Fundraising Coupon Booklets

The Vestry is supporting a new easy and fun product to sell as a fundraising campaign for St. John’s. We are selling fundraising coupon books for $20.00 from a company called Simple Qpons. The books allow individuals to save money with things like buy-one-get-one-free and 50% off discounts at tons of our favorite local merchants. These books make for great small gifts and stocking stuffers. There are two editions of the book: one for Northwest Indiana and one for Southland Chicago. You can contact Vestry members or the church office to either purchase books yourself  OR to help in selling books for this fundraiser.

Christmas Pageant

We will be doing a run through of the Christmas Pageant right after the 10:00 service on Sunday December 23rd. We will also go through costumes and props to prepare everyone for their role. If you have any questions, please contact Pat Smith-Huntoon.

FMSC: Thank you, people of St. John’s!

The very generous donations from our parish (just shy of $550) paid for 2,196 meals—enough to feed 6 children for a full year.  Twelve of your fellow parishioners went on to pack 5,508 meals in just two short hours at the Aurora facility of  Feed My Starving Children this past Saturday…that’s enough food to feed 17 children for a full year.  We were part of a group of roughly 200 volunteers who together packed 41,472 meals for malnourished and starving children.  That massive number feeds 114 children for a full year. Please seek out these people and ask them about their experience and consider joining us the next time we go to FMSC:  Laurie & Jack Zielinski, Margi Strombeck, Lita Morgan, Ann Moser, Ted Stone, Eric Turnquest, Mike & Catherine Madden, Elliot McManamy and Rob & Dee McManamy.  You’ll hear just how fun it was and how the Holy Spirit was with everyone there, helping us move a mountain of food.  [To learn more about this highly rated and respected organization, please go to www.fmsc.org]

Center for Independence Update

On Monday night members of the vestry attended the Flossmoor Village Trustees meeting. The purpose of our attendance was to ask the village to reinstate the “Special Use” Zoning exception that had expired a couple of years ago. The Trustees agreed to grant the exception unanimously.  Also, the Trustees thanked the church for being such a good institution for the village. They were very appreciative of our efforts to help the people of Flossmoor and the surrounding area. Now that we have the “Special Use Exception” in place the vestry can begin our exploratory conversations with The Center for Independence Through Conductive Education. Practicing Our Faith Book Club

In December, the Practicing Our Faith Book Club is reading Between the Dark and the Daylight: Embracing the Contradictions of Life by Joan Chittister, a book that "explores the concerns of modern life, of the overworked mind and hurting heart." The book club will meet on Thursday, December 21 at 7:00pm in the Guild Room to discuss the book. New members are always welcome!

Respond Now

The Daughters of the King are collecting personal items for the men and women that receive assistance through Respond Now. Suggestions: soap, shampoo, body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, etc. Both full and travel-size are needed.

Bible Study/Fellowship Group

This Bible study group will meet at members' houses for a pot luck dinner and fellowship once a month. Kids are welcome! The first meeting will be in January. If you are interested in joining, please contact Mary VanSwol, and state whether you prefer Saturday or Sunday from 5-7 pm. An official time will be announced closer to the date.

Outdoor Altar Tiles

Parishioners or visitors can still donate and receive an original outdoor altar tile from around the Columbarium. For more information, feel free to contact Steve Hofer if you are interested. Available tiles are still on display down in the undercroft.

Vestry Nominating Committee

The Vestry has approved Cynthia Turnquest, Alice Creason , and Shirley Reilly to serve as the nominating committee for our new 2018 Vestry members.

St. John’s Christmas Eve Pageant

Our Christmas Eve Mass will have a pageant! We will be using the book by Nikki Grimes, “Voices of Christmas” as our guide. There is still time to join the fun; we will meet after the 9:00 service this Sunday (12/24) to pick out/organize our props in the Adult Formation room. We will then meet back in that room at 4:40 pm to check in before the start of the service. Children of all ages are welcome; this is an opportunity for anyone who ever wanted to be in the pageant but never was brave enough to raise their hand or did not have a Christmas Pageant at their home church when they were younger.

From the Vestry: This Week’s Pledge Update 
Thanks to those who turned in their pledge to St. John's during this busy time of expectation. The pledges that came in this week brings us to a total of $172,718. Again, our total estimated budget for 2017 is $230,000. It is still possible to turn in a pledge card, call or email the Parish office with a pledge amount for 2017. And yet again (and again and again), thanks to all who give of their time and their funds to our Parish. –Anne Edwards, Senior Warden

Christmas Pageant Orientation Meeting This Sunday
The annual children’s Christmas Pageant is part of the 4:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. All children who would like to participate the pageant and their parents are asked to attend a brief organizational meeting in the church after the 10:00 service this Sunday. Practicing Our Faith Book Club
The Practicing Our Faith Book Club is meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7pm in the Guild Room to discuss The Name of God is Mercy by Pope Francis. New members are always welcome!

