Reflection for December 29
The central miracle asserted by Christians is the Incarnation. They say that God became Man. Every other miracle prepares for this, or exhibits this, or results from this. Just as every natural events is the manifestation at a particular place and moment of Nature’s total character, so every particular Christian miracle manifests at a particular place and moment the character and significance of the Incarnation (C. S. Lewis, Miracles).

Minutes of Vestry Meeting - November 18, 2013
Formation
Opening
After Evening Prayer, vestry members shared individual prayers of thanksgiving and prayer requests.
Attendance
Present were the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Audrey Ongman; vestry members Candice Barrera, Anne Edwards, Steve Hofer, Gale Michael, Mark Moxley, and Jim Whitfield; treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and clerk, Susan Marquis. Vestry members Greg Lawrence and Patti Pohrte, and the junior warden, Bill Bestow, were absent.
Parish Stewardship
Approval of Minutes
Regarding the report of a vestry member’s resignation, the rector suggested that the phrase “when the vacancy occurs near the end of the year” be added to the description of the procedure that has been used in the past, that is, “the position will remain open until a new member is voted in at the annual meeting to fill the remainder of the term.” Gale Michael moved that the minutes be accepted as edited. After a second from Jim Whitfield, the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that the Treasurer’s Report contains a new account for the Youth Group. This will need to be part of the budget for 2014. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew account of $1,100 has been added to the report in a separate line. We are falling a little short on revenues, but special offerings at Christmas may give revenues a boost. Debbi asked the vestry to give her any suggestions that would make her reports easier to understand. Audrey Ongman made a motion that the Treasurer’s Report be accepted. Anne Edwards seconded the motion, and it was approved.
Information
Rector’s Report
- The Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s separate checking account has been closed, but there will be a separate line in the Treasurer’s Report for any income and expense such as the fish fry and PADS breakfasts.
-Pastor Orr thanked those who helped with stewardship conversations and with their commitment to help the parish grow.
- Twenty people attended the first All Souls Day service on November 2nd. This service with votives and pictures of the departed will be scheduled next November as well.
- Pastor Orr met with Dan Pohrte, who offered his architectural services to the parish pro bono. They discussed two possible locations for an elevator lift, including the pastor’s suggestion of the three levels located at sexton’s room/first floor hall/acolyte room. Mr. Pohrte anticipates doing the preliminary work over the winter. The entire project timeline is unclear since it will be done around his regular work commitments. Other accessibility work such as the bathrooms and entryway may be beyond our financial means at present.
- The diocesan convention will be held at the end of the week with Gale Michael, Shirley O’Reilly, and Cyndie Knoll serving as representatives, and Doris Sheffer, Don Rubins, and Sue O’Brien as alternates. At the convention Pastor Orr will be re-appointed as Dean of the Joliet Deanery.
- The rector is in the process of ordering carriage lights to replace those along the public sidewalk that had been vandalized. Mark Moxley is working on lighting along the sidewalk by the columbarium. The current motion-detector light is unreliable and does not illuminate the entire walkway for long enough. The plan is to install pathway lights.
Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
Audrey Ongman reported that the sexton has requested some old towels to be used in cleaning. There may be a sufficient number available from the sacristy. Audrey will check with the Altar Guild directress.
Upcoming Parish Events
Discussion and Decisions
Feast
The annual patronal feast, celebrating the feast day of St. John the Evangelist, is scheduled this year on Saturday, January 4th. Anne Edwards volunteered to coordinate the event with volunteers Gale Michael, Candice Barrera, Greg Lawrence, and Steve Hofer volunteering for the planning committee. On January 3rd and 4th, all vestry members will decorate, cook, serve, and clean up.
Diocesan Fund Raiser
The diocesan office building recently has undergone major renovations. The plaza was updated, the first floor was opened up providing a space for art exhibits and a planned café, and the fifth floor has become a retreat center and office space for Living Compass. The diocesan staff is hoping to get some level of financial donations from every parish. After discussion, Steve Hofer moved that in the spring the vestry will accept donations in honor of the present class of confirmands and in honor of all past confirmands. The vestry will match parishioner gifts with funds from the budget up to a total of $5,000. Gale Michael seconded the motion, and it was approved.
Nominating Committee
According to the vestry by-laws, a nominating committee is formed every year in order to nominate parishioners for vestry and warden positions. The committee is to be made up of the rector, the wardens, and three vestry members, one from each class, chosen by lot. This year, the vestry members chosen are Candice Barrera, Mark Moxley, and Patti Pohrte.
Closing
The meeting ended at 8:35 following prayer. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for December 16th.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for December 15
Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete. (Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice). In the traditional Latin mass these words are the beginning of the Introit appointed for the Third Sunday of Advent. Hence, this Sunday is sometimes called “Gaudy” Sunday or Gaudete Sunday. If your Advent wreath includes a gaudy pink candle of rejoicing, this is the Sunday to light it. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.

