Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!
That was definitely our theme song as we caroled through St. John’s neighborhood December 11th. The weather didn’t deter our stalwart crew from bringing good cheer to neighbors and gathering canned goods for the Rich Township food pantry. Our efforts hauled in over 80 lbs of food and several cash donations for the pantry. Many thanks to everyone who participated!
Christmas Worship Services
On Christmas Eve, the family service begins at 4:00PM. The “midnight” Christ Mass begins with music at 10:00PM, followed by the Holy Eucharist at 10:30PM. On Christmas Day, the Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. (Although it is a Sunday, there will be no 8:00AM service on Christmas Day.)

From the Vestry: This Week’s Pledge Update
Thanks to those who turned in their pledge to St. John's during this busy time of expectation. The pledges that came in this week brings us to a total of $172,718. Again, our total estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000. It is still possible to turn in a pledge card, call or email the Parish office with a pledge amount for 2017. And yet again (and again and again), thanks to all who give of their time and their funds to our Parish. –Anne Edwards, Senior Warden
Christmas Pageant Orientation Meeting This Sunday
The annual children’s Christmas Pageant is part of the 4:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. All children who would like to participate the pageant and their parents are asked to attend a brief organizational meeting in the church after the 10:00 service this Sunday. If you would like to be in the pageant, but cannot make the meeting please text (708.651.1389) or email (peshuntoon@yahoo.com) Pat Smith-Huntoon by Sunday afternoon.
Practicing Our Faith Book Club
The Practicing Our Faith Book Club is meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7pm in the Guild Room to discuss The Name of God is Mercy by Pope Francis. New members are always welcome!
Best Buddies Pet Pantry Seeks Toys
The Bloom Township food pantry holds a Christmas party for their clients each year. Dale from Best Buddies Pet Pantry attends with dog and cat toys and invites the kids to choose a toy to give their pets for Christmas. If you can donate a new toy, please drop it off in the Best Buddies collection box by the staircases. Of course pet food donations are always welcome as well. Our next re-packaging work day at St. John's is on December 10th at 10 AM, so that's when the toys and food will be picked up. Thanks for your support!

Everyone's invited...bring your friends of all ages! Join church youth in collecting canned goods for Rich Township Food Pantry with our church neighborhood caroling party! Meet in St. J's undercroft at 4pm on December 11th for homemade cocoa (the real McCoy). Bring canned goods to contribute and a wagon, if you have one. Please join us--it's a fun activity and really brings on the Christmas Spirit in a remarkably short time--little more than an hour. Perfect for those who need service hours! Questions or suggestions: Contact Dee McManamy or Margi Strombeck.

Selections include “A Boy Was Born” by Benjamin Britten and John Rutter songs such as “Candlelight Carol” and “Shepherd's Pipe Carol.” Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults ($20 at the door), available from Bob Burgwald or Betsy Elliot.

I would just like to provide a friendly reminder to those still considering a pledge to St. John’s. As of Thursday, the amount pledged increased to $161,868. ReVive Center Christmas Baskets
Thank you and bless you to everyone who so generously (and promptly!) participated in this year’s Christmas Basket program. 37 boxes of gifts are on their way to ReVive Center for Housing and Healing for distribution to seniors and families this Christmas.
St. John’s Fall UTO Ingathering
St. John’s fall ingathering for the United Thank Offering raised $523.32. This money has been forwarded to the Diocesan ECW to be used towards UTO grants. The UTO call to thankfulness is ongoing. Please continue to use your blue boxes. Another ingathering will be held in the spring.

Make Advent Wreaths This Sunday
It is a rich experience to keep the Advent season at home. We will have materials to make Advent wreaths and suggestions for other Advent activities in the undercroft this Sunday at 9:00 AM.
Holiday Cookie Walk – Next Saturday, December 3
Please bring your baked goods to the church any time Friday, December 2. Volunteers are always needed Friday and Saturday. Contact Alison Deniston if you can help, even just for an hour or two.