Best Buddies Pet Pantry Seeks Toys
The Bloom Township food pantry holds a Christmas party for their clients each year. Dale from Best Buddies Pet Pantry attends with dog and cat toys and invites the kids to choose a toy to give their pets for Christmas. If you can donate a new toy, please drop it off in the Best Buddies collection box by the staircases. Of course pet food donations are always welcome as well. Our next re-packaging work day at St. John's is on December 10th at 10 AM, so that's when the toys and food will be picked up. Thanks for your support!

St. John's Annual Caroling for Canned Goods & Best Cocoa Ever: December 11, 4:00 pm.
Everyone's invited...bring your friends of all ages! Join church youth in collecting canned goods for Rich Township Food Pantry with our church neighborhood caroling party! Meet in St. J's undercroft at 4pm on December 11th for homemade cocoa (the real McCoy). Bring canned goods to contribute and a wagon, if you have one. Please join us--it's a fun activity and really brings on the Christmas Spirit in a remarkably short time--little more than an hour. Perfect for those who need service hours! Grande Prairie Singers Holiday Concert
Sunday, Dec. 11, at 4 pm at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Matteson. Selections include “A Boy Was Born” by Benjamin Britten and John Rutter songs such as “Candlelight Carol” and “Shepherd's Pipe Carol.” Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults ($20 at the door), available from Bob Burgwald or Betsy Elliot.

Our annual celebration of our parish community, the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, will take place Saturday evening, January 9. The event begins with Evening Prayer commemorating our patron saint and continues with a feast hosted by the vestry. Please RSVP by January 5.

Cookie Walk Thank You
A sincere thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s cookie walk. $3,500 was raised, and of that, $2,100 has already been distributed to local charities. A special thank you to Alison Deniston for coordinating!

Yarn Ministry still needs the congregation’s assistance
We will be collecting some winter clothing articles for the PADS Ministry. Donations of hand or machine made (store bought) scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens for men, women and children. PADS is also accepting coats and socks for all their people in need. Donated items, if not new, should be clean and gently used. We urgently request all the crocheters, knitters, and shoppers in the parish, to please help the Yarn Ministry make this another very successful project. Collections bins are located in the undercroft and at the office entrance. There is a PADS collection bin located in the undercroft, as well. Deposit items in any of the containers, Thank you. The next collection date is January 31.

Handel’s Messiah
Illiana Oratorio Society is pleased to announce its performance of Handel's Messiah which will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2015. It will be held at First Christian Reformed Church of South Holland (16248 South Park Ave, South Holland, IL) at 2p.m. This year's soloists will feature: Elaine DeYoung, Maria Bouwhamp-Luttjeboer, Jack Cotterell, and Douglas Anderson. All are welcome to attend!

Christmas Pageant Rehearsals 
All children participating in the children’s Christmas pageant should attend the rehearsal this Sunday, December 21, beginning at 9:00 AM. The dress rehearsal is scheduled for December 23 at 4:00 PM.

The Feast is Coming
Our annual feast celebrating both our patron saint, St. John the Evangelist, and celebrating our parish community will be Saturday, January 3, beginning at 4:30 PM. Everyone is heartily invited to attend and join the celebration. Mark your calendar and watch for your invitation coming soon in the mail.

Christmas Service Schedule
On Christmas Eve, services of the Holy Eucharist will be held at 4:00 PM (including the children’s Christmas pageant) and at 10:00 PM (including special music by the organist and choir). On Christmas Day the celebration of the Holy Eucharist begins at 10:00 AM. The Wednesday morning healing service will not be held on Christmas Eve.

Sunday School Vacation
Sunday School classes for all ages and youth worship are on vacation this Sunday and next, December 21 and 28. Special Christmas Edition of the e-vangelist A special edition of the e-vangelist will be published Monday listing reminders of ministry assignments for Christmas services.

The vestry will meet Monday, December 15, beginning with Evening Prayer in the church at 7:00 PM.

Practicing Our Faith Book Club
All are welcome to join the book club discussion of Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope by Joan Chittester. We'll meet in the Guild Room on December 18th at 7:00 PM for what promises to be another lively exchange. Our selection for the third Thursday in January is Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the “Saint of Calcutta,” which chronicles Mother Teresa’s spiritual heights and doubtful desolation as she described them in writings to her spiritual advisors.