Postlude for This Sunday from Marcel Dupré’s Passion Symphony
Marcel Dupré was one of the most influential organists of the 20th century. A master improvisor, his custom was to perform improvisations on tunes suggested by the audience. At a concert in Philadelphia in 1921, he was given four hymn tunes on which he immediately conceived the four movements of the Passion Symphony. The first movement, “The World Awaiting the Savior,” uses the sonata form to treat the Advent themes of darkness and light. Darkness is represented by restless Stravinskian rhythms and light by the hymn Jesu Redemptor Omnium. The two themes struggle throughout the development of the piece, and light is ultimately triumphant, establishing order amid the chaos and announcing the coming of the Savior. –Michael Soto

The Advent Collect
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen (Book of Common Prayer, p. 211).

Minutes of Vestry Meeting - October 21, 2013
Formation
Opening
After Evening Prayer, vestry members shared individual prayers of thanksgiving and prayer requests.
Attendance
Present were the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Audrey Ongman; the junior warden, Bill Bestow; vestry members Anne Edwards, Steve Hofer, Greg Lawrence, Gale Michael, Mark Moxley, and Patti Pohrte; treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and clerk, Susan Marquis. Vestry members Candice Barrera and Jim Whitfield were absent.
Parish Stewardship
Approval of Minutes
Bill Bestow moved that the minutes from the vestry meeting of September 16th be approved. Gale Michael seconded, and the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that expenses are running under budget due to the open Christian Education Director’s position, but some of the staff position savings have been offset by bulk buying of supplies such as printer ink and candles. Revenues are behind. Debbi estimates that we usually collect about 92-93% of what is pledged for the year. The lag is not alarming, and there still is some time to catch up. A $3,000 gift to the church is being used to update the tile flooring in two of the rooms of the education wing. Gale Michael moved that the treasurer’s report be accepted. After a second by Anne Edwards, the motion passed.
Rector’s Discretionary Account Report
Greg Lawrence moved, and Bill Bestow seconded, that the Rector’s Discretionary Fund report for the third quarter of 2013 be accepted. The motion carried.
Brotherhood Account
The Brotherhood of St. Andrew has an independent bank account. Pastor Orr proposed that we close it as a separate account and add the balance to the church’s special purpose fund. Audrey Ongman moved to follow this proposal. Steve Hofer seconded. The motion was approved.
Information
Rector’s Report
-Pastor Orr announced that Bob Berner resigned from the vestry due to his conflicting travel schedule and suggested that the vestry follow the procedure that has been used in the past for resignations, that being that, when the vacancy occurs near the end of the year, the position will remain open until a new member is voted in at the annual meeting to fill the remainder of the term. There was vestry agreement to this plan.
-St. John’s will offer an All Souls Day service on Saturday, November 2nd. While this service will be new to the parish, it is not new to the broader church. The idea arose as Pastor Orr looked for something liturgical that would be especially comforting for people living with grief.
-The new acolyte photo collage is ready and will be hung on the hall wall during the upcoming week.
-The rector reported on accessibility news. Steve Hofer has found another lift company, but the quote from this company is higher than the first quote we received. Architect Dan Pohrte has offered to talk with us. Barry Berg has communicated with Pastor Orr by e-mail. He hopes to get some drawings to us soon.
-Pastor Orr will attend two days of a diocesan clergy conference on Monday and Tuesday at Techny Towers.
-After a two-year search, Holy Family in Park Forest has called a rector, Rachael Gregory. She will begin next month.
-Pastor Orr thanked the vestry for its presence when Bishop Lee visited our parish.
Wardens’ Reports and/or Other Reports from Parish Organizations
The senior warden announced that the kitchen has been professionally cleaned. The oven has been repaired (i.e. the pilot light was re-lit). Audrey also noted that donations during coffee hour have been covering only about half of expenses. The conclusion of the discussion that followed was that people just need to be reminded to donate. Greg Lawrence will make a reminder announcement in church.
Upcoming Parish Events
November 2 at 5 PM – All Souls Day service
November 3 from 4-6 PM – rector’s open house
November 27 at 7:30 PM at Infant Jesus of Prague – Community Thanksgiving service
November 28 at 10 AM – St. John’s Thanksgiving service
Discussion and Decisions
Fall Pledge Campaign
The rector wants to encourage generosity and asked the vestry how to help people really think about it. It was noted that when the cost of living increases were made explicit to the parish by letter some few years ago, people added to their pledges.
Pastor Orr suggested adding an outreach ministry option to the pledge card this year so that parishioners could pledge to support specific ministries in addition to their general pledges. Ministries suggested by the vestry included: Night Ministry, Respond Now (food pantry), a community garden on church grounds, education (tutoring or helping in schools), local conservation, PADS, and South Suburban Family Shelter.
Mark Moxley and Bill Bestow offered to spearhead the garden project. Audrey Ongman and Gale Michael volunteered to organize the Night Ministry outreach, and Patti Pohrte the Sauk Village food pantry ministry.
The vestry was in favor of once again doing spoken presentations in church at both services. Greg Lawrence volunteered to speak on November 3rd, Mark Moxley on November 10th, and Patti Pohrte on November 17th. Pledge Sunday is November 24th.
Diocesan Capital Campaign
Pastor Orr reminded vestry members to read the document on the diocesan Grace and Gladness Campaign that was e-mailed with vestry materials. The campaign is raising funds for ministries throughout the diocese and for programs in the renovated St. James Commons.
Closing
Following prayer, the meeting ended at 9:15 PM. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for November18th.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for November 17
As online worship becomes more common in some churches, leaders within the United Methodist Church are debating whether the denomination should condone online communion…. The majority of the leaders agreed with the statement that communion “entails the actual tactile sharing of bread and wine in a service that involves people corporeally together in the same place.” Not everyone, however, agreed that congregants must be in the same place. The debate raises fundamental questions at the heart of the church experience: the definition of community, individual participation, the role of tradition and basic theological understandings of the meaning of communion (Christian Century, November 13, 2013).