So far, you have pledged $154,368 towards costs of running our parish, paying our talented clergy and staff, continuing the programs that enrich our lives, and fulfilling our commitment to the Diocese of Chicago. Our estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000, to keep everything going in the way it has been. The Vestry will vote on your 2017 budget in early January, and the budget will be determined by the pledges received before the end of this year. Again, thank you for your pledge, and if you are still prayerfully considering a pledge to St. John's please turn in a pledge card or contact the parish office by phone or email. –Anne Edwards, Senior Warden

Annual Pledge Campaign – Pledge Sunday is This Sunday
You may offer your annual pledge cards this Sunday, November 13, during worship. IF you are unable to do so, please return them to the parish office as soon as possible.
United Thank Offering Ingathering This Sunday
If you have been participating in the United Thank Offering, please bring your offering this Sunday, November 13. You may turn in your filled blue boxes, or if you prefer to write a check, please make it out to St. John the Evangelist and note UTO in the memo line.
ReVive (Cathedral Shelter) Christmas Baskets: Several Families Still Need Adoption!
Provide gifts this Christmas for a senior or family with limited financial means. Information is available in the undercroft. Wrapped and boxed gifts are due in the parish office by November 30.
Parish Kids Shopping Trip for Christmas Baskets
Children and young people of all ages are invited to participate in a shopping trip for a family in the Christmas Basket program. Meet at St. John’s next Sunday, November 20, at 3:00 PM. After shopping we’ll return to the church to wrap the gifts. Please let Pastor Orr know if you can come.

The annual Thanksgiving-themed Loaves and Fishes will follow the 10:00 AM service this Sunday, November 13. Turkey, dressing and mashed potatoes will be served. Bring a side or dessert if you wish. All are welcome!

Plan to help out with the fall landscape clean up day. Wear blue jeans and stay a little while after church to help clean up the church grounds for the winter.

The 179th annual convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago meets next week. Thank you to those who have offered themselves as delegates and alternates representing St. John’s: Sue O’Brien, Shirley Reilly, Steve Hofer, Gale Michael, Doris Sheffer and Don Rubins.

Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. Remember to set your clocks back one hour Saturday night.
All Saints Open House
Pastor Orr will host her annual All Saints Open House at the Rectory this Sunday, November 6, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Parishioners, guests and friends of all ages are welcome.

Annual Pledge Campaign
Fall stewardship materials have been mailed. Please give them careful and prayerful attention. Pledge Sunday is November 13 or you may return your pledge cards any time before then.
Vestry Update
The Vestry met on Monday, October 17. The Columbarium project is ongoing, however construction will not begin until spring. This is due in part by a delay in getting drawings from the landscape architect, and partly due to the fact that many masonry contractors' schedules fill up quickly in the summer and fall. However, we are awaiting bids from a number of companies, and expect the project to go quickly in the spring. The Vestry approved moving the celebration of the Feast of St. John the Evangelist to one week later than it has been in the past. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, January 14, 2017. We hope that the change in date will allow more people to come who might have missed due to travel right after the Holidays.

What started in Tennessee five years ago with just a few dozen people has grown to an effort of more than a million people worldwide, all helping to ease the suffering of homelessness at their local level. How can we help? By donating new socks (tube socks are always a good choice but any type is great) and toiletry items (travel size is perfect). We'll collect items at St. John's through the month of October before delivering our collection to South Suburban PADS. Encourage friends, family and neighbors to get involved. Calling all animal lovers! The November book for the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is Two Dogs and a Parrot: What Our Animal Friends Can Teach Us About Life by Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B. Read the book, and then join us on Nov. 17 at 7pm in the Guild Room for our next meeting. New members are always welcome.

RSVP’s for the Feast Due This Week
Our annual celebration of our parish community, the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, will take place Saturday evening, January 9. The event begins with Evening Prayer commemorating our patron saint and continues with a feast hosted by the vestry. Please RSVP by January 5.
Epiphany Service
The Epiphany, or The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, is one of the principal feast days on the church calendar. It always falls on January 6, after the twelve days of the Christmas season. The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 7:00 PM on January 6.

