The (Theological) Meaning of Christmas

O God, who wonderfully created, and yet more wonderfully restored, the dignity of human nature: Grant that we may share the divine life of him who humbled himself to share our humanity, your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (The Collect for the Second Sunday after Christmas, The Book of Common Prayer, p. 214)

Salus Mundi

I saw a stable, low and very bare,
A little child in a manger.
The oxen knew Him, had Him in their care,
To men he was a stranger.
The safety of the world was lying there,
And the world’s danger.

--Mary Coleridge

An Advent Bidding

Dear People of God: In the season of Advent, it is our responsibility and joy to prepare ourselves to hear once more the message of the Angels, to go to Bethlehem and see the Son of God lying in a manger.

Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God’s loving purpose from the time of our rebellion against him until the glorious redemption brought to us by his holy Child Jesus, and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. –From an “Advent Festival of Lessons and Music” in the Book of Occasional Services.

Reflection for December 12

On the season of Advent...
It was not suddenly and unannounced that Jesus came into the world. He came into a world that had been prepared for him. The whole Old Testament is the story of a special preparation.... Only when all was ready, only in the fullness of his time, did Jesus come. –Phillips Brooks, The Consolations of God: Great Sermons of Phillips Brooks.

Why do you think people [in the church] feel threatened [when you combine comedy and ministry?]

Power and humor are not friends. Humor breaks us open, reveals and brings in new perspectives. If we laugh in holy realms, it suggests that there might be some wiggle room in the dogma.
--Susan Sparks, pastor and comedian, interviewed in the Christian Century

Reflections on Giving from the Vestry

Most of the time someone is telling us what we need to give them in exchange for goods or services or whatever. Our only choice is to pay what’s being asked if we want what’s being offered Once a year we have the opportunity to decide how much we’re going to give to St. John’s. Whether to give and how much is completely up to us. How do we make that decision? How do we place a value on what our parish provides for us? How does that compare to what we spend in other parts of our everyday life? —Jack Zielinski

The continuation of St. John’s as we know it depends on us. We need to pay it forward so we can continue the legacy that was given to us here at St. John’s. We owe it to those in the outside altar. –John Huntoon

Reflection for November 7

Reflections on Giving from the Vestry

As Christians we are called to be generous. Generous with our time, talent and treasure. At. St. John’s we have an opportunity to demonstrate that generosity by supporting the faith community. I am so grateful for all of the people here who contribute in countless ways. It is because of them that I found a home here. It is because of them that I want to be generous in my support of St. John’s. —Cyndie Knoll, Junior Warden

When we have our hearts set on something that we “just have to have” we usually seem to be able to scrimp and save and somehow find the resources. Why then do we hesitate in the sharing of our treasures (money and time) when it comes to our God’s service? As generous as we are, we still need to follow our hearts and give a little more of our time and money. –Bev Keene

Being a part of St. John’s allows me to be a part of a compassionate community committed to serving God’s world. Supporting the church allows me both to grow spiritually in that community and also to play a role in reaching out to fulfill others’ needs that, on my own, I might never have known existed. –R.J. VanSwol.

Reflections on Giving from the Vestry

Giving feeds the soul; it keeps our perspective heavenward. It is the perfect antidote to the consumerism and materialism that constantly threaten to distance us from God –Tracie Moxley

The people are The Church; I value being part of The Church, a worship community, the body of Christ, committed to a way of life that is open and receptive to being part of God’s redeeming work in the world. We gather regularly to listen to God’s word, share bread and wine, coffee and conversation. When we leave our sacred space, strengthened, we are better prepared to be God’s faithful servants in the world. I generously support the Church because I need to be part of this faith community; I need to participate in the regular worship services and learning opportunities so I may take the peace and love I experience in community out into the world to share with others. –Mary Jean Bond

Reflections on Giving from the Vestry

Stewardship time is a time for reflecting on the gifts that God has given me: my health, friends and family, and especially my church and church family. God has blessed me so much: how can I not give generously? –Donna Blackburn, Senior Warden

Your generosity today honors the legacy of those who gave before... sustains the ministries upon which so many now rely... and helps ensure that St. John’s will still be here to meet the spiritual needs of future generations. If our church means as much to you as it does to my family, then I pray that you will be able to give to that which already gives so much to all of us. –Rob McManamy

Reflection for October 17

Among my many rebellious behaviors is my refusal to ask God for stuff, especially before meals, especially out loud. Requests for divine intervention usually strike me as jejune and quixotic. Why should God grant one request when another supplicant is asking for the opposite? Why should one believer have the hubris to think her needs deserve special attention in the global schema? I do like the idea of prayer as a way to foreground one’s blessings. It unselfs the self, as the theologian Eugene Peterson would say. (Rhoda Janzen: Mennonite in a Little Black Dress (A Memoir of Going Home)).