Reflection for November 10
Life is driven by renewal, the persistent energy of rebirth that makes all things new. Pain and loss and death are inevitable, but each and every time they happen, there will be new life. Death happens, but it is never the final answer. Everything that begins ends, and every ending contains the promise of a new beginning (New Life, Edward Stone Gleason).

Reflection for All Saints Sunday - November 3
The Church is “the communion of Saints,” that is, a people made holy through their mutual participation in the mystery of Christ. This communion exists through history, continues in the present, and endures beyond the grave and gate of death into heaven, for God is not a God of the dead but of the living, and those still on their earthly pilgrimage continue to have fellowship with those whose work is done. The pilgrim Church and the Church at rest join in watching and praying for that great day when Christ shall come again to change and make perfect our common humanity in the image of Christ’s risen glory. (Holy Women, Holy Men, p. 742).

All Souls Day Service – Saturday, November 2
The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (also known as All Souls Day) developed—as sort of an extension of All Saints Day—as a day on which the Church remembers that vast body of the faithful who may be unknown in the wider fellowship of the church but are no less members of the company of the redeemed, particularly family members and friends. This year St. John’s will offer a service on All Souls Day, November 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. You are invited to bring a small photo or memento of any individual you wish to remember at this service. The Episcopal Church of the Holy Family in Park Forest has called a new Rector. The Rev. Rachael Gregory begins her tenure on November 1. Welcome, and God bless her in her new ministry.

This year St. John’s will offer a service on All Souls Day, November 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. You are invited to bring a small photo or memento of any individual you wish to remember at this service. These will be displayed during the service. You may also still submit names to be remembered in the prayers of the All Souls Day service by calling or e-mailing the parish office.

Reflection for October 27
Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops (A. Bartlett Giamatti).