There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft, as well. Deposit items in any of the containers. The next collection date is January 31.

Children’s Christmas Pageant
The children’s Christmas Pageant is offered as the proclamation of the Gospel during the 4:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. Calling all kids! We will assign parts and read through the script after the 10:00 AM service Sunday, December 13. Additional rehearsals will be after church on December 20 and at 4:00 PM on December 23. Questions? What will some elderly people do when they don’t have enough to eat for themselves and for their only companions, who often are their pets? They share, of course, but then no one gets enough. Next to the food pantry collection baskets there is a collection box for the Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Please donate pet food and treats to help food pantry clients and their best buddies get the food they need.

Once again, after morning prayer and a hearty, marginally healthy breakfast, our own Deacon John Whennen will lead reflections on the week's Gospel and its practical application to current events and our daily lives. This week, we will also discuss community service and the group's role in helping to fill a large ReVive Christmas Basket. As promised, these meetings end promptly at 9 a.m., so you can return to families, recreation and/or duties refreshed and spiritually renewed.

If you have names you would like added to the prayers, please call the parish office. You are also encouraged to bring a memento or ofrenda of someone whose memory you cherish to the service.

Our high school youth invite everyone to gather this Sunday, December 7th, at 3:30 PM in the undercroft for delicious homemade cocoa and caroling for canned goods in St. John’s neighborhood. We’ll bring Christmas cheer to Bruce Avenue residents between Park & Gordon, and they will give us canned goods for the Rich Township Food Pantry. What a great way to make the light of Christ burn brighter. Bring your friends!

Fall Pledge Campaign: Pledge Sunday is November 23
“Count Your Blessings, Share Your Blessings: Celebrate the Experience” is the theme of this year’s pledge campaign. Please share any blessings you have received through your life in this parish on the large banner in the undercroft. Pledge Sunday is November 23.

Practicing Our Faith Book Club
At 7:00 PM next Thursday, November 20th, the book club will meet in the Guild Room to discuss Brian D. McLaren’s A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions That Are Transforming the Faith. Please join us, or maybe you would like to participate in the December 18th meeting. If so, get a copy of Joan Chittester’s Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope, which Chittester describes as “an anatomy of struggle and an account of the way hope grows in us, despite our moments of darkness, regardless of our regular bouts of depression. It is an invitation to look again at the struggles of life in order that we might remember how to recognize new life in our souls the next time our hearts turn again to day.”

This year’s community interfaith Thanksgiving service featuring the Viking Choir will be held on Wednesday, November 26, at 7:30 PM at Flossmoor Community Church. Thanksgiving will be celebrated with the Holy Eucharist at St. John’s on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, at 10:00 AM.
“Count Your Blessings, Share Your Blessings: Celebrate the Experience” is the theme of this year’s pledge campaign. Please share any blessings you have received through your life in this parish on the large banner in the undercroft. Pledge Sunday is November 23.
St. John’s Has a New Website
St. John’s website has been totally redone. Check it out HERE (same address as before – new content). And pick up a new refrigerator magnet with the web address and other contact information on Sunday.
Practicing Our Faith Book Club
At 7:00 PM next Thursday, November 20th, the book club will meet in the Guild Room to discuss Brian D. McLaren’s A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions That Are Transforming the Faith. Please join us, or maybe you would like to participate in the December 18th meeting. If so, get a copy of Joan Chittester’s Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope, which Chittester describes as “an anatomy of struggle and an account of the way hope grows in us, despite our moments of darkness, regardless of our regular bouts of depression. It is an invitation to look again at the struggles of life in order that we might remember how to recognize new life in our souls the next time our hearts turn again to day.”
Cathedral Shelter Christmas Baskets
This program provides gifts, necessities and food to families and seniors who otherwise would not be able to afford them at Christmas time. Information is available in the undercroft on how you can adopt a senior or family. Or you may contribute cash for the family that will be adopted by the children and youth of the parish. Pick up date is December 5.
Children and Youth Shopping for Christmas Baskets
Children and youth of all ages are invited to help shop for families in the Cathedral Shelter Christmas basket program. We will meet at the church Sunday, November 23, at 3:00 PM. After shopping we will return to the church to wrap the presents.
Yarn Ministry
The knitting group will meet Monday, November 17, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room.
Youth Group Meeting This Sunday, November 16th
Flashlights and long underwear...High School Youth, please dress for warmth (don’t forget your mittens!) and bring a flashlight for this Sunday’s gathering at 4 PM. We’ll be outside in the neighborhood for a short while prepping for Caroling for Canned Goods (December 7th). We’ll also make posters to rev up the parish. Come brimming with creativity. Your sponsors will supply warm snacks and unwavering faith in your abilities and talents.

