Reflection for December 28

When the “Spirit of Christmas” is only about human nature, even human nature at its most noble, its most generous, its most hopeful… when the “Spirit of Christmas” is only about human nature, it is fleeting…. When we hang onto the gifts that God gives this night, then the Christmas spirit becomes more than fleeting acts of holiday goodwill. The true spirit of Christmas becomes a way of life. The true spirit of Christmas is the Christian life. Year round. Life shared with God. Christmas spirit is the Christian life (Christmas Eve sermon).

Reflection for December 21

She struck the angel Gabriel as hardly old enough to have a child at all, let alone this child, but he’d been entrusted with a message to give her, and he gave it.

He told her what the child was to be named, and who he was to be, and something about the mystery that was to come upon her. “You mustn’t be afraid, Mary,” he said.

As he said it, he only hoped she wouldn’t notice that beneath the great, golden wings he himself was trembling with fear to think that the whole future of creation hung now on the answer of a girl (Frederick Buechner, Peculiar Treasures; illustrations by Katherine A. Buechner).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - November 17, 2014

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry assembled in the church for evening prayer at 7:00 PM followed by offered prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.

Attendance
All were present at the meeting: the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden Bill Bestow; the junior warden, Diane Walsh-Madden; vestry members Nichole Dailor, Bob DeOliveira, Steve Hofer, Gale Michael, Mark Moxley, Patti Pohrte, Ted Stone, Jim Whitfield, and Hans Zigmund; the treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and the clerk, Susan Marquis.

Stewardship

Minutes
Gale Michael moved to accept the minutes from the September meeting. Nichole Dailor seconded, and the motion was passed.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett had no additions to the information and report that she sent out by e-mail. In response to a question, Debbi explained that the increase in the Building Maintenance Fund was a correction of funds that had been misclassified. A small math error also was noted. Funds will need to be moved from Money Market investments to the checking account in order to cover approximately $46,000 in lift costs. Bill Bestow moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report pending corrections, and Bob DeOliveira seconded. The motion was approved.

Information

Rector’s Report
--Professional painting for the lift project was estimated at $8,000. So far, in doing the project ourselves, we have spent $200 for paint and will have to spend just a little more for additional paint. We will be hiring a professional to stain the doors on all three levels. The rector has one recommendation for a bid and needs at least one more.
--The Village of Flossmoor is newly strict about fire inspections. In a recent check of the church, three problems stood out: ceiling tile damage, the need for a functioning emergency sign, and a fire alarm system test.
--The church website is up and running and has garnered positive feedback. Pastor Orr passed around a card for vestry members to sign to thank Jordan Ramsland for setting up the website.
--Thanks to Loaves and Fishes volunteers for the recent, labor-intensive, turkey pot luck.
--Pastor Orr will take some time off to make up for the many Tuesdays that she has been at church during the duration of the lift project.
--Replacement of church lighting is continuing.

Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
--Bill Bestow asked if the community garden project would be continued next year. Pastor Orr said she expects that it will and that she was pleased with the results. Produce went to the Rich Township food pantry and to the food pantry at St. Clement’s in Harvey.
--Diane Walsh-Madden expressed thanks to the rector for being here and working on the lift project.

Upcoming Events
--Diocesan Convention on November 21st and 22nd
--Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on November 26th at 7:30 PM at Flossmoor Community Church
--St. John’s Thanksgiving service on November 27th at 10:00 AM
--Advent wreath making on November 30th from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM
--Cookie Walk on November 6th from 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM

Discussions and Decisions

--The machinery parts have been delivered, and the lift company will do the installation.
--Steve Hofer researched outdoor handicapped access signage and reported that we can purchase two window signs and a sign on a stake for less than $30.
--Ted Stone noted that there were some items and labor charges included in the proposal that were not needed, and some of the work that has been done needs some fine-tuning. He also wondered if the doorway downstairs that goes into the lift area is large enough for a wheelchair. Jim Whitfield commented that the lift company specs and listed materials were wrong, causing us to pay for an extra day’s labor. Pastor Orr replied that the contractors are aware of the problems. She thanked Ted and Jim and asked for their help in taking note of these things on a final walk-through.