Information
Rector’s Report
The rector expressed gratitude to Cyndie Knoll, Candice Barrera, and Shirley Reilly who prepared food for the Jubilation, and to Cynthia Turnquest, who set up and decorated the tables.
In what has become an annual event, the church school children painted a mural on the large window in the Atrium. This year’s theme is All Creatures Great and Small.
Patti Pohrte and Diane Walsh-Madden will teach the church school children who are in kindergarten through third grade. Mark Moxley, Nichole Dailor, and Bob DeOliveira will teach fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, while Cyndie Knoll will prepare seventh and eighth graders for confirmation using a program called “Confirm Not Conform.” Pastor Orr will teach the adult class using a version of this same program. Larissa Smith is the new Nursery Director. Dee McManamy and Shirley Reilly are reinstating a high school youth program that will meet every-other-week on Sunday evenings.
Pastor Orr continues to think about a sabbatical, although she has no definite plans yet. She has one more week of vacation remaining this year.
Work has been completed on tree removal and pruning on church grounds.
Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
Audrey Ongman reported that a new freezer has been delivered and is working in the sexton’s room. The kitchen will be professionally cleaned, and a parishioner has offered to pay for the service. One of the ovens in the kitchen is not working.
Upcoming Parish Events
September 29th – Bishop Lee will visit St. John’s. He will preach at both services and meet with the children of the parish during the 9:00 o’clock hour. He will meet with the vestry in the rectory for a potluck lunch. Vestry members signed up to bring food.
Discussion and Decisions
Convention
The rector presented a list of delegates and alternates for the diocesan convention to be held in November. Cyndie Knoll, Gale Michael, and Shirley Reilly were slated as delegates, and Sue O’Brien, Don Rubins, and Doris Sheffer were proposed as alternates. Bill Bestow moved that the list be approved. Audrey Ongman seconded, and the motion passed.
Stewardship
Pastor Orr recommended that the vestry read a stewardship article from “Vestry Papers.”
The vestry brainstormed a bit and came up with some preliminary ideas, including:
Accessibility
The vestry subcommittee that has been working on the accessibility project (Cyndie Knoll, Mark Moxley, and Patti Pohrte) met along with Steve Hofer and the rector to discuss the feasibility of installing a lift in the church rather than an elevator. The committee’s recommendation was that the vestry affirm an ongoing pursuit of a lift. There was general agreement that this pursuit should be undertaken. Steve met with a representative of one company to assess the site, and a second lift company will come out to do the same. Pastor Orr will be in contact the architectural firm that already did some work on the accessibility project.
Closing
The meeting ended with prayer and with Pastor Orr’s reminder to the vestry to come with specific ideas about stewardship at the next meeting on October 21st.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for October 20
Clergy Appreciation Month
Someone reminded me recently that October is Pastor Appreciation Month. I’d forgotten about this amid a major strategic planning initiative at the parish, sermon writing, liturgical planning, pastoral care, etc, etc.
Also because it’s the lamest thing going. Think Hallmark holiday for clergy but instead of Hallmark it was created by cheesy clergy supply houses. How do I know this? I sampled some of the gift items you can purchase for your pastor to show your appreciation (you can read the full post complete with photos here) ….
Of course if you really want to show your pastor/clergy/priest some appreciation, take a moment to share how his or her ministry has led you to a place of transformation or spiritual growth. Embrace Christian discipleship. Be a passionate follower of Jesus Christ. Start a new ministry. Reach out to someone in need. Lend an ear. Make a donation to a charity in his/her name like Episcopal Relief & Development. Or be passive aggressive about it and donate a pig through Heifer International….

Fun at the Blessing of the Animals
Thanks to all pets and people who participated in the Blessing of the Animals. Photos of the event and the prize winners are posted here on the parish Facebook page. You don’t have to be “on” Facebook to view the photos, but if you do use Facebook, why not “like” St. John’s? It’s a good way to keep in touch and see photos from parish activities.
Youth Worship Continues This Sunday
Youth worship, an alternative, age-appropriate worship experience for children and young people, meets most Sundays during the school year. Children gather in the Youth Worship chapel at 10:00 a.m. for music, prayers, Scripture and a reflection. They join their families in church at the peace. On the last Sunday of the month children participate in the regular church service with their families and are, of course, always welcome in church any Sunday if they, or their parents, prefer.
High School Youth Group Needs Paint Brushes
The high school youth group is painting their youth room and they could use a few more paintbrushes. If you have brushes you could lend them, it would be helpful. At least two inches wide (it’s a big room). The brushes will be returned. If you have questions or can help, be in touch with Shirley Reilly or Dee McManamy.
Clergy Conference
The Rector will be participating in clergy conference this year Monday and Tuesday, October 14-15. Bishop Lee is the conference leader.

Reflection for October 13
When the fundamental symbols expressed in an authentic liturgical act take root in our daily lives, those symbols have the power to touch the deepest levels of our humanity, leading us into a path of transformation. But if the symbols are engaged only on the surface, this potential for transformation is lost…. The consequence of this is a kind of Christianized veneer that is only skin deep.
The imperatives of the Gospel are proclaimed not only in the liturgical rites and their ritual symbols. Those imperatives, when they are truly heard and accepted, become embodied in the ways in which Christians live their lives. It is in our daily lives that the authenticity of our Christian faith meets its essential test. The significance of the liturgical act is not found merely in the performance of a religious routine, no matter how beautiful that routine may be. It is found when that act yields in us the spiritual fruit that it signifies (Louis Weil, Liturgical Sense).

Reflection for September 29
The scriptural word “angel” (Greek: angelos) means, literally, a messenger. Messengers from God can be visible or invisible, and may assume human or non-human forms. Christians have always felt themselves to be attended by healthful spirits—swift, powerful and enlightening. Those beneficent spirits are often depicted in Christian art in human form, with wings to signify their swiftness and spacelessness, with swords to signify their power, and with dazzling raiment to signify their ability to enlighten (Holy Women, Holy Men: Saint Michael and All Angels, September 29).

Reflection for September 22
In an act of sheer courage, or of Spirit-filled faith, King left his prepared speech when Mahalia Jackson, standing behind him, said, “Tell ‘em about the dream, Martin.” What followed was both a rhetorical tour de force and an illustration of the power of the Spirit, particularly for those of us who wouldn’t think of leaving our manuscripts even if Mahalia Jackson told us to. It was, in fact, a sermon. It convinced me that Christian faith led to involvement in the world not retreat from it, that the security, welfare and equal opportunity of all people were priorities for the God revealed in the Bible—and therefore priorities for the church (John M. Buchanan, “Converted in 1963,” Christian Century, September 18, 2013).