Reflection for October 10

So everything points toward the Lord’s wanting us to make our own decisions and even our own mistakes, rather than ask him what to do. Learning from Solomon, we need to see that when we’re faced with tough decisions, what we need to pray for is not how to discern the Lord’s will for our lives, but how to discern good from bad. For we already know the Lord’s will for our lives: he wants us to learn how to discern good from bad... (“No Secret Plan: Why you don’t have to ‘find’ God’s will for your life,” by Phillip Cary, Christian Century, October 5, 2010).

Reflection for September 26

We too easily fall prey to a cynicism that assumes that all of our options are bad.... This is surely not true. Cynicism is a form of sloth by which we refuse the hard work necessary to make moral judgments.

Reflection for Septmber 12

I had finally begun to see that my faith was not about belief in something irrational or about a blind connection to something unreal or about “belief” at all. As I worked in the soup kitchen, tried to pray, planned liturgies, and dealt with my brother’s illness, what I came to understand was that my faith had to be grounded in experience, or in “impulses,” as Simone Weil put it, “of an essentially and manifestly different order.” Faith for me was about the accumulation of these experiences, not abstractions, not believing, as the White Queen said to Alice, “six impossible things before breakfast.” (Nora Gallagher, Practicing Resurrection)

Reflection for September 5

God says: I like little children because my image has not yet been dulled in them. They have not botched my likeness; they are new, pure, without a blot, without a smear. So, when I gently lean over them, I recognize myself in them. I like them because they are still growing, they are still improving. They are on the road, they are on their way But with grown-ups there is nothing to expect any more. They will no longer grow, no longer improve. They have come to a full stop.

It is disastrous—grown-ups thinking they have arrived.

Reflection for August 29

Prayers linger in choir stalls, soak into walls. Centuries of prayer can make you feel buoyant in medieval European cathedrals. Gratitude settles over you like a benediction within busy urban shrines. When you can’t pray, you can go to a place consecrated for prayers and let the residue of others’ prayers carry you effortlessly, wordlessly into a state of prayer (Suzanne Guthrie, “Prayer-haunted,” Christian Century, August 24, 2010).

Reflection for August 15

Belief in God

I haven't yet found the decisive new argument that will prove once and for all that there really is a God; but we do need to remember that the number of people who come into a living personal faith as a result of arguments is actually rather small. Many centuries ago, a great theologian and pastor, St. Ambrose, said that 'it did not suit God to save his people by arguments'....

[For a lot of folk belief in God] starts from a sense that we ‘believe in’, we trust some kinds of people. We have confidence in the way they live; the way they live is a way I want to live.... The world they inhabit is one I’d like to live in. Faith has a lot to do with the simple fact that there are trustworthy lives to be seen.

It puts quite a responsibility on believing people, of course (Rowan Williams, Tokens of Trust).

Reflection for July 25

Family Reunions: A Taste of the Sacred

The [family reunion] Picnic stirs many deep emotions in me. It is one of those rare places that holds in a small space the expanse of my life: my origins, my gathered experiences, the people who have known me and stood by me in all sorts and conditions of years including years I am proud of and some years I would not mind forgetting. It holds the memories of my grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins now gone. It reminds me of the place I have taken in the family, the place these elders once held. It reminds me no matter how far I have traveled, no matter how far I have wandered, no matter how much I have amassed or squandered, there is a place and a people present, waiting with a meal to share. All of the above makes for a sacred event.