--Bill Bestow thanked Jim Whitfield for keeping the project going and on schedule.

Pledge Drive
Pastor Orr thanked those who spoke in church and all who submitted written comments regarding pledging.

Nominating Committee
A committee was chosen to nominate wardens and vestry members for the year 2015. As always, the committee consists of the wardens and one vestry member from each year’s group, chosen by drawing straws. The committee this year will consist of Bill Bestow, Diane Walsh-Madden, Gale Michael, Jim Whitfield, and Ted Stone. The rector will be an ex-officio member.

The Feast
Each year, on the first Saturday of January, the vestry presents a feast for parish members and friends to celebrate the feast of St. John the Evangelist. It is a high priority for vestry participation. This year, we will dedicate the lift, and the overall theme will be “Lift Up Your Hearts.” Gale Michael, Nichole Dailor, Debbi Huggett, and Susan Marquis volunteered to do the initial event planning.

Closing

Following prayer, the meeting closed at 8:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

How Many Episcopalians does it take to drink three gallons of cocoa?
Apparently, it takes thirty-two. That’s how many people gathered December 7th for caroling for canned goods and complete cocoa consumption. Great success on both fronts: We collected more than 80 pounds of food for the Rich Township Food Pantry. Sincere thanks to our youth for their prep work and for bringing along friends and family. Thank you to other parishioners who joined us and brought friends and family, too. Finally, many thanks to the residents of Bruce Avenue who gave so generously.

High School Youth Group
Good luck on semester finals, and enjoy your break. Our meetings will resume in February.

Reflection for December 14

Children play a game called "Hide-and-Seek" in which everyone hides and tries not to get caught, but eventually, when the game goes as it should, everyone gets found. The game is interesting from a psychological point of view because "hiding" is not really very much fun. If you ask most children, "Do you want to sit somewhere all by yourself and keep very quiet for a long time?" you will not get many takers. What's fun about "Hide-and-Seek” is not hiding, but getting found. Everybody likes to be found.

So, when Advent comes around every year, we are reminded that God is coming to find us. We have our ways of hiding. But on Advent 2, when John the Baptist shouts, "Prepare the way of the Lord!" it is as though God has just called, "Ready or not, here I come!" And we remember: this is the God who always finds us (Mark Allan Powell, www.workingpreacher.org).

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Reflection for November 23

The war on leisure, after all, extends beyond Sunday. Commerce and work, and the political power that gathers around then, are eroding the concept of Sabbath—of divinely ordained rest—in every aspect of life (Benjamin J. Dueholm, “The war against rest: Sabbath piety and Sabbath politics”; Christian Century, November 26, 2014).

Rector’s Report
The church web page is almost ready to go online publicly, and the vestry should look at it. Its primary audience is expected to be visitors, although there is information for parishioners as well. Pastor Orr expressed thanks to Jordan Ramsland for his huge investment of time and commitment in re-doing the website.  Following a discussion about the best way to keep acolyte parents updated on the acolyte schedule and frequent changes to that schedule, the vestry agreed that sending e-mails would be most preferable for both the office and the parents.

Diane Walsh-Madden thanked the acolyte moms for their flexibility in changing the serving schedule when commitment conflicts arise. She also thanked Jim Whitfield for all of the work he has been doing on the lift project.

November 9th – Loaves and Fishes potluck after the 10:00 AM service

Discussion and Decisions

Lift Project Update
Pastor Orr asked the vestry to think about a way to formally launch the new lift. She also reminded the vestry that they approved doing the painting in order to save money that otherwise would go to hired painters. The dates for painting are as yet unknown. Overall, the project is moving along on schedule.
Steve Hofer moved that handicapped access signs be placed in the outdoor bulletin board on Park Avenue and on the entrances to the church. Gale Michael seconded the motion, and it was approved. Steve will research signage.