Parish Stewardship
Approval of Minutes from the June Meeting
Anne Edwards moved that the June minutes be approved. A vote was taken after a second from Gale Michael, and the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report for June and July
Debbi Huggett reported that collections always slow down in the summer, and this summer is no exception. They will be picking up again. There was a large office expense for toner. We made money on the Ice Cream Social in spite of buying two new tents. Nothing in the financial report is particularly out of line. Gale Michael made a motion to accept the report. Jim Whitfield seconded, and the motion passed.
The rector distributed copies of the second quarter Rector’s Discretionary Fund Report. There have been more contributions since Pastor Orr’s explanation of/appeal for funds. Audrey Ongman moved to accept the report and Mark Moxley seconded. The motion passed.
Information
Rector’s Report
Nursery Director Marilyn Enright has not been well, but her strength seems to be returning. It is unclear at present whether or not she will be returning to her position at St. John’s.
Pastor Orr continues in leadership positions for the Joliet Deanery and the South Suburban Ministerial Association.
Both independent diocesan conventions approved the reunion of the dioceses of Quincy and Chicago.
A diocesan block party is scheduled on Sunday afternoon, September 15th to celebrate the newly renovated diocesan center. Pastor Orr will put out sign-up sheets for those interested in attending and car-pooling.
The rector has ramped up ads in the diocesan website for our Christian Education Director position. She also has sent ads to seminaries.
Pastor Orr is tentatively scheduling her fourth week of vacation near Thanksgiving. She thanked everyone who helped keep St. John’s running during her summer vacation.
Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
There were no reports.
Upcoming Parish Events
The annual back-to-school blessing of the backpacks will be held during the 10:00 AM service on August 25th.
The Jubilation and Ministry Fair is planned for coffee hour on September 8th.
Bishop Lee will visit St. John’s on September 29th and will hold a forum at 9:00 AM. There will be a vestry event after the 10:00 AM service.
Discussion and Decisions
Trees
Pastor Orr received an estimate from Care of Trees to remove a dead spruce, a dying apple tree, and an infected ash from church property and to prune a sugar maple and a Norway maple at a total cost of $1,520. Steve Hofer moved that the proposal be accepted. Mark Moxley seconded, and the motion carried.
Preliminary Stewardship Conversation
Pastor Orr reminded members of the vestry that they are stewards of the parish.
Update on Outreach Conversations with Parishioners
Two suggestions were reported:
We should be giving more to the Rich Township food pantry, and We could contact a woman from Trinity Wall Street who runs a program that helps parishes connect with schools in need.
Review of Parish Calendar
The vestry received draft copies of the parish calendar. Pastor Orr drew attention to St. John’s Feast on January 4th and reminded everyone that this is a vestry-hosted event, and all should plan to help.
Update on Columbarium Expansion and Accessibility Work
There is no news on architectural plans. Steve Hofer has done some research on a simple vertical lift system to provide access to all three levels of the church. The cost is a fraction of what an elevator would cost. The system itself is less than $30,000. Another $40,000 to $50,000 would be needed for construction, electric, and plumbing work. Steve will attend the next Accessibility Sub-Committee meeting.
Closing
Following prayer, the meeting ended at 8:25 PM.
The next meeting will be held on September 16th.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Reflection for September 15
What put me off about church was that it was so like me – feeding me a steady diet of myself: my wants, my preferences, my music. It was quite “relevant.” I came to realize that I actually needed church to be UN-like me: to be transcendent. The Church is unconcerned with “relevance.” It cares not for my preferences. When I ask it to change it grins quietly and asks me to change instead. When one panics about something and accosts the clergy at the door, the chances are good the priest will say, “We have been in God’s presence in the liturgy. How about we enjoy that for a bit? Call me on Tuesday.”
The Church is maddeningly un-fearful. It is not subject to politics or fads. It does not do focus groups and market research. It is not trying to impress me, win me or woo me. Instead of bending to my whims, it seeks to conform me to the image of Christ through immersion in patterns: daily in the Scriptures, weekly in Sacramental feeding of the Thanksgiving meal of the family of God, and living out God-time in the Christian Year. As a man of flesh, these patterns marinate me in the Gospel, bringing forth flavors in my life I never imagined (Matt Marino, “Why I dropped church and joined The Church, thegospelside.com).