The vestry meets Monday, December 16, beginning with Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m. in the church.
Cookie Walk Thank You
A huge thanks to everyone who participated in the Cookie Walk in any way—by baking, helping with set up, sales and clean up, and buying! Special thanks to coordinator Alison Deniston. If you did not have the chance to shop, assorted cookies will be available through this Sunday in the undercroft.

All children who wish to participate in the annual Christmas pageant should meet in the church after the 10:00 a.m. service. Parts will be assigned. The pageant takes place during the 4:00 p.m. family service on Christmas Eve. If you cannot attend the meeting on Sunday, but would like to be in the pageant, please be in touch with pageant director Pat Smith Huntoon.

Since 2004 the Daughters of the King have been committed to sharing the spirit of Christmas with the children of Lawrence Hall. Lawrence Hall Youth Services provides greatly needed services and programs for kids and their families suffering from trauma, abuse and neglect. Gift cards from Target or Best Buy or checks made out to Lawrence Hall may provide the only gifts these children receive this year. If you can help, please contact Iris Bestow. This is the last Sunday for contributions.

Courtney Reid Visits St. John’s, This Sunday, December 8
Courtney Reid, Director of Operations on Bishop Lee’s staff, will visit St. John’s Sunday, December 8. She will preach at both services and present a forum during the 9:00 a.m. education hour.
This Sunday! Caroling for Canned Goods: Everyone’s Invited
St. John’s high school youth group invites all of St John’s (plus friends and neighbors of all ages) to join us in “Caroling for Canned Goods” in our parish neighborhood on Sunday, December 8th at 3:30 pm (we’ll meet in the undercroft). Help us help the hungry served by the Rich Township Food Pantry. And what caroling party would be complete without homemade cocoa? Please join us for the fun, and bring a wagon if you have one. Remember, musical talent is totally optional: it’s the spirit that counts! Questions or contributions? Please call Dee McManamy.
Postlude for This Sunday from Marcel Dupré’s Passion Symphony
Marcel Dupré was one of the most influential organists of the 20th century. A master improvisor, his custom was to perform improvisations on tunes suggested by the audience. At a concert in Philadelphia in 1921, he was given four hymn tunes on which he immediately conceived the four movements of the Passion Symphony. The first movement, “The World Awaiting the Savior,” uses the sonata form to treat the Advent themes of darkness and light. Darkness is represented by restless Stravinskian rhythms and light by the hymn Jesu Redemptor Omnium. The two themes struggle throughout the development of the piece, and light is ultimately triumphant, establishing order amid the chaos and announcing the coming of the Savior. –Michael Soto

Highlights include the Grande Prairie Children's Choir and the Singers' new accompanist, our own Michael Soto! Advance-sale tickets are $15; $20 at the door; $10 for students at all times. Or consider a $40 season subscription for this concert and those in March and May. For more information or tickets, see Bob or Betsy Burgwald.

A Taize service for the season of Advent will be offered at Infant Jesus of Prague (at the corner of Flossmoor Road and Leavitt Avenue in Flossmoor) Friday, December 13, beginning at 7:30 pm.