Annual Pledge Campaign
The discussion included the following ideas regarding the importance of pledging: We should invite people to be generous. Pastor Orr remembered a parishioner in a former church who said, “Lights and salaries don’t have anything to do with it. This is what I need to do because of who I am.” All kinds of ministries exist because this parish exists. Ministry is God’s work. Pledging is not the same as giving to charity. The church is different because we are living the ministry we are called to do in taking care of one another. We validate each other through ministry.
The discussion then moved to deciding how to communicate these ideas to the parish, and how to cherish and celebrate the spiritual value of St. John’s. The vestry decided on a slogan, “Count your blessings. Share your blessings,” with perhaps another to-be-determined line added at the end. Vestry members will witness the importance of pledging by speaking for two-to-three minutes during the Sunday services and by submitting a brief written paragraph to be published in the “e-vangelist.” The rector will prepare a mailing that includes a cover letter along with an information sheet and pledge card.
The speaker schedule is as follows:
October 23rd – Patti Pohrte
November 9th – Jim Whitfield
November 16th – Steve Hofer at 8:00 AM and Bob DeOliveira at 10:00 AM.
The written paragraphs will appear in the “e-vangelist” on the following dates:
For October 26th – Nichole Dailor, Patti Pohrte, and Diane Walsh-Madden
For November 9th – Bill Bestow, Steve Hofer, Ted Stone, and Jim Whitfield
For November 16th – Bob DeOliveira, Gale Michael, Mark Moxley, and Hans Zigmund
Pledge Sunday is November 23rd.

Closing
The meeting ended with prayer at 9:20 PM.

Susan Marquis

To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purpose of God (William Temple, Nature, Man and God).

The best homemade cocoa will be served. Come do your part!

Reflection for November 2

This ‘November Triduum’ of All Hallows’ Even, All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days hold for us the same stark reality as does the Easter Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter: that death is real. It may come in the guise of cute children dressed up in all manner of costumes, begging candy from you or threatening tricks, but our pre-Christian and Christian ancestors in the faith would recognize Hallowe’en as that night when you stared at, and stared down, death (Br. James Koester, SSJE, “Brother – Give Us A Word”).

Minutes
It was suggested that the minutes be amended to state correctly that both of the lift approval motions, that is, both the motion for the lift purchase and the motion for the contractor’s bid, contained within the motions the direction that if additional funds are needed, the vestry must approve those funds. Steve Hofer moved that the minutes be approved as corrected, and Bob DeOliveira seconded. The motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report
The treasurer noted misquotes in the financial report. The amount of $10,960, which was charged in error to the building maintenance fund will be reclassified to the memorial fund, and $2,625.31 for radiator repair, which was charged in error to the operating fund, will be reclassified against the building reserve fund. Hans Zigmund moved to accept the treasurer’s report subject to the revisions stated by the treasurer. After a second by Diane Walsh-Madden, the motion passed.

Discussions and Decisions

Diocesan Convention
A slate of candidates to represent St. John’s at the upcoming Diocesan Convention was presented. They are Debbi Huggett, Gale Michael, and Sue O’Brien as delegates, and Don Rubins and Doris Sheffer as alternates. Bill Bestow made a motion to accept the slate, and Mark Moxley seconded. The motion passed.

Pledge Campaign
Discussion on this year’s pledge campaign will take place at next month’s vestry meeting.