How Many Episcopalians does it take to drink three gallons of cocoa?
Apparently, it takes thirty-two. That’s how many people gathered December 7th for caroling for canned goods and complete cocoa consumption. Great success on both fronts: We collected more than 80 pounds of food for the Rich Township Food Pantry. Sincere thanks to our youth for their prep work and for bringing along friends and family. Thank you to other parishioners who joined us and brought friends and family, too. Finally, many thanks to the residents of Bruce Avenue who gave so generously.

Cathedral Shelter Thank You’s
For those who contributed to the Cathedral Shelter Christmas Basket program, thank you’s are in the undercroft. Look for the card with your name on it.

Sunday School for Children Meets This Week
Sunday School classes for children are in session this Sunday, December 14. After this Sunday, they will be on break until after Christmas.

Children’s Christmas Pageant
Children and youth of all ages are invited to participate in the annual Christmas Pageant. The pageant is the proclamation of the Gospel at the 4:00 PM service on Christmas Eve. If you would like to be in the pageant, please gather in the church this Sunday, December 14, following the 10:00 AM service.

High School Youth Group

Help the Kids at Lawrence Hall
Since 2004 the Daughters of the King have been committed to sharing the spirit of Christmas with the children of Lawrence Hall. Lawrence Hall Youth Services provides greatly needed services and programs for kids and their families suffering from trauma, abuse and neglect. Gift cards from Target or Best Buy or checks made out to Lawrence Hall may provide the only gifts these children receive this year. If you can help, please contact Iris Bestow. This is the last Sunday for contributions.

2013 Offering Envelopes are Available
Offering Envelopes for next year are available in the undercroft. Please pick yours up. Using the envelopes helps the parish record contributions more efficiently.

Parish Office Closed Christmas Week
The parish office will be closed December 24 through January 1. Phone messages will be checked periodically.

Contribute to Christmas Flowers
If you wish to contribute to the poinsettias and special greens that adorn the church during the Christmas season, please use the flower envelope included with the Christmas letter or found in the pews. Contributions may be designated as memorials, thanksgivings or purely to the Glory of God.

Save the Date for the Feast
The annual Feast of St. John the Evangelist, celebrating both our patron saint and our own parish community is scheduled for Saturday, January 5. Please plan to come. Invitations have been mailed; RSVP cards can be placed in the offering plate or returned to the parish office.

Gifts to Lawrence Hall
Thanks be to God for everyone who contributed money and gift cards to the youth of Lawrence Hall for Christmas. $1075.00 was raised.

Christmas Worship Schedule
Services on Christmas Eve will be at 4:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The early service includes the children’s Christmas pageant. The late service is the festive, choral Christ Mass. It is preceded by special Christmas music for choir, organ and congregation beginning at 10:00 p.m. The Christmas Day service begins at 10:00 a.m.

Christmas Pageant Organizational Meeting This Sunday
Children of all ages are invited to participate in the children’s Christmas Pageant, offered during the 4:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. There will be a brief organizational meeting for parents and children in the church after the 10:00 service this Sunday, December 16.

New Parish E-mail Address
We have updated the computer and changed internet service providers in the parish office. Check with the parish office if you need the new e-mail address. Also, please note that we are no longer maintaining a dedicated fax line.

Contribute to Christmas Flowers
If you wish to contribute to the poinsettias and special greens that adorn the church during the Christmas season, please use the flower envelope included with the Christmas letter or found in the pews. Contributions may be designated as memorials, thanksgivings or purely to the Glory of God.

Save the Date for the Feast
The annual Feast of St. John the Evangelist, celebrating both our patron saint and our own parish community is scheduled for Saturday, January 5. Please plan to come. Invitations have been mailed; RSVP cards can be placed in the offering plate or returned to the parish office.

Cookie Walk Thanks
This year’s Cookie Walk was a great success. Heartfelt thanks to all the bakers, buyers and helpers. Without you the Cookie Walk could not function or exist. Profits are over $3,500. Save the date; next year’s Cookie Walk will be December 7, 2013. –Alison Deniston

Christmas Worship Schedule
Services on Christmas Eve will be at 4:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The early service includes the children’s Christmas pageant. The late service is the festive, choral Christ Mass. It is preceded by special Christmas music for choir, organ and congregation beginning at 10:00 p.m. The Christmas Day service begins at 10:00 a.m.