Reflection for September 8
There is a long and often ridiculous history of comparing baseball to a religion. Rule-bound, slow to change, cyclic, and timeless; an assembly of people presided over by men in funny outfits, who say what is safe and what is out; a space sealed-off from the rest of society, yet definitional to a national culture: the comparisons aren’t too difficult to make….
Religious phenomena have plenty of overlaps with other products of human culture, but the whole game of “but is it a religion?” is obnoxious at best. None of which changes the fact that, when Major League Baseball announced last week that it was planning to introduce instant replay to games, thereby allowing umpires to stop play after a difficult call and watch the whole thing again in slow-motion, all I could think, with a tinge of sadness, was that a new, especially virulent kind of fundamentalism had arrived in America’s First Church (Michael Schulson, “Baseball Literalism,” Killing the Buddha).

Reflection for September 1
I have been nourished by hundreds of Eucharists. Deep down, where I don't usually notice it, they have fed my soul in a steady, sustaining way. Sometimes they are so rich my heart longs to prostrate itself before the altar in sheer awe and adoration. At other times I practically keel over with boredom. But each celebration is a mysterious source of life and strength, and I cannot explain why that is and how it happens.
All I know is that without this ritual I am diminished. Without it I am not as well nourished, not as steady and strong of soul. It is my mainstay in a very basic way, and I hope all future generations know it as I have. Pray God it will be so (Laurie Gudim, “Take and eat,” posted on Episcopal Cafe).

Reflection for August 25
I always had a dream that when I am asked to give an accounting of my life to a high court, it will go like this: “So, empty your pockets. What have you got left of your life? Any dreams that were unfulfilled? Any unused talent that we gave you when you were born that you still have left? Any unsaid compliments or bits of love that you haven't spread around?” And I will answer, “I’ve nothing to return. I spent everything you gave me. I'm as naked as the day I was born.” (Erma Bombeck, Forever, Erma)

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - June 17, 2013
Formation
Evening Prayer and Thanksgivings & Prayer Requests
The vestry assembled in the church for evening prayer at 7:00 PM followed by offered prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.
Attendance
Present at the meeting were: the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Audrey Ongman; vestry members Candice Barrera, Bob Berner, Anne Edwards, Steve Hofer, Mark Moxley, Patti Pohrte, and Jim Whitfield; the treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and the clerk, Susan Marquis. The junior warden, Bill Bestow, and vestry members Greg Lawrence and Gale Michael were absent.
Parish Stewardship
Approval of Minutes from the May Meeting
Pastor Orr noticed two errors in the minutes. First, the vestry met in the undercroft for evening prayer rather than in the church. Second, The treasurer’s report showed a budget shortfall rather than debt. Audrey Ongman moved that the minutes be approved as corrected, and Steve Hofer seconded that motion. The motion passed. [The clerk submitted a corrected copy of the minutes to the rector.]
Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that revenues are pacing ahead of expectations; although a drop-off is expected, as usual, during summer vacations. We have caught up with recent repair expenses. The insurance increase this year was due to a billing procedure rather than a significant yearly increase. That is, the insurance company bills 35% of the total in the first quarter. The bills for the remaining quarters will be lower.
Information
Rector’s Report
Pastor Orr reminded the vestry that she will be on vacation for three weeks from July 16 th through August 6th. . During that time the wardens and the office manager will be in charge. Chuck Hensel will serve as supply priest for all three Sundays.
The rector expressed gratitude to our Diocesan Convention delegates for their recent work on reunification with the Diocese of Quincy.
Work has begun on a new acolyte composite photo.
As of the first Sunday in July, the 7:40 AM Sunday Morning Prayer service will be cancelled.
There are two trees on the church property that need to be removed: an apple tree in the back yard of the rectory and an evergreen outside of the education wing on the street side. The rector will get estimates for the work.
Pastor Orr expressed thanks for the work of Audrey Ongman and Mary Agnes Long who lead the Wednesday morning bible study class. The class has been suspended for the summer but will resume in September.
Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
There were no reports.
Upcoming Parish Events
The annual Community Ice Cream Social will be held on St. John’s south lawn on July 4th after the Flossmoor parade.
The annual Fall Jubilation and Ministry Fair will be held on September 8th.
Discussion and Decisions
Meeting with Barry Berg
On June 15th, Pastor Orr, Patti Pohrte, and Cyndie Knoll met with former parishioners Barry Berg and his sister, Patty Berg. They discussed repairs and changes to the outdoor altar area, which involves projects such as replacing stones that have degraded and possibly making plans to triple the columbarium space. The Bergs were involved in the original work and were grateful that we asked for their opinions just as we are grateful for their interest and input. Barry, who is an architect, will do some sketching and get back to us.
Accessibility
The Accessibility Sub-Committee has not met in the past month, although members have done some work independently. They hope to put together some information for the August vestry meeting. Steve Hofer noted that recently he had been in a church with nicer and newer chair lifts, which seemed to work better than what we have.
Outreach
Pastor Orr asked for reports from the vestry on what ideas about new outreach projects have emerged from vestry conversations with parishioners. No one had any input. This issue will be discussed again at the August meeting.
Closing
As ever, there will be no July vestry meeting. The treasurer will send out the June financial report by e-mail. The next meeting is on August 19th.