Lift Project
--Derrek Pathmann reported that they have discovered that there is electrical conduit where the slab must be cut for the lift. He will get a price in the next couple of days for the work that needs to be done to solve this problem.
--Pastor Orr announced that Jim Whitfield and Sailor Electrical offered a proposed contract for the electrical work that will significantly reduce the cost of the project to about $100,000.
--Pastor Orr raised the issue of how to deal with project questions that come up between vestry meetings. After discussion, Hans Zigmund moved that the vestry will empower the rector and the wardens to make day-to-day decisions and project financial decisions up to a limit of $10,000, either as a single cost or an aggregate amount. If the decisions involve more than $10,000, the vestry will be consulted. The vestry will be kept informed of any decisions that occur between meetings. After a second by Mark Moxley the motion was approved.
--Justin Pathmann reported that he expects the building permit to be issued within days, and Dan Pohrte estimated that the installation might be completed in six-to-eight weeks.
--Bill Bestow made a motion to approve a contract with Sailor Electrical for $4,750. Hans Zigmund seconded, and the motion passed with one abstention.

Closing
At 8:20 PM the meeting ended with prayer. The next vestry meeting will be held on October 20th.

Reflection for October 19

All I know is that there is eventually a major equivalence between you and the God you worship. If you are a merciful, forgiving person, then I know you’ve met the real God. If you are narrow, stingy, and fearful, then you are worshiping something that is not God, probably some form of yourself (Richard Rohr).

Reflection for October 12

The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the oppressor. It first does something to the hearts and souls of those committed to it. It gives them new self-respect; it calls up resources of strength and courage they did not know they had (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., cited at gratefulness.org, “Word for the Day”).

Reflection for October 5

Where is the church that lives as if it really is God’s unexpected answer to what’s wrong with the world? The church that, in the end, wins through suffering witness and love? The church that shares an open table and tries breathlessly to keep up with the movements of the risen Christ? The church that dares to be incomprehensible to the world because it believes Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection are true? That church is more ubiquitous than we knew (Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon, in The Christian Century, September 22, 2014, reflecting on the 25th anniversary of the publication of their book Resident Aliens).

Reflection for September 28

John Bingham of the Telegraph writes: “Britain’s most senior churchman, who is effectively the leader of almost 800 million Anglicans worldwide admitted that there are moments when he asks himself “Is there a God?” and “Where is God?” Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury said, “The other day I was praying over something as I was running and I ended up saying to God ‘Look this is all very well but isn’t it about time you did something – if you’re there’ – which is probably not what the Archbishop of Canterbury should say” (The original post at Episcopal Cafe is HERE; an interesting follow up is HERE).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - August 18, 2014

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests
The vestry assembled in the church for evening prayer at 7:00 PM followed by offered prayers of thanksgiving and intercession.

Attendance
Present at the meeting were the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Bill Bestow; the junior warden, Diane Walsh-Madden; vestry members Nichole Dailor, Bob DeOliveira, Steve Hofer, Gale Michael, Patti Pohrte, Ted Stone, Jim Whitfield, and Hans Zigmund; and the clerk, Susan Marquis. Vestry member Mark Moxley and the treasurer, Debbi Huggett, were absent. Two guests were present at the meeting, Dan Pohrte and Sebastian Koprowski, both of whom are architects from Product Architecture Design.

Stewardship

Minutes
After a motion by Bill Bestow and a second by Gale Michael, the vestry approved the minutes from the June 16th meeting.

Treasurer’s Report
Gale Michael moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented. Jim Whitfield seconded, and the motion passed.

Rector’s Discretionary Account
Prior to the meeting, Pastor Orr distributed to the vestry, a copy of the Rector’s Discretionary Account Report for the second quarter of 2014. Hans Zigmund moved to accept the report followed by a second from Bob DeOliveira. The motion was approved.

Information

Rector’s Report
--Pastor Orr expressed thanks to the senior warden for overseeing the parish while she was on vacation.
--A thank you note from the Diocese regarding the parish contribution to Places of Grace and Gladness was received and shared with the vestry.

Wardens’ Reports and/or Reports from Parish Organizations
Bill Bestow reported that all of the sidewalk coach lamps have been repaired and are functioning thanks to the work of Jim Whitfield and Harold Keene.

