Wear Red for Pentecost
This Sunday is the Day of Pentecost. It is an informal custom in the church for everyone to wear red symbolizing the tongues, as of fire, in the Pentecost story.
Parish Office Summer Hours
The parish office is now on summer hours. The office will be open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
New E-vangelist Schedule
Beginning next week, the e-vangelist will be distributed electronically midday on Thursday. ALL submissions must be received in the parish office by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. Please email or phone the office with submissions.
Wednesday Bible Study Class
St. John's Wednesday bible study class is on hiatus for the summer, but we will be joining Holy Family's rector and parishioners for a study of Isaiah on the next few Tuesdays from 6:30 PM until approximately 8:00 PM at Holy Family in Park Forest. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Ice Cream Social
We’re gearing up for the St. John’s Annual Community Ice Cream Social scheduled for Monday, July 4th. Skiddles and Twistina will entertain us with their balloon creations. We will have ice cream, cold drinks, and hot dogs. All of this happens immediately following the 10 a.m. Flossmoor Children’s Parade and runs through about 12:15 p.m. Your participation is what makes this event a success. Are you able to bring in some wildflowers or flowers from your garden? Can you put up flyers around town? Can you help move tables and tents outside? Can you meet and greet our guests? Can you scoop ice cream or cut watermelon on July 3rd? Do you have a card table or two that we can borrow? How about (and this is for everyone) praying for glorious weather? Parish Picnic This Sunday
The annual parish picnic is this Sunday, May 19, on the south lawn following the 10:00 am service. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided; bring a side or dessert if you can. Please join us for fellowship and help plant the parish food garden.

During coffee hour after the 10:00 AM service, everyone is invited to help fill Easter eggs to be used in the children’s Easter egg hunt on Easter morning. The hunt takes place on the front lawn of the church following the 10:00 AM service on Easter.

The schedule for Holy Week worship services was included with the Easter letter. Copies are also available at the church on the information tables.
Contribute to Easter Flowers
Please consider making a contribution towards the lilies and other flowers that will adorn the church at Easter time. Contributions may be made in memory or thanksgiving or simply to the Glory of God. Flower contribution envelopes were included with this week’s Easter letter; they are also available in the pews.
Fish Fry Success
The St. Barnabas Men's Fellowship of St. John's and Holy Family will hold its regular monthly breakfast meeting this Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 AM at St. John's in Flossmoor. Last Friday, the group hosted yet another successful ‘Episcopal Fish Fry’ for the community, serving some 130 customers and raising $1,000 for the South Suburban PADS homeless ministry. Special thanks to all who turned out, as well as to the volunteers. Lastly, thanks also to the Smiley Tillmon Band for once again making this fundraiser the catch of the season!

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Come for the traditional pre-Lent pancake supper Tuesday, February 28, from 5:00 – 6:30 PM in the undercroft. Pancakes, bacon and sausage. Tickets at the door: $5/adults, $3/children. All proceeds benefit the youth group service projects.
This Sunday: Intergenerational Sunday School -- Prayer
This Sunday, February 26, all ages are invited to a class with Pastor Orr on the practice of daily (or at least regular) prayer at home. Tools and suggestions. Meet in the adult classroom in the education wing.
The Observance of a Holy Lent
We are asked by the church to observe the season of Lent not only in our worship but throughout our daily lives. A handout, “Lent for Dummies,” with suggestions for observing Lent is available on the information tables. Several booklets with daily devotions are also available.

The Men's Group will be meeting Saturday, March 4 from 7:30AM to 9:00AM at Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest. Afterwards, the Men's Group invites the men of the group and anyone else who is interested to join us as we visit the Frankfort Mosque for their open house and for coffee, tea, and snacks at 10:00AM. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about our Muslim neighbors. If anyone has any questions about the event, please ask Rob McManamy.

“Hoorah for Handel!” is the next Grande Prairie Singers concert, held at 4 PM, Sunday, March 12, Trinity Lutheran Church, 6850 W 159th St., Tinley Park. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for students with ID. On Sunday, March 26, the Singers will be part of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra's Rodgers & Hammerstein concert at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights (phone 800.838.3006 for tickets). Finally, $5 raffle tickets are available (1st prize, $1,000) from the Singers for the May 21st drawing (winners need not be present). See Michael Soto, Bob Burgwald, or Betsy Elliot for tickets for March 12 and the raffle.

Or did you connect with the decade years later while dressing up for Halloween? Please bring a copy of your best 70's look to the Feast on Jan 14. Just put your name on the back of your picture(s) and we will try to guess who's who. Don't forget to RSVP for the feast. Please bring your reply card to church on Sunday or there are extras on the information tables. We need your reply by Wednesday Jan 11, but responses before Friday Jan 7 are especially appreciated.

That was definitely our theme song as we caroled through St. John’s neighborhood December 11th. The weather didn’t deter our stalwart crew from bringing good cheer to neighbors and gathering canned goods for the Rich Township food pantry. Our efforts hauled in over 80 lbs of food and several cash donations for the pantry. Many thanks to everyone who participated!