After prayer, the meeting ended at 8:00 PM.

Reflection for August 18
Vicars
Most of us church people know the word “vicar”; some even know it’s derived from a Latin word meaning “substitute.” No need to go into the ecclesiastical technicalities here. It’s just that the word came to mind as I read a recent piece in the newspaper on the enjoyment of other peoples’ dogs, one of my own guilty pleasures….
While I no longer share my life and home with a dog, I recall the many times the inconvenience of walking a canine companion began in begrudging resentment but culminated in laughter, conversation and joy shared among old friends or taken up with new acquaintances along the way.
I’ve come to appreciate the mediating ministry of these four-legged vicars who work the neighborhood like we priests once ministered to anyone and everyone within the village parish bounds. These parsons with paws have frequently fulfilled the role of the host whose gracious introduction of strangers helps us over that awkward threshold into personal relationship, or of the pastor whose brief encounter in a day’s rounds could heal a hurting heart, or change a life. Except in the rare instance of malice or menace, an encounter with a dog, even in passing, can evoke a smile in me and, in turn, shift my mood into the gears of joy and gratitude.
That’s efficacious spiritual direction. And it’s free. Just go for a walk.

The Transfiguration of Our Lord (August 6)
O God, who on the holy mount revealed to chosen witnesses your well-beloved Son, wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistening: Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty; who with you, O Father, and you, O Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Vocation
Vocation has to do with recognizing life as a gift and honoring the gift in living…. In the Gospel, vocation means being a human being, now, and being neither more, nor less, than a human being now. And, thus, each and every decision, whether it seems great or small, whether obviously or subtly a moral problem, becomes and is a vocational event, secreting, as it were, the very issue of existence (William Stringfellow, A Second Birthday).

Renewable Energy
Energy, William Blake said, is eternal delight. But Blake was wrong; energy is a youthful, and therefore transient and corruptible, delight. Eternal delight reveals itself not when we possess energy in natural abundance, but when our energy is depleted and then mysteriously renewed by a source outside ourselves (Carol Zaleski, “Renewable energy: On the other side of mortal travail, Christian Century, November 30, 2004).

A Litany for our National Life
Almighty God, giver of all good things: We thank you for the natural majesty and beauty of this land. They restore us, though we often destroy them. Heal us.
We thank you for the great resources of this nation. They make us rich, though we often exploit them. Forgive us.
We thank you for the men and women who have made this country strong. They are models for us, though we often fall short of them. Inspire us.
We thank you for the torch of liberty which has been lit in this land. It has drawn people from every nation, though we have often hidden from its light. Enlighten us.
We thank you for the faith we have inherited in all its rich variety. It sustains our life, though we have been faithless again and again. Renew us.
Help us, O Lord, to finish the good work here begun. Strengthen our efforts to blot out ignorance and prejudice, and to abolish poverty and crime. And hasten the day when all our people, with many voices in one united chorus, will glorify your holy Name. Amen.

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor children’s parade, Thursday, July 4. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.; we begin serving around 10:15 a.m. Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks. Children’s activities, including a Story Teller will be provided. Hot dogs and dessert are available for purchase. (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)
Sunday Morning Prayer to End in July
Beginning next Sunday, July 7, St. John’s will no longer offer Morning Prayer at 7:40 a.m. on Sundays. Morning Prayer is a wonderful part of our Anglican worship tradition, but it was always intended, as part of the Daily Office, for daily use by individuals or communities like monastic communities or religious schools that meet daily for corporate prayer. The custom of parishes using Morning Prayer on Sundays has varied in form and frequency across time and in different areas. It does not seem to be meeting a broad need at St. John’s at this time.

From Bishop Lee
“As a Christian, I believe that our society needs all the sources and signs of grace that we can get. As a citizen of the United States, I believe in equal protection under the law. Today’s Supreme Court rulings bring us closer to both goals and renews the urgency for Illinois to enact civil marriage equality.” (Read Bishop Lee’s full statement on marriage equality and the Supreme Court rulings here.)