Upcoming Parish Events
--The annual Blessing of the Backpacks, which marks the beginning of the new school year, will be held during the 10 AM service on August 24th.
--The annual Ministry Fair, during which parish organizations have displays and representatives to explain their ministries and offer ministry opportunities to parishioners, is scheduled during coffee hour on September 7th.

Discussions and Decisions

Lighting Project
Most of the materials needed for new lighting in the sanctuary are here. Jim Whitfield and his crew will install the lights in the upcoming few weeks. A donor has covered the $1,500 to $2,000 expense.

Radiator Work
The radiator valve work in the education wing has been completed. The approximately $2,600 expense has not yet shown up in the financial reports.

Lift Project
Architect Dan Pohrte described the differences in lifts based on their types of drives and provided a handout that compared hydraulic versus screw drives. The hydraulic drive is a bit faster, but its main advantage is its ability to move the platform both up and down using an auxiliary battery power system in the event of a power outage. The two types are similar in price, the hydraulic being about $500 more.

Pastor Orr reported that she checked with the treasurer about funding, and found that the project could be largely paid for through memorial and accessibility funds. We also have other undesignated reserves, or we may be able to supplement with some congregational involvement. The cost of the lift plus construction costs appears now to be about $110,000.

Following a discussion, Jim Whitfield made a motion to accept the proposal for the hydraulic lift [submitted by Chicago Elevator & Lift, Inc.]. Steve Hofer seconded. Hans Zigmund amended the motion to state that the project would first be paid for through the memorial fund and secondly through the accessibility fund with any additional costs to be approved by the vestry. The motion passed.

Mr. Pohrte submitted requests for contractors’ bids, and two bids came in. Both bids were higher than anticipated, with one bid significantly higher.

At the vestry’s request, he will check to see if there are any parts of the bids that could be self-managed, that is, things that parishioners could do such as painting in order to cut costs.

Steve Hofer made a motion that we move forward with the Pathmann Construction Management proposal [which was the lower of the two bids we received from contractors] with the final contract negotiated to include the option of some self-managed work to be done by St. John’s, with any additional costs to be approved by the vestry, and with the work to be paid first from St. John’s memorial fund, and then from the accessibility fund. After a second by Diane Walsh-Madden, the motion was approved.

Steve Hofer volunteered to announce the lift project progress to the parish at the 8:00 AM service next Sunday, and Bill Bestow will make the announcement at the 10 AM service.

Closing
The meeting ended at 8:55 PM with prayer. The next vestry meeting is scheduled for September 15th.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis

With the exception of the March selection, all titles are available through the public library system. The discussions are always fun, and we’d love to have you join us.

Reflection for September 14

Wishful Thinking

Christianity is mainly wishful thinking. Even the part about Judgment and Hell reflects the wish that somewhere the score is being kept.

Dreams are wishful thinking. Children playing at being grow-ups is wishful thinking. Interplanetary travel is wishful thinking.

Sometimes wishing is the wings the truth comes on.

Sometimes the truth is what sets us wishing for it (Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking).

Reflection for September 7

The Practice of Pronouncing Blessings

There remain a great many people who excuse themselves when asked to pronounce a formal blessing. They are not qualified, they say. They are not good with words. They would rather jump off a high diving board than try to say something holy in front of a bunch of other people. My guess is that even if you asked them to bless something in private—thereby separating the fear of public speaking from the fear of pronouncing a blessing—they would still demur. If you are one of those people, then only you know why. All I can tell you is how much the world needs you to reconsider (Barbara Brown Taylor, An Altar in the World).

Reflection for August 31

The Practice of Walking on the Earth

Not everyone is able to walk, but most people can, which makes walking one of the most easily available spiritual practices of all. All it takes is the decision to walk with some awareness, both of who you are and what you are doing. Where you are going is not as important, however counterintuitive that may seem. To detach the walking from the destination is in fact one of the best ways to recognize the altars you are passing right by all the time. Most of us spend so much time thinking about where we have been or where we are supposed to be going that we have a hard time recognizing where we actually are. When someone asks us where we want to be in our lives, the last thing that occurs to us to look down at our feet and say, “Here, I guess, since this is where I am” (Barbara Brown Taylor, An Altar in the World).