St. John’s annual cookie walk is a local community tradition and an important fundraiser both for outreach and the parish. To succeed, everyone needs to bake! Volunteers are also needed. Call the parish office or contact Alison Deniston for more information.
ReVive (Cathedral Shelter) Christmas Baskets: Several Families Still Need Adoption!
Provide gifts this Christmas for a senior or family with limited financial means. Information is available in the undercroft. Wrapped and boxed gifts are due in the parish office by November 30.
Best Buddies Pet Pantry Seeks Toys
The Bloom Township food pantry holds a Christmas party for their clients each year. Dale from Best Buddies Pet Pantry attends with dog and cat toys and invites the kids to choose a toy to give their pets for Christmas. If you can donate a new toy, please drop it off in the Best Buddies collection box by the staircases. There's no such thing as collecting too many toys, because Dale also plays Santa at various rescue shelters in the area. Of course pet food donations are always welcome as well. Our next re-packaging work day at St. John's is on December 10th at 10 AM, so that's when the toys and food will be picked up. Thanks for your support!
Make Advent Wreaths Next Sunday
Regular Sunday School classes will not meet next Sunday, November 27. Everyone is invited to the undercroft during the 9:00 AM hour to make Advent wreaths for use at home.
Practicing Our Faith Book Club
For December the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is reading The Name of God is Mercy by Pope Francis. Read the book, and then join us on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7pm in the Guild Room for the discussion. New members are always welcome.
St. John's Annual Caroling for Canned Goods & Best Cocoa Ever: December 11, 4:00 pm.
Everyone's invited...bring your friends of all ages! Join church youth in collecting canned goods for Rich Township Food Pantry with our church neighborhood caroling party! Meet in St. J's undercroft at 4pm on December 11th for homemade cocoa (the real McCoy). We'll then set out to spread Christmas cheer among our neighbors, in exchange for canned goods for the hungry. Feel free to bring items to add to the haul. And if you have a wagon we can use for the effort, bring it along. Please join us--it's a fun activity and really brings on the Christmas Spirit in a remarkably short time--little more than an hour. Perfect for those who need service hours! The Daughters of the King are once again coordinating the collection of school supplies for Respond Now. This year they are particularly requesting that we provide spiral notebooks, folders and backpacks. They will be assembling the backpacks early, so all donations must be in to St. John’s by Wednesday, July 20. Look for a collection box in the west foyer.
Volunteer to Help Pets
Can you spare an hour this Saturday, July 16th? We need your help to package pet food for Best Buddies Pet Pantry. Local community food pantries will distribute the packaged food to their clients who need a little extra help in order to keep and feed their pets. It can make the difference between keeping their canine or feline best buddies at home or having to surrender them to shelters. This is an easy ministry for all ages. Please help on the 16th at 10 AM in the education wing.

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Ice Cream Social by scooping ice cream, cutting watermelon, setting up tents and tables, arranging flowers, making and pouring lemonade and iced tea, serving ice cream, lemonade and iced tea, grilling hotdogs, selling food, overseeing the children’s table, helping the balloon ladies, greeting the community, attending, cleaning up, donating to the entertainment and most importantly praying for good weather. This event would not work as well if all of you didn’t support it. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

This Sunday (May 15th) is the Day of Pentecost, the day when we traditionally wear red to church to symbolize joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. After the Eucharist, we’ll carry the celebration to the undercroft for coffee hour. This year, if you can, please bring some red finger food to share. Think of flames, wind, and doves. Be creative and have fun sharing on this festival day!
Diocesan Confirmation Service at St. James Cathedral: May 21
Young people from St. John’s will be among those confirmed by Bishop Lee at the Spring Diocesan Confirmation Service, Saturday, May 21, 11:00 AM at St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron St. in Chicago. It is a glorious service; everyone is invited to attend.

Are you, or someone in your family, graduating this spring? As we do each year, we would like to celebrate graduates (at all levels). Please call or email the parish office with the information. Weather permitting, we will gather on the south lawn for the annual parish spring picnic. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided. Please bring a salad or side if you can. We will also plant the parish food garden!

A huge thank you to everyone who gamely ignored wet grass, mud and a cool and gloomy day last Sunday to work on the church grounds. And thanks to Lynn Ruschhaupt for coordinating the landscape efforts. It looks good!

Hail Thee, Festival Day
Next Sunday (May 15th) is the Day of Pentecost, the day when we traditionally wear red to church to symbolize joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit. After the Eucharist, we’ll carry the celebration to the undercroft for coffee hour. This year, if you can, please bring some red finger food to share. Think of flames, wind, and doves. Be creative and have fun sharing on this festival day!
ECW Luncheon
The women of the church are having a potluck luncheon this Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 11:30 AM in the undercroft. All are welcome.

Announcements for May 1
Blue Jeans Sunday is This Sunday
This Sunday, May 1, is our spring landscape workday. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually, bring a rake or some clippers (or we’ll have some to borrow) and stay after church for a bit to help prepare the church grounds for spring.
Ascension Day Service – Thursday, May 5
Ascension Day is a major feast day in the church calendar. It always falls 40 days after Easter. Jesus’ ascension will be celebrated with the Holy Eucharist, Thursday, May 5, beginning at 7:00 PM.
Yarn Ministry
The knitting and crocheting group will meet Monday, May 2, beginning at 7:00 PM in the Guild Room. This is the last meeting for the season; meetings will resume October 3.
District 161 Fun Run Near St. John’s May 1
The PTO of School District 161 is holding a fun run/walk/stroll Sunday morning, May 1. It begins at Parker Junior High and part of the course passes St. John’s. There will be NO street closures or parking restrictions. Please allow extra time, however, to get to church and be careful of participants who may be in the streets.