The Fourth of July is Almost Here!
Every year individuals and families from the broader Flossmoor community attend St. John’s Fourth of July ice cream social. We always offer special entertainment for kids. This year, there will be a Story Teller. We seek donations from parishioners to help defray the costs of providing this entertainment. You can help us offer this event to the community. Look for red, white and blue donation envelopes around the church. You may place your donation in the offering plate or drop it off at the parish office.
Notes on Recycling
The church has recently received new receptacles for recycling. They are brown rollable totes. The blue totes are for yard waste only. The commercial dumpster is for trash. Recycling guidelines are posted in the kitchen. Note, for example, that paper towels, used paper plates, paper cups or any paper/cardboard soiled with food are not recyclable. Plastic silverware and aluminum foil are also not accepted for recycling. One more reminder: The rectory backyard is never the pathway to the dumpsters. Thank you to everyone throughout the year who helps in the kitchen and with event clean up!
Celebrating Rabbi Ellen Dreyfus
A luncheon this Sunday celebrates the retirement of Rabbi Ellen Dreyfus, who has served as a leader within the Jewish and broader faith community of the south suburbs for almost three decades. She served as rabbi at Congregation Beth Shalom in Park Forest and then at the new, merged congregation of B’nai Yehuda Beth Shalom in Homewood. She is past-President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the global organization of Reform rabbis. She has also been active, including time as president, of the local South Suburban Ministerial Association. Mazel Tov.

A Stewardship Issue
“As the climate warms, moisture and precipitation levels are changing, with wet areas becoming wetter and dry areas becoming drier, “ the [Union of Concerned Scientists] reports. “Higher spring and summer temperatures and earlier spring snow-melt typically cause soils to be drier for longer, increasing the likelihood of drought and a longer wildfire season, particularly in the western Untied States. These hot, dry conditions also increase the likelihood that, once wildfires are started by lightning strikes or human error, they will be more intense and long-burning.”
To those tasked with preventing and fighting wildfires, climate change has become a major challenge.
“On average, wildfires burn twice as many acres each year as compared to 40 years ago. Last year, the fires were massive in size, coinciding with increased temperatures and early snow melt in the West,” US Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in testimony last week. “The largest issue we now face is how to adapt our management to anticipate climate change impacts and to mitigate their potential effects.” (“Colorado fire: Is global warming one of the culprits?” The Christian Science Monitor online, June 15, 2013).

Minutes of Vestry Meeting - May 20, 2013
Formation
Evening Prayer and Thanksgivings & Prayer Requests
The vestry assembled in the undercroft meeting room for evening prayer at 7:00 PM followed by offered prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.
Attendance
Present at the meeting were: the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Audrey Ongman; the junior warden, Bill Bestow; vestry members Candice Barrera, Bob Berner, Anne Edwards, Greg Lawrence, Gale Michael, Patti Pohrte, and Jim Whitfield; the treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and the clerk, Susan Marquis. Vestry members Steve Hofer and Mark Moxley were absent.
Parish Stewardship
Approval of minutes from April Meeting
Anne Edwards moved to approve the April minutes. Gale Michael seconded, and the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that parish collections are about $4,700 higher than expected, but the usual drop in summer collections may balance this out. Insurance premiums were surprising. After budgeting for a 6% increase, the real increase was 36% for our property and liability insurance. This may result in a $5,000 budget shortfall at the end of the year. Gale Michael made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report, and Patti Pohrte seconded. The motion was approved.
Information
Rector’s Report
--Pastor Orr thanked the vestry for participating in the recent retreat, and she thanked Sunday School and Adult Education teachers and the nursery director for their work over the year.
--Pastor Orr also thanked the Sunday School children led by Tracie Moxley for their hosting of Pentecost coffee hour, and celebrated the input of Debbi Huggett, Susan Marquis, and Donna Blackburn who helped the rector decorate the nave and sanctuary for the Day of Pentecost.
--The rector does not yet have any definite plans for a sabbatical.
--Since the office is less busy in the summer than throughout the rest of the year, office hours will be reduced to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
--Pastor Orr and Greg Lawrence have been working on acolyte training.
--The upgrade on the organ is complete or nearly complete. Music Director Michael Soto may present a recital in the context of evensong.
--Recent parish newcomers include Hans and Dana Zigmund and their sons Oliver, Owen, and Ted; Stuart and Alice Creason; and Sarah Young.
Wardens’ Reports and/or reports from parish organizations
Junior Warden Bill Bestow noted that Bill and Ann Moser had given him samples of visitor pew cards from a church they had attended.
Upcoming parish events
Graduating high school seniors will be honored during the 10:00 AM service on May 26th.
The annual parish picnic will be held the following week on Sunday, June 2nd.
Discussion and Decisions
Accessibility Task Force
The group has not met recently but will meet in anticipation of an early June meeting with architect Barry Berg.
Outreach Conversations with Parishioners
At this year’s vestry retreat the vestry planned to talk with parishioners about what outreach they do already and what types of outreach might blossom into something larger if the parish becomes involved. There were only a few responses reported, those being work with Juvenile Diabetes, the South Suburban Humane Society, and the Boy Scouts.
Closing
After prayer, the meeting ended at 8:05 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for June 17th.