The Christmas Pageant is Coming
Children of all ages are invited to participate in the children’s Christmas Pageant, offered during the 4:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. There will be a brief organization meeting after the 10:00 service next Sunday, December 16.

December Sunday School Schedule
Sunday School classes for children and adults will meet this Sunday, December 9, and next Sunday, December 16. They will then be on vacation December 23 and 30 and will resume January 6.

Daughters of the King Help Lawrence Hall
Once again the Daughters of the King will be coordinating the St. John the Evangelist Church Wish List Drive for the children, youth and families at Lawrence Hall Youth Services. You may give your donation to Iris Bestow or any Daughter of the King.

Advent Festival of Lessons & Carols at Church of the Holy Family
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest will hold its most beloved annual musical event this Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. This year's festival will feature inspiring seasonal hymns and anthems sung by Holy Family's own choir, joined by the choir of St. Paul’s in Homewood, and the Canticum Novum chamber ensemble. All are welcome to this magical and spiritual service, which will be followed by a gala reception in the Parish Hall. Holy Family is located at the corner of Sauk Trail and Orchard Dr., just west of Western Avenue.

Advent Taize Service at Infant Jesus of Prague
A one hour service of simple songs, scripture, and prayer. Thursday, December 13, 7:30 p.m.

• Christmas Pageant Rehearsals
  Rehearsals for the children’s Christmas pageant are this Sunday, December 18, at 9:00 a.m. and Friday, December 23, at 4:00 p.m.
  
  
• Christmas Service Schedule
  On Christmas Eve, worship services begin at 4:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The children’s Christmas pageant is part of the early service. The late service is preceded by a musical celebration of anthems and carols beginning at 10:00 p.m. On Christmas Day, Sunday, December 25, there will be one worship service, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
  
  
• Sunday School Holiday
  Sunday School classes for all ages—children and adults—will not meet December 18, 25 and January 1. (During the Sunday School hour, children should come to the pageant rehearsal on December 18). Classes will resume January 8.
  
  
• Mark your Calendars for the Feast, January 7
  The vestry invites everyone in the parish to celebrate the feast day of our patron saint at a festive dinner Saturday, January 7. Your invitation will be arriving soon. We look forward to celebrating together.
  
  
• Sexton Position Open
  We are currently advertising to fill the sexton position on a permanent basis. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please ask him or her to contact Pastor Orr. It is a part-time position. The primary duties are cleaning and light maintenance.

  Since 2004 the Daughters of the King have been committed to sharing the spirit of Christmas with the children of Lawrence Hall. Lawrence Hall Youth Services provides greatly needed services and programs for kids and their families suffering from trauma, abuse and neglect. Gift cards from Target or Best Buy or checks made out to Lawrence Hall may provide the only gifts these children receive this year. If you can help, please contact Iris Bestow.
  
  
• Be a Part of the Children’s Christmas Pageant
  Children of all ages are invited to be a part of the Christmas pageant at the 4:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. Families, please let Pastor Orr know as soon as possible whether or not you can participate in the pageant.
  
  
• Holiday Concert this Sunday, December 11
  The Grande Prairie Singers present “A Winter Serenade” at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 11, at Faith United Protestant Church in Park Forest. Tickets are $20 at the door ($18) in advance, but they’re available from Betsy Burgwald for the special price of only $10 each.
  
  
• Taizé Recap
  Approximately 70 people attended the Taizé service last Sunday (about half not parishioners of St. John’s). It was a spirit-filled gift of peace during the Advent season. Thanks to Peter Irvine, Janet Irvine, Steven Russell, Sue Buckman, the St. John’s choir, and Amy Pelletier (from IJP) for their contributions to the service.

• Pledge Reminder
  If you have not yet turned in your pledge card, please do so as soon as possible. The vestry will be meeting soon to work on the 2011 budget. You may place it in the offering plate on Sunday or return it to the parish office. Thank you.

  All children (ages 3-12) are invited to participate in the Christmas Pageant on Friday, December 24 at the 4:00 p.m. service. • Cookie Walk Thanks
  After waiting a year of looking forward to our annual Holiday Cookie Walk sale, a little snow wasn’t about to keep our faithful buyers away. There they were lined up patiently waiting for the doors to open at 9:00 a.m. And thanks to our expert bakers, candy makers, knitters, jewelry makers and army of helpers, they weren’t disappointed. Our Holiday Cookie Walk was a success once again!
  
  
• IPO Holiday Concert
  The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra presents its Holiday Concerts featuring guest choruses and soloists on Saturday, December 18 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 19 at 3:00 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the Lincoln-Way East Performing Arts Center in Frankfort.