We are in that period of the Liturgical Calendar called Ordinary Time, the Season after Pentecost; the season which tells us we are the body of Christ, we are the physical manifestation of God, the family of God. In this space we continue to recall our origins, our people (every human being), our stories, our losses and our joys. We recall what has been learned and what has been squandered. We recall times when we were a tight group and times some of us wandered away. We recall when our separation provided the space and hunger for the work of being reunited. There are all sorts and conditions in this body; there are all sorts and conditions of stories. (Todd Donatelli; www.episcopalcafe.com)

Reflection for July 18

An Opposable Mind
Roger Martin introduced to business world readers the idea of an "opposable mind." As a human thumb allows us to pick up stuff, so leaders must hold together the irreconcilable until some new possibility merges. Others have written about how much Martin's description sounds like the gospel. Christians have to affirm things in tandem that the world prefers to pull apart: evangelism and social justice, piety and prophesy, tradition and innovation, biblical fidelity and engagement with the newest, sharpest ideas. Heresies, Rowan Williams argues, are always simplifying movements. They lop off part of the truth and guard it at the expense of the whole. The Arians weren't wrong to say the Son is a creature. They just weren't right enough: he's also the eternal Son of God. If he weren't divine, then he couldn't save us creatures. (Jason Byassee: Opposability in Johnny Cash)

The Lord's Supper

To eat this particular meal together is to meet at the level of our most basic humanness, which involves our need not just for food but for each other. I need you to help fill my emptiness just as you need me to help fill yours. As for the emptiness that’s still left over, well we’re in it together, or it in us. Maybe it’s most of what makes us human and makes us brothers.

The next time you walk down the street, take a good look at every face you pass and in your mind say Christ died for thee. That girl. That slob. That phony. That crook. That saint. That damned fool. Christ died for thee. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee. (Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC, "Lord's Supper")

Reflection for June 27

Prayer Against Carefulness
O Lord, take from me a careful heart in all worldly things, and grant that neither poverty oppress me and drive me to despair or falsehood, neither wealth nor prosperity lift me up to forget Thee or myself; but that in prosperity I may be thankful, and in adversity patient and humble. Make me merry without lightness, sad without mistrust, sober without dullness, fearing Thee without desperation, trusting Thee without presumption. –Henry Bull (quoted in The Prayer Manual by Frederick B. MacNutt)

All of this happens immediately following the 10:00 a.m. Flossmoor Children’s Parade and runs through about 12:30 p.m. Your participation is what makes this event a success. Are you able to bring in some wildflowers or flowers from your garden? Can you put up flyers around town? Can you help move tables and tents outside? Can you meet and greet our guests? Can you scoop ice cream? How about (and this is for everyone) praying for glorious weather? Contact Gale Michael with questions and/or offers to help.

Reflection for June 20

My grandmothers were powerful women.... Neither ever suffered any problem she could not give a name to. There was no mention of silence in need of breaking. There was, to be sure, little silence at all. A division of labor, typical of their generation, did not require an abdication of power.... If their husbands had political and financial and large muscle advantage, the women had emotional and spiritual and demographic comeuppance. The realization that God could be female required the consideration that the Devil could be also. My grandmothers were inclined to leave well enough alone. For most women, of course, things were just not that well enough. (Thomas Lynch, The Undertaking.)

Reflection for June 13

In Light of the Gulf Oil Disaster: A Prayer
As the catastrophic oil accident in the Gulf continues, O God, for the wonders of technology, we give you thanks. For the limits of technology, we pray for awareness. For the arrogance of technology, when it harms your Creation, we pray for humility. For the victims of this technology, we pray for forgiveness. For the recklessness which prevents careful preparation for accident, we pray with repentance and for enlightenment. And for our capacity to learn from this huge mistake and to minister compassionately as a society to those harmed by it, we give you thanks. Amen. --The Rev. John Widdows, Episcopal Diocese of Maine.

Reflection for June 6

[Our] understanding of Christian vocation encourages us to hold our convictions with sufficient humility that we can affirm the image of God in the person who disagrees with us. We believe that the Body of Christ is only found when such diversity is welcomed with abundant and radical hospitality. –The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate, The Episcopal Church; A Pastoral letter to the Episcopal Church, Pentecost, 2010. The full text of the pastoral letter is posted here.