Vestry members Nichole Dailor and Bob DeOliveira were absent.
Two guests were present at the meeting, Sebastian Koprowski and Jim Lonergan, both of whom are architects from Product Architecture Design.

Stewardship

Minutes
Pastor Orr suggested that the minutes from May be amended regarding the motion to pay for the radiator work from the reserve fund. The addition of the parenthetical phrase “(rather than from the maintenance fund as an expense item)” will make the intent of the motion clearer to those who read the minutes in the future. Gale Michael moved that the minutes be accepted as amended. After a second by Patti Pohrte the motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that May was a good month for collections.
The recent tuckpointing project has been paid for from the Building Maintenance Fund reserve.
St. John’s donated $520 to the diocesan Places of Grace and Gladness fund drive.
The offering from Michael Soto’s June 8th concert provided $500 for The Night Ministry.

--We will be getting new lighting in the sanctuary. A private donor will cover most, if not all, of the costs. There will be new tracks with both spotlights and floodlights that will be soft-colored, dimmable LEDs. Hans Zigmund made a motion that we move forward with the lighting project, and Bill Bestow seconded. The motion passed.

Discussion and Decisions

Accessibility Project
--The vestry took a walking tour of the three levels of the building where the lift is proposed to be installed, while the architects described the work that would be done, clarified the architectural drawings, and answered questions. Once back in the meeting room, Gale Michael made a motion to approve the project plan as presented. Diane Walsh-Madden seconded, and the motion passed.
--The architects will fine-tune the project as it progresses and will solicit bids for a contractor to oversee the work.
--In discussion the vestry decided to make the project drawings and photos available in the undercroft for the parish to see. Gale Michael volunteered to make an announcement about the progress of the project during the 8:00 AM service next Sunday, and Bill Bestow will do the same at the 10:00 AM service.

If this affects your normal route to St. John’s, please find an alternate route and allow extra time. The “recommended detour” is 183rd Street, via Governor’s or Dixie Highway.

Reflection for August 17

For the Beginning of a New School Year

Holy God, as we begin a new school year, we ask you to: Give us your wisdom as we make decisions for our future; Give us your compassion in our relationships with family and friends; Give us your safety when we feel vulnerable or hurt; Give us your courage when anxieties and insecurities take control; Give us your grace in all that we do.

O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges and universities, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery and the pursuit of wisdom; grant that those who teach and those who learn my find you to be the source of all truth. Amen (Adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, A New Zealand Prayer Book and Call on Me by EYC Arkansas).

Ice Cream Social Thank You
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the Ice Cream Social by scooping ice cream, cutting watermelon, setting up tents and tables, arranging flowers, pouring lemonade and iced tea, serving ice cream, lemonade and iced tea, grilling hot dogs, selling food, helping the balloon ladies, greeting the community, attending, cleaning up, donating to the entertainment, and most importantly, praying for good weather. The weather was glorious and attendance was good. This event would not work as well if all of you didn’t support it. THANK YOU!!!

Wednesday Healing Service
For the next three Wednesdays, the Wednesday morning healing service will be Morning Prayer with special prayers for healing. The Holy Eucharist will resume August 6.

A Hard Silence
Arvo Pärt is an Estonian composer known for writing contemplative music and for his love of bells and silence. In an interview, Pärt said that “silence must be approached with a feeling of awe. And when we speak about silence, we must keep in mind that it has two different wings, so to speak. Silence can be both that which is outside of us and that which is inside a person. The silence of our soul, which isn’t even affected by external distractions, is actually more crucial but more difficult to achieve” (NPR, June 2; Christian Century, July 9, 2014).