Reflection for May 30

I, personally, do not enjoy changing up the service just for the sake of novelty. I think that this betrays a very dangerous attempt at entertainment. I think that the onus of paying attention is not on the liturgist but rather on the disciples participating in the service. The service is simply a mirror upon which we can see reflected the Face of Christ. To put it more bluntly, if you find the service boring whose reflection are you seeing in the mirror? --Leo Campos, “How to stay awake in church,” The Episcopal Cafe.

  • More Mayfair Thanks... this time for our generous donors
In this space last week, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew thanked all those who physically made this month’s ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner a reality. This week, we thank those parishioners who helped ensure the event’s financial success by donating specialty cakes, artwork and myriad other items for our auction, which ultimately raised some $2,600 for distribution to our designated charities. Those members of St. John’s who this year shared their talents and fortune to stock our auction included Bill & Ann Moser, Larry Boltz, Cyndie Knoll, Donna Blackburn, John Huntoon, Jim Buckman, Deacon Mike Bond, Jack Voigt, Harold Keene, Margi Strombeck, Bob Stevens, Diane Mobley-Foster, Caroline Meliska, Bob Burgwald, Iris & Bill Bestow, Bob Dehn, Steve & Mary Hofer, Lynn Ruschhaupt, Harriet Clowes, Bill Sole & Bob d’Olivera, and the Berner family. Thank you all. Today, the Brotherhood and Mayfair’s direct beneficiaries—St. Mary’s Services and Episcopal Relief & Development—stand squarely in your debt. --Rob McManamy

Reflection for Pentecost, May 23

The desert monks recognized that the utter indifference an uncaring desert modeled for them could be an aid in the spiritual life. These men and women were countercultural renegades from the imperial culture of ancient Rome, having turned their backs on the values of a twisted society in which the highest worth was given to consumerism, militarism and the careful cultivation of one’s reputation. They went to the desert to learn not to care about what was unimportant, so as to begin to care about what really mattered. –Belden C. Lane, “Caring and not caring” in Christian Century, May 18, 2010.

  • Pentecost, May 23
Next Sunday, May 23, is Pentecost. There is a long-time, informal tradition for people to wear red to church on Pentecost. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red, signifying the “tongues, as of fire” that alighted upon the disciples. It is also a traditional date for baptisms and we will be baptizing two new Christians at the 10:00 a.m. service.

  • ‘Mayfair’ Magic Recaptured; Moms to Benefit
More than 80 parishioners and guests filled the undercroft and Guild Room last Saturday evening for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew’s annual ‘Spring Mayfair’ Charity Auction and Dinner, which ultimately raised more than $3,200. Falling on the eve of Mothers’ Day, this year’s event placed a special emphasis on mothers, targeting at least half of its proceeds to St. Mary’s Episcopal Adoption Services and Maternity Counseling, which provided the night’s guest speaker, Ms. Jan Lynch, a St. Mary’s board member and adoptive parent. The balance will go to Episcopal Relief & Development, which also helps moms and their families around the world. While individual ‘Mayfair’ donors will be thanked individually and formally in the days ahead, the Brotherhood does want to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who gave so generously of their time, not to mention energy and sweat, all of which proved necessary to pull off this rewarding event. Specifically, ‘Mayfair 2010’ is indebted to the brawn and legwork of Margi & Jack Strombeck; Sue & Bob Berner; Iris & Bill Bestow; Cynthia Turnquest; Mark Moxley; Anna Alsman; Ted Stone; Stewart Scott; Alex Fullam; Leighton Whittaker; and Dee, Elliot & Glynnis McManamy. The Brotherhood sincerely thanks you all! --Rob McManamy

Reflection for May 16

There is no such thing as “human community” without the earth and the soil, and the air and the water and all the living forms. Without these humans do not exist. There is, therefore, no separate human community. Humans are woven into this larger community. The larger community is the sacred community. –Thomas Berry, quoted by the Bishop’s Task Force on Sustainability

Amen. [Book of Common Prayer]

Reflection for May 2

What is also important for all people to realize is that what is literally true is insignificant. What is significant is what is eternally true, and it is eternally true of the Bible that its words come to us not as universal precepts for all time to which we must give assent, but as words directed to eternally human situations in which we must decide. –William Sloan Coffin [Credo]