More next week, but thank you to everyone who has helped out with the ice cream social.

Reflection for July 6

Declaration of Dependence

One of the things that I am always reminded of when I read the Declaration of Independence is that the title of this document reveals only half of the story. Independence from Britain is clearly asserted, but the writing goes further, spelling out exactly what this new experiment in democracy would be dependent upon. This document is also a "declaration of dependence" in that it clearly states its reliance on certain core beliefs and values… The writers make it clear throughout the document that freedom is dependent upon equality and the right to create a fulfilling life.

I find this assertion of core beliefs and values inspiring, because we live in a time when it seems many people can tell you more easily what they don't believe in than what they do believe in. We live in a time when people define themselves more by what they are independent from than what they are dependent upon. This, of course, is natural when a person is questioning beliefs they have held and are in a period of transition, but I sense that many people end up getting stuck in this ‘in between’ stage, thus having a hard time articulating the core beliefs and values that their lives are built upon (The Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner, The Living Compass Wellness Initiative, July 4, 2014).

Blue Jean Sunday – This Sunday
Please wear your gardening clothes, bring a rake or clippers, and stay after church this Sunday, June 29, to help with landscape work. Everything is growing well and we would like the grounds to look their best for the July 4th Ice Cream Social.

The Fourth of July Ice Cream Social
St. John’s Old Time Community Fourth of July Ice Cream Social begins after the Flossmoor Children’s Parade, Friday, July 4. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m.; we begin serving around 10:15 a.m. Our clowns, Skiddles and Strawberry will be twisting balloons into all sorts of fun shapes. Come enjoy free ice cream and cool drinks. Hot dogs and cookies are available for purchase. (Financial contributions to help underwrite the event are still welcome.)

“Like” St. John’s on Facebook
If you use Facebook, have you “liked” St. John’s? Search for St. John the Evangelist, Flossmoor. Photos of recent events (like the Ice Cream Social) are typically posted right after the event. There are also event reminders and other posts about parish activities. For example: A recent post and photo highlighted the newly replaced carriage lights along the sidewalk. Another one showed the altar guild burning this year’s palms to be used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. The newest photo album shows the food garden being built and planted. And remember, when you “like” or “share” St. John’s posts, you are spreading the word about the life of the parish. Evangelism couldn’t be easier!

It takes practice

My eight-year-old grandson Alex’s Presbyterian church also understands the formative importance of practices. His mother helps with communion which is celebrated by intinction. Alex helps by holding the basket of bread and saying to each worshiper, “The bread of life.” His mother offers the cup and says, “The cup of salvation.”

One Sunday they were assigned to take the elements to the people sitting in the balcony. As Susan climbed the balcony stairs she realized that Alex was not following her. She turned around and saw him at the bottom of the stairs. “What are you doing, Alex?” she asked. He gave an answer that’s packed with theological and sacramental significance. He said, “I’m eating the bread of life. I’m hungry” (John M. Buchanan, “It takes practice,” The Christian Century, June 25, 2014).

For the Good Use of Leisure
O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (Book of Common Prayer, p. 825).

Minutes of the Vestry Meeting - May 19, 2014

Formation

Evening Prayer and Thanksgiving & Prayer Requests

Attendance
Present at the meeting were the rector, Kristin Orr; the senior warden, Bill Bestow; the junior warden, Diane Walsh-Madden; vestry members Nichole Dailor, Bob DeOliveira, Steve Hofer, Gale Michael, Mark Moxley, Patti Pohrte, Ted Stone, and Jim Whitfield; the treasurer, Debbi Huggett; and the clerk, Susan Marquis. Vestry member Hans Zigmund was absent.

Stewardship

Minutes
Bill Bestow made a motion to accept the minutes from the April 21st vestry meeting. Diane Walsh-Madden seconded, and the motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report
Debbi Huggett reported that there was nothing particularly worrying in the budget. Gale Michael moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report. After a second by Mark Moxley, the motion was approved.
The recently completed tuckpointing on the chimney above the education wing involved replacing about 90 bricks, which was about half of the chimney. The total cost was $1,895. Bob DeOliveira presented a motion to pay for the tuckpointing from the reserve fund (rather than as an expense item). Patti Pohrte seconded, and the motion passed.

Rector’s Discretionary Fund Report
Prior to the meeting Pastor Orr distributed to the vestry copies of the Rector’s Discretionary Account Report for the first quarter of 2014. This quarter reflects the annual $500. parish budget contribution. Bill Bestow moved to accept the report as presented, and Gale Michael seconded. The motion was approved.

Discussion and Decisions

Progress Report on Accessibility Project
--Pastor Orr forwarded an email to the vestry describing a working schedule for the lift project. The on-site measurements have been completed, and an electrical engineer is coming out this week to evaluate electrical systems. The rector will send email updates as progress occurs. It looks like the bid acceptance will happen in August. We may be able to have a functional lift in place by the end of the year.
--Funding can come from a combination of money brought from Christ the King church, from funds designated for accessibility, from memorial funds, and from undesignated reserve. A campaign to raise a certain amount of money also can be considered.
--The treasurer will create an accessibility project line in the budget.
--A discussion ensued about how to convey to the parish that the accessibility project is moving forward. Steve Hofer suggested that the “e-vangelist” contain news about the project under the title, “Uplifting Update.” Junior Warden Diane Walsh-Madden will make an announcement in church about the project.

Miscellaneous Building Issues
The radiators in the education wing do not function in that the temperature is not adjustable. Three companies submitted bids on the work, and these bids were distributed to vestry members prior to the meeting. Following a discussion, Bill Bestow moved that we go forward with the project using Hayes Mechanical to do the work. Gale Michael seconded the motion. The motion was approved with one abstention. Jim Whitfield moved that the project be paid for out of the reserve fund. Steve Hofer seconded, and the motion passed.

Closing
Following prayer, the meeting ended at 8:40 PM. The next meeting is scheduled for June 16th.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Marquis
Clerk of the Vestry

Looking Ahead: Fourth of July Ice Cream Social

Look for the red, white and blue donation envelopes around the church.

Parish Book Club
The first book that the Practicing Our Faith Book Club will be discussing in the fall is T.H. Luhrmann’s When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical Relationship with God. From the introduction: “So how, in the face of doubt and uncertainty, does God become real for someone? Particularly in our modern . . . American society, with all its exposure to scientific explanation, where the supernatural is often treated as entertaining fantasy, how does someone become confident that there is a supernatural God present in the everyday world? How does a living God become real to modern people?” We welcome you to join the discussion of this book on September 18th.

Reflection for June 15

No one longs for what he or she already has, and yet the accumulated insight of those wise about the spiritual life suggests that the reason so many of us cannot see the red X that marks the spot is because we are standing on it. The treasure we seek requires no lengthy expedition, no expensive equipment, no superior aptitude or special company. All we lack is the willingness to imagine that we already have everything we need. The only thing missing is our consent to be where we are (Barbara Brown Taylor in the Introduction to An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith).

Look for donation envelopes around the church.

Reflection for June 8

When the Day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability (Acts 2:1-4).

Confirmation, 2014

Reflection for June 1

Well, I believed that there was a God because I was told it by my grandmother and later by other adults. But when I found that I knew not only that there was God but that I was a child of God, when I understood that, when I comprehended that, more than that, when I internalized that, ingested that, I became courageous…. I dared to do anything that was a good thing…. When I was asked to do something good, I often say yes, I’ll try, yes, I’ll do my best. And part of that is believing, if God loves me, if God made everything from leaves to seals and oak trees, then what is it I can’t do? (Dr. Maya Angelou, from a 2013 interview, quoted at Episcopal Cafe).
